Adsorption of pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions using biochar derived from cotton gin waste and guayule bagasse

The Alto MoxotóTerrane of the Borborema Province presents a wide exposure of Paleoproterozoic crust,but unlike other continental blocks of South America,its orogenic history is strongly obliterated by late Neoproterozoic *** isotopic and geochemical studies were conducted in mafic-ultramafic(Fazenda carmo Suite)and granitic-gneissic rocks(Riacho do Navio Suite)within the *** former present zircon U-Pb crystallization ages at ca.2.13 Ga,whereas Sm-Nd data suggests a juvenile origin via melting of early Paleoproterozoic to Archean peridotitic *** data for these rocks are compatible with tholeiitic magmas with some degree of crustal contamination and trace element distribution points to a continental-arc related setting interpreted as remnants of the early stages of *** contrast,the Riacho do Navio Suite was emplaced at ca.2.08 Ga and has highly negativeεNd(t)values indicating crustal *** suite displays calc-alkali to alkali-calcic and ferroan geochemical signatures compatible with cordilleran *** addition,trace-element distribution as well as discriminant diagrams suggest that the precursor magmas were generated during the later stages of a continental arc or in a syn-collisional *** on our results,we suggest that the studied units might represent missing pieces of a Paleoproterozoic accretionary orogen that formed the crustal framework of the Alto MoxotóTerrane,and that this represents a block associated with assembly of the Nuna/columbia supercontinent,which is now largely hidden within the Neoproterozoic orogenic belts of West Gondwana.

Effects of a municipal effluent on the freshwater mussel Elliptio complanata following challenge with Vibrio anguillarum

The purpose of this study was to examine the cumulative effects of exposure to a pathogenic bacteria and municipal effluent in the freshwater mussel Elliptio complanata. Mussels were exposed to increasing concentrations of an ozone-treated effluent at 15°c for 7 days. A sub-group of mussels was inoculated with Vibrio anguillarum and exposed to the same conditions as *** the exposure period, mussels were collected to assess hemocyte count and viability,immunocompetence（phagocytosis and nitrite production）, oxidative stress/inflammation（cyclooxygenase and lipid peroxidation） and oxygen radical/xenobiotic scavenging activity（metallothioniens, glutathione S-transferase）. The results showed that mussels exposed to municipal effluent had increased hemocyte counts, phagocytosis, nitrites, lipid peroxidation and metallothioneins. In the inoculated mussels, the same responses were observed, in addition to cyclooxygenase and glutathione S-transferase activities. Multivariate analyses revealed that（1）the response pattern changed with effluent concentration, where increased responses observed at low effluent concentrations（〉10%, V/V） were attenuated at higher effluent concentrations,（2）the effluent produced more pronounced changes in lipid peroxidation, metallothionein and hemocyte viability, and（3） the simultaneous presence of V. anguillarum led to more important changes in hemocyte count and viability and nitrite levels. In conclusion, the presence of *** could alter the response of mussels to municipal effluent, which could lead to increased inflammation in mussels.

Plasma waves play an important role in many solid-state phenomena and *** also become significant in electronic device structures as the operation frequencies of these devices increase.A prominent example is field-effect transistors(FETs),that witness increased attention for application as rectifying detectors and mixers of electromagnetic waves at gigahertz and terahertz frequencies,where they exhibit very good sensitivity even high above the cut-off frequency defined by the carrier transit *** theory predicts that the coupling of radiation at THz frequencies into the channel of an antenna-coupled FET leads to the development of a gated plasma wave,collectively involving the charge carriers of both the two-dimensional electron gas and the gate *** this paper,we present the first direct visualization of these *** graphene FETs containing a buried gate electrode,we utilize near-field THz nanoscopy at room temperature to directly probe the envelope function of the electric field amplitude on the exposed graphene sheet and the neighboring antenna *** of the field distribution documents that wave injection is unidirectional from the source side since the oscillating electrical potentials on the gate and drain are equalized by capacitive *** plasma waves,excited at 2 THz,are overdamped,and their decay time lies in the range of 25-70 *** this short decay time,the decay length is rather long,i.e.,0.3-0.5μm,because of the rather large propagation speed of the plasma waves,which is found to lie in the range of 3.5-7×10^(6)m/s,in good agreement with *** propagation speed depends only weakly on the gate voltage swing and is consistent with the theoretically predicted 1/4 power law.

Global regulations and many regional and national controls restrict the use of substances that exhibit the potential for environmental persistence and long-range ***,many current-use pesticides(cUPs)continue to be newly discovered in remote regions,including the *** present review serves as an update,summarizing newly available information for cUPs in the Arctic environment and biota published from 2010 to *** 2010,at least seven new cUPs have been measured in Arctic media:2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid(McPA),metribuzin,pendimethalin,phosalone,quizalofop-ethyl,tefluthrin and *** the large number of pesticides in current use,the number measured in the Arctic is very limited,however,modelling studies have identified additional cUPs as potential Arctic contaminants that have yet to be investigated in the *** to their recent detection,reports of cUPs in the Arctic are limited,but *** have been reported in a wide range of abiotic Arctic matrices,including air,snow,ice,freshwater and seawater,indicating their capacity for long-range atmospheric transport,however,concentrations are generally low in comparison to legacy pesticides and other persistent organic pollutants(POPs).Recent food-web studies indicate cUPs can enter Arctic terrestrial and marine food chains,however,in contrast to POPs,the highest concentrations of many cUPs were found in lower trophic-level organisms,and the lowest concentrations detected in animals at the highest trophic levels(i.e,ringed seals,polar bear,caribou,and wolves)indicating significant trophic *** detection of cUPs in the remote Arctic ecosystem reinforces the need for continued monitoring of both known and potential Arctic pollutants to prevent impacts on human and environmental health as the global arsenal of pesticides used in agriculture continuously changes.
