Inverse single-site Fe_(1)(OH)_(x)/Pt(111)model catalyst for preferential oxidation of CO in H_(2)

Inverse oxide/metal model systems are frequently used to investigate catalytic structure-function relationships at an atomic *** means of a novel atomic layer deposition process,growth of single-site Fe_(1)O_(x) on a Pt(111)single crystal surface was achieved,as confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy(STM).The redox properties of the catalyst were characterized by synchrotron radiation based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(AP-XPS).After calcination treatment at 373 k in 1 mbar O_(2).the chemical state of the catalyst was determined as Fe^(3+).Reduction in 1 mbar H_(2) at 373 k demonstrates a facile reduction to Fe2+and complete hydroxylation at significantly lower temperatures than what has been reported for iron oxide *** reaction conditions relevant for preferential oxidation of CO in H_(2)(PROX),the catalyst exhibits a Fe3+state(ferric hydroxide)at 298 k while re-oxidation of iron oxide clusters does not occur under the same *** oxidation proceeds on the single-site Fei(OH)3 through a mechanism including the loss of hydroxyl groups in the temperature range of 373 to 473 k,but no reaction is observed on iron oxide *** results highlight the high flexibility of the single iron atom catalyst in switching oxidation states,not observed for iron oxide nanoparticles under similar reaction conditions,which may indicate a higher intrinsic activity of such single interfacial sites than the conventional metal-oxide *** summary,our findings of the redox properties on inverse single-site iron oxide model catalyst may provide new insights into applied Fe-Pt catalysis.

Intermediate filaments, in addition to microtubules and actin microfilaments, are one of the three major components of the cytoskeleton in eukaryotic cells. It was discovered during the recent decades that in most cells, intermediate filament proteins play key roles to reinforce cells subjected to large-deformation, and that they participate in signal transduction, and it was proposed that their nanome- chanical properties are critical to perform those functions. However, it is still poorly understood how the nanoscopic structure, as well as the combination of chemical composition, molecular structure and interfacial properties of these protein molecules contribute to the biomechanical properties of filaments and filament networks. Here we review recent progress in computational and theoretical studies of the intermediate filaments network at various levels in the protein＇s structure. A multiple scale method is discussed, used to couple molecular modeling with atomistic detail to larger-scale material properties of the networked material. It is shown that a finer-trains-coarser method- ology as discussed here provides a useful tool in understanding the biomechanical property and disease mechanism of intermediate filaments, coupling experiment and simulation. It further allows us to improve the understanding of associated disease mechanisms and lays the foundation for engineering the mechanical properties of biomaterials.

To eat or not to eat-relationship of lichen herbivory by snails with secondary compounds and field frequency of lichens

Aims The biochemical defense of lichens against herbivores and its rela-tionship to lichen frequency are poorly ***,we tested whether chemical compounds in lichens act as feeding defense or rather as stimulus for snail herbivory among lichens and whether experimental feeding by snails is related to lichen fre-quency in the *** In a no-choice feeding experiment,we fed 24 lichen species to snails of two taxa from the Clausilidae and Enidae families and compared untreated lichens and lichens with compounds removed by acetone ***,we related experimental lichen consump-tion with the frequency of lichen species among 158 forest plots in the field(schwäbische alb,germany),where we had also sampled snail and lichen *** findings In five lichen species,snails preferred treated samples over untreated controls,indicating chemical feeding defense,and vice versa in two species,indicating chemical feeding ***,com-pared with less frequent lichen species,snails consumed more of untreated and less of treated samples of more frequent lichen *** one outlier species resulted in the loss of a significant positive relationship when untreated samples were analyzed ***,the interaction between treatment and lichen frequency remained significant when excluding single species or including snail genus instead of taxa,indicating that our results were robust and that lumping the species to two taxa was *** results imply lichen-feeding snails to prefer frequent lichens and avoid less frequent ones because of secondary compound *** supports the idea that consumers adapt to the most abundant food source.

Luminosity determination for the dd→αk^+k^- experiment at ANkE/COSY

High resolution studies of ao/fo（980） decays into channels involving open strangeness are currently being performed at COSY-Julich. As a ＂filter＂ for isospin-zero intermediate states, i.e. to selectively produce the f0（980） resonance, the dd →αk^＋k^-reaction was measured with the magnetic ANkE spectrometer. In order to determine the luminosity of this experiment, the elastically and quasi-elastically scattered deuterons were recorded simultaneously with the αk^＋k^- events. Here we report about the luminosity determination via investigating the （quasi-） elastic deuterons at ANkE.

This paper addresses fully space-time adaptive magnetic field computations. We describe an adaptive Whitney finite element method for solving the magnetoquasistatic formulation of Maxwell＇s equations on unstructured 3D tetrahedral grids. Spatial mesh re- finement and coarsening are based on hierarchical error estimators especially designed for combining tetrahedral H（curl）-conforming edge elements in space with linearly implicit Rosenbrock methods in time. An embedding technique is applied to get efficiency in time through variable time steps. Finally, we present numerical results for the magnetic recording write head benchmark problem proposed by the Storage Research Consortium in Japan.

In biology,structural design and materials engineering is unified through formation of hierarchical features with atomic resolution,from nano to *** molecular building blocks are particularly prevalent in all structural protein materials:alpha helices(AHs),beta-sheets(BSs)and tropocollagen(TC).In this article we present a comparative study of these three key building blocks by focusing on their mechanical signatures,based on results from full-atomistic simulation *** fi nd that each of the basic structures is associated with a characteristic material behavior:AH protein domains provide resilience at large deformation through energy dissipation at low force levels,BS protein domains provide great strength under shear loading,and tropocollagen molecules provide large elasticity for deformation *** suggests that AHs,BSs,and TC molecules have mutually exclusive mechanical *** correlate each of these basic properties with the molecule’s structure and the associated fundamental rupture *** study may enable the use of abundant protein building blocks in nanoengineered materials,and may provide critical insight into basic biological mechanisms for bio-inspired *** transfer towards the design of novel nanostructures could lead to new multifunctional and mechanically active,tunable,and changeable materials.

Damage due to rolling in total knee replacement-The influence of tractive force
