Artificial intelligence-based predictive model of nanoscale friction using experimental data

A recent systematic experimental characterisation of technological thin films,based on elaborated design of experiments as well as probe calibration and correction procedures,allowed for the first time the determination of nanoscale friction under the concurrent influence of several process parameters,comprising normal forces,sliding velocities,and temperature,thus providing an indication of the intricate correlations induced by their interactions and mutual *** created the preconditions to undertake in this work an effort to model friction in the nanometric domain with the goal of overcoming the limitations of currently available models in ascertaining the effects of the physicochemical processes and phenomena involved in nanoscale *** to the stochastic nature of nanoscale friction and the relatively sparse available experimental data,meta-modelling tools fail,however,at predicting the factual *** on the acquired experimental data,data mining,incorporating various state-of-the-art machine learning(ML)numerical regression algorithms,is therefore *** results of the numerical analyses are assessed on an unseen test dataset via a comparative statistical *** is therefore shown that the black box ML methods provide effective predictions of the studied correlations with rather good accuracy levels,but the intrinsic nature of such algorithms prevents their usage in most practical *** programming-based artificial intelligence(Ai)methods are consequently finally *** the marked complexity of the analysed phenomena and the inherent dispersion of the measurements,the developed Ai-based symbolic regression models allow attaining an excellent predictive performance with the respective prediction accuracy,depending on the sample type,between 72%and 91%,allowing also to attain an extremely simple functional description of the multidimensional dependence of nanoscale friction on the studied variable process param

A structured transdisciplinary method for the experimental determination of friction in the nanometric domain is proposed in this *** dependence of nanoscale friction on multiple process parameters on these scales,which comprise normal forces,sliding velocities,and temperature,was studied via the lateral force microscopy *** procedure used to characterize the stiffness of the probes used,and especially the influence of adhesion on the obtained results,is thoroughly *** analyzed thin films were obtained by using either atomic layer or pulsed laser *** developed methodology,based on elaborated design of experiments algorithms,was successfully implemented to concurrently characterize the dependence of nanoscale friction in the multidimensional space defined by the considered process *** enables the establishment of a novel methodology that extends the current state-of-the-art of nanotribological studies,as it allows not only the gathering of experimental data,but also the ability to do so systematically and concurrently for several influencing variables at ***,in turn,creates the basis for determining generalizing correlations of the value of nanoscale friction in any multidimensional experimental *** developments create the preconditions to eventually extend the available macro-and mesoscale friction models to a true multiscale model that will considerably improve the design,modelling and production of MEMS devices,as well as all precision positioning systems aimed at micro-and nanometric accuracy and precision.

The spectrum of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) ranges from simple steatosis through steatohepatitis to advanced f ibrosis and *** the reason why only a minority of patients develop progressive forms of disease still remains largely unclear,recent research has identified genetic factors as a possible basis for this variation in disease *** of the studies have been focused on f inding associations between advanced disease forms and selected single nucleotide polymorphisms in genes encoding various proteins involved in disease *** there are many limitations regarding the study design and interpretation of published data,further carefully planned studies together with implementation of new genetic technologies will likely bring new insights into disease pathogenesis and potential benefits to the management of patients with NAFLD.

Overview and developments in noninvasive diagnosis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

High prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and very diverse outcomes that are related to disease form and severity at presentation have made the search for noninvasive diagnostic tools in NAFLD one of the areas with most intense development in hepatology *** methods have been investigated in the recent years,including imaging methods like ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging,different forms of liver stiffness measurement,various biomarkers of necroinflammatory processes (acute phase reactants,cytokines,markers of apoptosis),hyaluronic acid and other biomarkers of liver *** tests,scoring systems and diagnostic panels were also developed with the purposes of differentiating non-alcoholic steatohepatitis from simple steatosis or discriminating between various fibrosis *** all of the cases,performance of noninvasive methods was compared with liver biopsy,which is still considered to be a gold standard in diagnosis,but is by itself far from a perfect comparative *** present here the overview of the published data on various noninvasive diagnostic tools,some of which appear to be very promising,and we address as well some of still unresolved issues in this interesting field.

Cave animals are an excellent model system for studying adaptive *** present,however,little is known about the mechanisms that enable surface colonizers to survive in the challenging environment of *** possibility is that these species have the necessary genetic background to respond with plastic changes to the pressures of underground *** gain insight into this process,we conducted a comparative study with the fish species Telestes karsticus,which occurs in a hydrological system consisting of an interconnected stream and a *** showed that *** resided year-round and spawned in Sušik cave,making it the first known cavefish in the Dinaric *** and surface populations differed in morphological and physiological characteristics,as well as in patterns of gene expression without any evidence of genetic *** test whether observed trait differences were plastic or genetic,we placed adult fish from both populations under light/dark or constant dark *** laboratory conditions erased all morphometric differences between the two morphs,suggesting phenotypic plasticity is driving the divergence of shape and size in wild *** pigmentation and increased fat deposition exhibited by cave individuals were also observed in surface fish kept in the dark in the *** study also revealed that specialized cave traits were not solely attributed to developmental plasticity,but also arose from adult responses,including ***,we conclude that *** can adapt to cave conditions,with phenotypic plasticity playing an important role in the process of cave colonization.

Adipokines and proinflammatory cytokines, the key mediators in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition in which excess fat accumulates in the liver of a patient with no history of alcohol abuse or other causes for secondary hepatic steatosis. The pathogenesis of NAFLD and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) has not been fully elucidated. The “two-hit“ hypothesis is probably a too simplified model to elaborate complex pathogenetic events occurring in patients with NASH. it should be better regarded as a multiple step process, with accumulation of liver fat being the first step, followed by the development of necroinflammation and fibrosis. Adipose tissue, which has emerged as an endocrine organ with a key role in energy homeostasis, is responsive to both central and peripheral metabolic signals and is itself capable of secreting a number of proteins. These adipocyte-specific or enriched proteins, termed adipokines, have been shown to have a variety of local, peripheral, and central effects. in the current review, we explore the role of adipocytokines and proinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. We particularly focus on adiponectin, leptin and ghrelin, with a brief mention of resistin, visfatin and retinol-binding protein 4 among adipokines, and tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (iL)-6, iL-1, and briefly iL-18 among proinflammatory cytokines. We update their role in NAFLD, as elucidated in experimental models and clinical practice.

On tempered and square integrable representations of classical p-adic groups

This paper has two aims. The first is to give a description of irreducible tempered representations of classical p-adic groups which follows naturMly the classification of irreducible square integrable representations modulo cuspidal data obtained by Mceglin and the author of this article （2002）. The second aim of the paper is to give a description of an invariant （partially defined function） of irreducible square integrable representation of a classical p-adic group （defined by Mceglin using embeddings） in terms of subquotients of Jacquet modules. As an application, we describe behavior of partially defined function in one construction of square integrable representations of a bigger group from such representations of a smaller group （which is related to deformation of Jordan blocks of representations）.
