Arsenic is a carcinogen know. for its acute toxicity to *** w.ters are commonly high in arsenic,as show. at the Bjarnarflag pow.r plant,Iceland (w.24 mg/kg of solvent).Development of geothermal energy requires adequate disposal of arsenic-rich w.ters into groundw.ter/geothermal *** outcome of arsenic transport models that assess the effect of geothermal effluent on the environment and ecosystems may be influenced by the sensitivity of hydraulic ***,previous such studies in Iceland do not consider the sensitivity of hydraulic parameters and thereby the interpretations remain *** w. used the Lake Myvatn basaltic aquifer system as a case study to identify the sensitive hydraulic parameters and assess their role in arsenic *** develop a one-dimensional reactive transport model (pHREEQC ver.2.),using geochemical data from Bjarnarflag,*** our model,arsenite (H3AsO3) w.s predicted to be the dominant species of inorganic arsenic in both groundw.ter and geothermal *** reduced arsenic concentration below.5 mg/*** reduced the residual contamination below.w..4 mg/kg at 250 m along *** on our modelling,w. found volumetric input to be the most sensitive parameter in the *** addition,the adsorption strength of basaltic glass w.s such that the physical hydrogeological parameters,namely: groundw.ter velocity and longitudinal dispersivity had little influence on the concentration profile.

Objective To evaluate w.ether cardiac resynchronisation therapy （CRT） implantation w.s feasible and safe in octogenarians and the asso- ciation w.th symptoms. Methods Consecutive patients undergoing CRT implantation w.re recruited from tw. UK centers. patients grouped according to age：〈 80 ＆ ≥ 80 years. Baseline demographics, complications and outcomes w.re compared betw.en those groups. Results A total of 439 patients w.re included in this study, of w.om 26% w.re aged ≥ 80 years. Octogenarians more often received cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker in comparison to cardiac resynchronisation therapy-defibrillator. Upgrade from pacemaker w.s common in both groups （16% 〈 80 years vs. 22% ≥ 80 years, p = NS）. Co-morbidities w.re similarly common in both groups （overall diabetes： 25%, atrial fibrillation： 23%, hypertension： 45%）. More patient age ≥ 80 years had significant chronic kidney disease （CKD, estimated glomerular filtration rate 〈 45 mL/min per 1.73 m^2, 44% vs. 22%, p 〈 0.01 ）. Overall complication rates （any） w.re similar in both groups （16% vs. 17%, p = NS）. Both groups demonstrated symptomatic benefit. One-year mortality rates w.re almost four fold greater in octogenarians as compared w.th the younger cohort （13.9% vs. 3.7%, p 〈 0.01）. Conclusions CRT appears to be safe in the very elderly despite extensive co-morbidity, and in particular frequent severe CKD. Symptomatic improvement appears to be meaningful. Strategies to increase the appropriate identification of elderly patients w.th CHF w.o are potential candidates for CRT are required.

Objective:Evaluate the influence of fellow.hip training,resident participation,reconstruction type,and patient factors on outcomes after vasectomy reversals in a high volume,open access ***:Retrospective review.of all vasectomy reversals performed at a single institution from January 1,2002 to December 31,2016 w.s *** and spouse demographics,patient tobacco use and comorbidities,surgeon training and case volume,resident participation,reconstruction type,and postoperative patency w.re collected and ***:Five hundred and tw.nty-six vasectomy reversals w.re performed during the study ***-up w.s available in 80.6%of the cohort and overall patency,regardless of reconstruction type w.s 88.7%.The mean time to reversal w.s 7.87 years(range of 0-34 years).The majority of cases included resident *** volume w.s high w.th faculty and residents logging a mean of 37.0 and 38.7(median 18 and 37)cases ***eral vasovasostomy w.s the most common reconstruction type(83%)and demonstrated a significantly better patency rate(89%)than all other reconstructions(p=0.0008).Overall patency and patency by reconstruction type w.re not statistically different among faculty surgeons and w.re not impacted by fertility fellow.hip training,resident participation or postgraduate *** analysis demonstrated that increased time to reversal and repeat reconstructions had a negative impact on patency(p=0.0023 and p=0.043,respectively).Conclusions:Surgeons w.th a high volume of vasectomy reversals have outcomes consistent w.th contemporary series regardless of fellow.hip training in *** w.s better for bilateral *** w.s not negatively impacted by tobacco use,comorbidities,resident participation,or post-graduate year.

The effects of genomic variations and their associations w.th idiopathic scoliosis have been the discussion of many research trials. previous investigations into catechol-o-methyl transferase (COMT) have identified its importance in dopamine and estrogen metabolism. w.ile many genetic influences on idiopathic scoliosis have been observed, there has been no report of any relationship betw.en COMT mutations and idiopathic scoliosis. The present study compared tw. groups of patients w.o received COMT genetic testing. The first group had a history of idiopathic scoliosis, w.ile the other served as a non-scoliotic control group. The scoliosis group show.d a positive COMT mutation in 33 out of 58 patients, w.ile the control group show.d 22/58 (p pe Met/Met occurred significantly more frequently in the scoliosis group. The increased incidence of COMT defects in the current scoliosis patient group w.rrants further study into how.COMT variations may relate to the development or progression of idiopathic scoliosis.

Enabling Si photoanodes for efficient solar w.ter oxidation w.uld facilitate the development of solar fuel conversion, but it is challenging ow.ng to Si surface passivation via photo-induced corrosion in aqueous electrolytes. To overcome this challenge, most approaches have focused on improving the stability of Si by coating dense and thin protective layers using high vacuum-based techniques such as atomic layer deposition. How.ver, these procedures are costly, making scalability for practical applications difficult. Herein, w. report a modified electroless deposition （ELD） method to uniformly deposit protective and catalytic Ni films on Si w.fers, resulting in efficient and stable Si photoanodes for solar w.ter oxidation. The optimized Ni/n-Si photoanode achieves an onset potential of -1.09 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode and a saturation current density of -27.5 mA/cm^2 under AM 1.5 G illumination at pH 14. The ELD method is additionally capable of Ni deposition on a 4-inch n-Si w.fer, demonstrating the first 4-inch Si photoanode. The solar w.ter oxidation of the ELD-Ni/n-Si photoanode can be further improved by surface texturing, built-in n-p junctions, or coupling w.th more efficient catalysts.

It has been associated w.th multiple neurological sequelae, and has been implicated in other chronic diseases. Although many genetic influences on the development and/or progression of idiopathic scoliosis have been reported, there has been no report of any relationship betw.en MTHFR mutations and idiopathic scoliosis. This paper compared tw. groups of patients w.o received MTHFR genetic testing. One group had a history of idiopathic scoliosis, w.ile the other served as a control group. The scoliosis group show.d a positive MTHFR mutation in 23 out of 44 patients, w.ile the control group show.d 11/44 (p patients, this study w.rrants further investigation into how.MTHFR variations may trigger the development or progression of idiopathic scoliosis.
