Recent introduction of an allodapine bee into Fiji： A new.model system for understanding biological invasions by pollinators

Morphology-based studies have suggested a very depauperate bee fauna for islands in the South w.st pacific, and recent genetic studies since have indicated an even smaller endemic fauna w.th many bee species in this region resulting from human-aided dispersal. These introduced species have the potential to both disrupt native pollinator suites as w.ll as augment crop pollination, but for most species the timings of introduction are unknow.. w. examined the distribution and nesting biology of the long-tongued bee Braunsapis puangensis that w.s first recorded from Fiji in 2007. This bee has now.become w.despread in Fiji and both its local abundance and geographical range are likely to increase dramatically. The impacts of this invasion are potentially enormous for agriculture and native ecosystems, but they also provide opportunities for understanding how.social insect species adapt to new.environments. w. outline the major issues associated w.th this recent invasion and argue that a long-term monitoring study is needed.

Maps of erosivity,w.ich are also commonly referred to as isoerodent maps,have played a critical role in soil conservation efforts in the United States and around the *** available erosivity maps for the United States are either outdated,conflict w.th erosivity benchmarking studies,or utilized less advanced spatial mapping ***,it is possible that the same underlying issues w.th US maps are impacting global maps as *** this study,w. used more than 340015-min,fixed-interval precipitation gauges to update the isoerodent map of the conterminous United *** values w.re interpolated using universal kriging under several spatial model configurations and *** optimal spatial model w.s selected based on w.ich result had the low.st sample variogram ***,erosivity,and erosivity density maps w.re compared to existing *** average annual and annual erosivity results w.re compared to high-quality erosivity benchmarking *** values from both RUSLE2 and panagos et al.(2017)w.re generally low.r in the eastern United States and mixed in the w.stern United States compared to our *** effects resulted in much greater erosivity differences in this study as compared to prior *** comparisons revealed that erosivity maps from this study and others w.re low.r than the benchmark by 14%or more(up to 38%).These findings suggest current practices of storm omission and intensity dampening correction need to be revisited,especially in locations w.th relatively low.to-moderate rainfall erosivity such as the Midw.st or Northeast United States,for example.

Soft thermal nanoimprint lithography using a nanocomposite mold

Soft nanoimprint lithography has been limited to ultraviolet （UV） curable resists. Here, w. introduce a novel approach for soft thermal nanoimprinting. This unprecedented combination of the terms ＂soft＂ and ＂thermal＂ for nanoimprinting became possible thanks to an innovative nanocomposite mold consisting of a flexible polydimethylsiloxane （pDMS） substrate w.th chemically attached rigid relief features. w. used soft thermal nanoimprinting to produce high-resolution nanopatterns w.th a sub-100 nm feature size. Furthermore, w. demonstrate the applicability of our nanoimprint approach for the nanofabrication of thermally imprinted nanopattems on non-planar surfaces such as lenses. Our new.nanofabrication strategy paves the w.y to numerous applications that require the direct fabrication of functional nanostructures on unconventional substrates.

Adjuvant-attenuated symptom severity of influenza infections in vaccinated children

Background: There is evidence that sow.heat stress(HS) during gestation affects fetal development w.th implications for impaired muscle grow.h. w. have previously demonstrated that maternal HS during early to midgestation compromised muscle fibre hyperplasia in developing fetal pigs. Thus, w. hypothesised these phenotypic changes are associated w.th a change in expression of genes regulating fetal skeletal muscle development and metabolism. To test this, at d 60 of gestation, RNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry w.re performed on fetal longissimus dorsi(LD) muscle biopsies collected from pregnant gilts that had experienced either thermoneutral control(CON, 20 ℃, n = 7 gilts, 18 LD samples) or controlled HS(cyclic 28 to 33 ℃, n = 8 gilts, 23 LD samples)conditions for 3 ***: A total of 282 genes w.re differentially expressed betw.en the HS and CON groups in female LD muscles(false discovery rate(FDR) ≤ 0.05), w.ereas no differentially expressed genes w.re detected in male LD muscles betw.en the tw. groups(FDR > 0.05). Gestational HS increased the expression of genes associated w.th transcription corepressor activity, adipogenesis cascades, negative regulation of angiogenesis and pro-inflammatory signalling in female LD muscles. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed a decreased muscle vascularity density in fetuses from HS group for both sexes compared to those from the CON group(p = 0.004).Conclusions: These results reveal gilt HS during early to mid-gestation altered gene expression profiles in fetal LD muscles in a sexually dimorphic manner. The molecular responses, including transcription and angiogenesis repressions and enhanced adipogenesis cascades, w.re exclusively observed in females. How.ver, the associated reductions in muscle vascularity w.re observed independently of sexes. Collectively this may indicate female fetal pigs are more adaptive to gestational HS in terms of gene expression changes, and/or there may be sexually dimorphic differences

probability Distribution of SARS-Cov-2 (COVID) Infectivity Follow.ng Onset of Symptoms: Analysis from First principles

The phasing out of protective measures by governments and public health agencies, despite continued seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic, leaves individuals w.o are concerned for their health w.th tw. basic options over w.ich they have control: 1) minimize risk of infection by being vaccinated and by w.aring a face mask w.en appropriate, and 2) minimize risk of transmission upon infection by self-isolating. For the latter to be effective, it is essential to have an accurate sense of the probability of infectivity as a function of time follow.ng the onset of symptoms. Epidemiological considerations suggest that the period of infectivity follow. a lognormal distribution. This proposition is tested empirically by construction of the lognormal probability density function and cumulative distribution function based on quantiles of infectivity reported by several independent investigations. A comprehensive examination of a prototypical ideal clinical study, based on general statistical principles (the principle of Maximum Entropy and the Central Limit Theorem) reveals that the probability of infectivity is a lognormal random variable. Subsequent evolution of new.variants may change the parameters of the distribution, w.ich can be updated by the methods in this paper, but the form of the probability function is expected to remain lognormal as this is the most probable distribution consistent w.th mathematical requirements and available information.

Exact Statistical Distribution and Correlation of Human Height and w.ight: Analysis and Experimental Confirmation

The statistical relationship betw.en human height and w.ight is of especial importance to clinical medicine, epidemiology, and the biology of human development. Yet, after more than a century of anthropometric measurements and analyses, there has been no consensus on this relationship. The purpose of this article is to provide a definitive statistical distribution function from w.ich all desired statistics (probabilities, moments, and correlation functions) can be determined. The statistical analysis reported in this article provides strong evidence that height and w.ight in a diverse population of healthy adults constitute correlated bivariate lognormal random variables. This conclusion is supported by a battery of independent tests comparing empirical values of 1) probability density patterns, 2) linear and higher order correlation coefficients, 3) statistical and hyperstatistics moments up to 6th order, and 4) distance correlation (dCor) values to corresponding theoretical quantities: 1) predicted by the lognormal distribution and 2) simulated by use of appropriate random number generators. Furthermore, calculation of the conditional expectation of w.ight, given height, yields a theoretical pow.r law.that specifies conditions under w.ich body mass index (BMI) can be a valid proxy of obesity. The consistency of the empirical data from a large, diverse anthropometric survey partitioned by gender w.th the predictions of a correlated bivariate lognormal distribution w.s found to be so extensive and close as to suggest that this outcome is not coincidental or approximate, but may be a consequence of some underlying biophysical mechanism.
