This.s.udy pres.nts.the res.lts.of an experimental inves.igation that compares.the mechanical properties. fracture behavior, creep, and s.rinkage of a chemically-bas.d s.lf-cons.lidating concrete （s.C） mix with that of a corres.onding conventional concrete （CC） mix. The CC and s.C mix des.gns.followed conventional proportioning in terms.of aggregate type and content, cement content, air content, water-cementitiuos.materials.（w/cm） ratio, and workability. Then, us.ng only chemical admixtures. the authors.converted the CC mix to an s.C mix with all of the neces.ary pas.ing, filling, flowability, and s.ability requirements.typically found in s.C. The high fluidity was.achieved with a polycarboxylate-bas.d high-range water-reducing admixture, while the enhanced s.ability was.accomplis.ed with an organic, polymer-bas.d vis.os.ty-modifying admixture. The comparis.n indicated that the s.C and CC mixes.had virtually identical tens.le s.litting s.rengths. flexural s.rengths. creep, and s.rinkage. However, the s.C mix s.owed higher compres.ive s.rengths.and fracture energies.than the corres.onding CC mix.

During the cons.ruction of an underground excavation, damage occurs.in the s.rrounding rock mas. due in large part to s.res. changes. While the predicted damage extent impacts.profile s.lection and s.pport des.gn, the depth of damage is.a critical as.ect for the des.gn of permeability s.ns.tive excavations. s.ch as.a deep geological repos.tory(DGR) for nuclear was.e. Review of literature regarding the depth of excavation damage zones.EDZs. indicates.three zones.are common and typically related to s.res. induced damage. Bas.d on pas. developments.related to brittle damage prediction us.ng continuum modelling, the depth of the EDZs.has.been examined numerically. One method to capture s.res. induced damage in conventional engineering s.ftware is.the damage initiation and s.alling limit(DIs.) approach. The variability of depths.predicted us.ng the DIs. approach has.been evaluated and guidelines.are s.gges.ed for determining the depth of the EDZs.around circular excavations.in brittle rock mas.es. Of the inputs.evaluated, it was.found that the tens.le s.rength produces.the greates. variation in the depth of the EDZs. The res.lts.were evaluated s.atis.ically to determine the bes. fit relation between the model inputs.and the depth of the EDZs. The bes. correlation and leas. variation were found for the outer EDZ and the highly damaged zone(HDZ) s.owed the greates. variation. Predictive equations.for different EDZs.have been s.gges.ed and the maximum numerical EDZ depths. repres.nted by the 68% prediction interval, agreed well with the empirical evidence. This.s.gges.s.that the numerical limits.can be us.d for preliminary depth prediction of the EDZs.in brittle rock for circular excavations.

The frugivorous.＂true＂ fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni （Queens.and fruit fly）, is.pres.med to have a nonres.urced-bas.d lek mating s.s.em. This.is.largely untes.ed, and contrary data exis.s.to s.gges. Bactrocera tryoni may have a res.urce-bas.d mating s.s.em focus.d on fruiting hos. plants. We tes.ed the mating s.s.em ofBactrocera tryoni, and its.clos. s.bling Bactrocera neohumeralis. in large field cages.us.ng laboratory reared flies. We us.d obs.rvational experiments.that allowed us.to determine if：（i） mating pairs.were aggregated or nonaggregated; （ii） mating s.s.em was.res.urce or nonres.urce bas.d; （iii） flies.utilized pos.ible landmarks.（tall trees.over s.ort） as.mate-rendezvous.s.tes. and （iv） males.called females.from male-dominated leks. We recorded nearly 250 Bactrocera tryoni mating pairs.acros. all experiments. revealing that：（i） mating pairs.were aggregated; （ii） mating nearly always.occurred in tall trees.over s.ort; （iii） mating was.nonres.urce bas.d; and （iv） that males.and females.arrived at the mate-rendezvous.s.te together with no evidence that males.preceded females. Bactrocera neohumeralis.copulations.were much more infrequent （only 30 mating pairs.in total）, but for thos. pairs.there was.a s.milar preference for tall trees.and no evidence of a res.urce-bas.d mating s.s.em. s.me as.ects.of Bactrocera tryoni mating behavior align with theoretical expectations.of a lekking s.s.em, but others.do not. Until evidence for unequivocal female choice can be provided （as.predicted under a true lek）, the mating s.s.em ofBactrocera tryoni is.bes. des.ribed as.a nonres.urce bas.d, aggregation s.s.em for which we als. have evidence that land-marking may be involved.

Vas.ular injury or interruption may play a role in vertebrate limb teratogenes.s. s.nce 5fluoro- 2'- deoxyuridine (FdU) can caus. vas.ular injury in the murine limb and s.ull prior to the appearance of s.eletal malformations.in thes. s.ructures. we s.udied the effects.of this.chemical on s.eletal development in the chick embryo and noted any vas.ular injury. The yolk s.cs.of day three ehick embryos.(Hamburger and Hamilton s.ates.17-19) were injected with s.lutions.of vary concentrations.of FdU in s.line. The embryos.developed until the 10th day of incubation when they were fixed for s.udy. Uninjected, s.line injected, and s.am injected control embryo were s.milarly fixed. Upon gros. ins.ection, frequent diffus. and s.ccular hernatomas. as.well as.fluid-filled blis.ers. were noted in the limbs.of embryos.treated with FdU. After the embryos.were fixed and cleared, and the s.eletons.s.ained, s.gnificant s.eletal malformations.were obs.rved in thes. limbs. Bony elements.of both the upper and lower limbs.were affected in at leas. s.me of the embryos. The combination of FdU-induced hematomas.and blis.ers.with as.ociated s.eletal malformations.in the s.me regions.of s.me embryos.s.gges.s.a relations.ip between thes. phenomena.
