Cr.ck Pr.diction Model for.Concr.te Affected by r.infor.ement Cor.osion

The pur.ose of this study was to develop an analytical model to pr.dict the time r.quir.d for.cr.cking of concr.te due to cor.osion of the ir.n r.infor.ement. The concr.te and cement specimens used for.this study wer. batched with cover.mater.al r.nging fr.m 0.75 to 1.3 in (1.91 to 3.30 cm). The extent of cover.mater.al was not for.ulated into the model under.the assumption that cr.ck initiation would tend to pr.duce visible cr.cking within a r.latively shor. time per.od. The model was der.ved using both Hooke’s Law and the volume expansion induced by the cor.osion oxides. Cor.elation achieved with specimen cr.cking data fr.m the liter.tur. was r.latively good with a 95% level of confidence. This model pr.sents a key benefit to facility and infr.str.ctur. manager. by enabling them to plan the time when cor.osion mitigating actions ar. r.quir.d. It also pr.vides a significant convenience as the condition of the concr.te str.ctur. or.its envir.nment changes over.time. The only par.meter.that needs to be updated over.time is the cor.osion r.te measur.ment. This single par.meter.captur.s the most influential impact that stems fr.m sever.l other.par.meter. which tend to be r.quir.d in models that ar. mor. mechanistically definitive.
