Proper cell-cell and cell-matrix contacts mediated by integrin adhesion receptors are important for development, immune response, hemostasis and wound healing. Integrins pass trans-membrane signals bidirectionally through their regulated affinities for extracellular ligands and intracellular signaling molecules. Such bidirectional signaling by integrins is enabled by the conformational changes that are often linked among extracellular, transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. Here, we review how talin-integrin and kindlin-integrin interactions, in cooperation with talin-lipid and kindlin-lipid interactions, regulate integrin affinities and how the progress in these areas helps us understand integrin-related diseases.

One-hundred years have passed since the original description of the commonly described phenomenon of persistent abdominal symptoms being triggered by an acute enteric infection. This first account was generated out of astute observations by Sir Arthur Hurst in World War I. Additional descriptions followed from military and non-military practitioners adding the evidence which has transitioned this recognized condition from association to causation. While mechanistic understanding is an area of active pursuit, this historical accounting of a centuries progress highlights important advances and contributions of military medicine and scientists to advances benefiting global populations.

Dear Editor,We present a case of a healthy 32-year-old man who developed bilateral corneal ulceration 3 wk after commencing dupilumab for atopic dermatitis. Dupilumab is a recently introduced systemic monoclonal antibody used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, showing efficacy in clinical trials;. Several publications have reported ocular surface complications associated with dupilumab.

AIM To investigate gender-specific liver estrogen receptor(ER) expression in normal subjects and patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS Liver tissues from normal donors and patients diagnosed with HCV-related cirrhosis and HCV-related HCC were obtained from the NIH Liver Tissue and Cell Distribution System. The expression of ER subtypes, ERα and ERβ, were evaluated by Western blotting and real-time RT-PCR. The subcellular distribution of ERα and ERβ was further determined in nuclear and cytoplasmic tissue lysates along with the expression ofinflammatory [activated NF-κB and IκB-kinase(Ikk)] and oncogenic(cyclin D1) markers by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. The expression of ERα and ERβ was correlated with the expression of activated NF-κB, activated Ikk and cyclin D1 by Spearman's correlation. RESULTS Both ER subtypes were expressed in normal livers but male livers showed significantly higher expression of ERα than females(P kk in HCV-related HCC livers. Autism spectrum disorder(ASD)is a neurological disorder in which a significant number of children experience a developmental regression characterized by a loss of previously-acquired skills and *** of neurological function in ASD,as observed in affected children who have regressed,can be explained as *** there is research evidence of neurodegeneration or progressive encephalopathy in ASD,the issue of neurodegeneration in ASD is still under *** of neurodegeneration in the brain in ASD includes:(1)neuronal cell loss,(2)activated microglia and astrocytes,(3)proinflammatory cytokines,(4)oxidative stress,and(5)elevated 8-oxo-guanosine *** evidence from this review suggests that neurodegeneration underlies the loss of neurological function in children with ASD who have experienced regression and loss of previously acquired skills and abilities,and that research into treatments to address the issue of neurodegeneration in ASD are warranted.
