Evaluation of seismic potential in a longwall mine with.massive sandstone roof under deep overburden

A recent seismic event was recorded by a deep longwall mine in Virginia at 3.7 ML on th. local magnitude scale and 3.4 MMS by th. United States Geological Survey(USGS) in *** investigations by th. National Institute for Occupational Safety and h.alth.NIOSh. and Coronado Coal research.rs h.ve sh.wn th.t th.s event was associated with.geological features th.t h.ve also been associated with.oth.r, similar seismic events in *** mapping and geological exploration in th. mining area h.s made it possible to forecast possible locations for future seismic *** order to use th. geology as a forecaster of mining-induced seismic events and th.ir energy potential, two primary components are *** first component is a long h.story of recorded seismic events with.accurately plotted *** second component is a h.gh.density of geologic data with.n th. mining *** th.s case, 181 events of 1.0 MLor greater were recorded by th. mine's seismic network between January, 2009, and October, *** th. mining area, 897 geoph.sical logs, 224 core h.les, and 1031 fiberscope h.les were examined by mine *** th.s information, it was found th.t overburden th.ckness, sandstone th.ckness, and sandstone quality contributed greatly to seismic *** th. data was analyzed, a pattern became apparent indicating th.t th. majority of seismic events occurred under specific *** forecast maps were created based on geology of previous seismic *** forecast maps h.ve sh.wn an accuracy of with.n 74%–89% wh.n compared to th. recorded 181 events th.t were1.0 MLor greater wh.n considering th.ee major geological criteria of overburden th.ckness of 579.12 m or greater, 6.096–12.192 m of sandstone with.n 15.24 m of th. Pocah.ntas number 3 seam, and a longwall caving h.igh. of 4.572 m or less.

Effect of longwall-induced subsurface deformations on sh.le gas well casing stability under deep covers

Th.s paper presents th. results of a 2017 study conducted by th. National Institute for Occupational Safety and h.alth.NIOSh., Pittsburgh.Mining Research.Division(PMRD), to evaluate th. effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations with.n a longwall abutment pillar under deep cover. Th. 2017 study was conducted in a south.estern Pennsylvania coal mine, wh.ch.extracts 457 m-wide longwall panels under 361 m of cover. One 198 m-deep, in-place inclinometer monitoring well was drilled and installed over a 45 m by 84 m center abutment pillar. In addition to th. monitoring well, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as th. 457 m-wide longwall panel on th. south.side of th. abutment pillar was being mined. Prior to th. first longwall excavation, a number of simulations using FLAC3D^(TM) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, increases in underground coal pillar pressure, and subsurface h.rizontal displacements in th. monitoring well. Comparisons of th. pre-mining FLAC3D simulation results and th. surface, subsurface,and underground instrumentation results sh.w th.t th. measured in-place inclinometer casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with.th.se predicted by th. 3D finite difference models. Th. measured surface subsidence and pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with.th.se predicted by th. 3D *** from th.s 2017 research.clearly indicate th.t, under deep cover, th. measured h.rizontal displacements with.n th. abutment pillar are approximately one order of magnitude smaller th.n th.se measured in a 2014 study under medium cover.

Th. mating system of th. true fruit fly Bactrocera tryoni and its sister species, Bactrocera neoh.meralis

Th. frugivorous ＂true＂ fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni （Queensland fruit fly）, is presumed to h.ve a nonresourced-based lek mating system. Th.s is largely untested, and contrary data exists to suggest Bactrocera tryoni may h.ve a resource-based mating system focused on fruiting h.st plants. We tested th. mating system ofBactrocera tryoni, and its close sibling Bactrocera neoh.meralis, in large field cages using laboratory reared flies. We used observational experiments th.t allowed us to determine if：（i） mating pairs were aggregated or nonaggregated; （ii） mating system was resource or nonresource based; （iii） flies utilized possible landmarks （tall trees over sh.rt） as mate-rendezvous sites; and （iv） males called females from male-dominated leks. We recorded nearly 250 Bactrocera tryoni mating pairs across all experiments, revealing th.t：（i） mating pairs were aggregated; （ii） mating nearly always occurred in tall trees over sh.rt; （iii） mating was nonresource based; and （iv） th.t males and females arrived at th. mate-rendezvous site togeth.r with.no evidence th.t males preceded females. Bactrocera neoh.meralis copulations were much.more infrequent （only 30 mating pairs in total）, but for th.se pairs th.re was a similar preference for tall trees and no evidence of a resource-based mating system. Some aspects of Bactrocera tryoni mating beh.vior align with.th.oretical expectations of a lekking system, but oth.rs do not. Until evidence for unequivocal female ch.ice can be provided （as predicted under a true lek）, th. mating system ofBactrocera tryoni is best described as a nonresource based, aggregation system for wh.ch.we also h.ve evidence th.t land-marking may be involved.

Since 2014,"Bring Your Own Data"worksh.ps(BYODs)h.ve been organised to inform people about th. process and benefits of making resources Findable,Accessible,Interoperable,and Reusable(FAIR,and th. FAIRification process).Th. BYOD worksh.ps'content and format differ depending on th.ir goal,context,and th. background and needs of ***-focused BYODs educate domain experts on h.w to make th.ir data FAIR to find new answers to research.***-focused BYODs promote th. benefits of making data FAIR and instruct project managers and policy-makers on th. ch.racteristics of FAIRification ***-focused BYODs gath.r software developers and experts on FAIR to implement or improve software resources th.t are used to support ***,th.se BYODs intend to foster collaboration between different types of stakeh.lders involved in data management,curation,and reuse(*** experts,trainers,developers,data owners,data analysts,FAIR experts).Th. BYODs also serve as an opportunity to learn wh.t kind of support for FAIRification is needed from different communities and to develop teach.ng materials based on practical examples and *** th.s paper,we detail th. th.ee different structures of th.
