BACKGrOUND Timely differentiation of biliary atresia(BA)from oth.r infantile cholestatic diseases can impact patient ***,non-invasive staging of fibrosis after Kasai hepatoportoenterostomy has not been widely *** wave elastography is an ultrasound modality that detects changes in tissue *** auth.rs propose that the utility of elastography in BA can be elucidated through meta-analysis of existing *** To assess the utility of elastography in:(1)BA diagnosis,and(2)post-Kasai fibrosis *** A literature search identified articles that evaluated elastography for BA diagnosis and for post-Kasai *** studies met criteria for meta-analysis:Eleven for diagnosis and nine for follow-up *** diagnostic odds ratio(DOr),sensitivity,and specificity of elastography were calculated through a random-effects model using Meta-DiSc *** Mean liver stiffness in BA infants at diagnosis was significantly high.r than in non-BA,with overall DOr 24.61,sensitivity 83%,and specificity 79%.Post-Kasai,mean liver stiffness was significantly high.r in BA patients with varices than in patients without,with DOr 16.36,sensitivity 85%,and specificity 76%.Elastography differentiated stage F4 fibrosis from F0-F3 with DOr of 70.03,sensitivity 96%,and specificity 89%.Elastography also differentiated F3-F4 fibrosis from F0-F2 with DOr of 24.68,sensitivity 85%,and specificity 81%.CONCLUSION Elastography has potential as a non-invasive modality for BA diagnosis and surveillance *** paper’s limitations include inter-study method heterogeneity and small sample ***,standardized,multi-center studies are recommended.

Conversion of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene over Ag-ZrO_(2)/SiO_(2) catalysts:The role of surface interfaces

A series of Ag-ZrO_(2)/SiO_(2) catalysts with different metal-support interfaces were synthesized in an effort to elucidate the roles of specific interfaces in controlling the ethanol to 1,3-butadiene conversion and *** to the results of detailed ch.racterizations(***/pyridine-DrIFTS,XPS,TEM,Nh3-TPD,and ^(1)h MAS NMr),it was found that the Ag-O-Si interfaces significantly enhanced the dehydrogenation of ethanol while the presence of ZrO_(2) improved the interaction between Ag and ZrO_(2)/SiO_(2),creating more Ag^(δ+)active *** high dispersion of ZrO_(2) on SiO_(2) generated abundant Zr-O-Si interfaces with medium and weak Lewis acidity,promoting the condensation of acetaldehyde to *** Zr-O-Si interfaces in close interaction with Ag^(δ+)species played a critical role in the enhanced h transfer during the MPV reduction of crotonaldehyde to crotyl *** synergies among the interfaces resulted in retarded ethanol dehydration reactivity,balanced ethanol dehydrogenation and condensation reactions,and a subsequent high 1,3-butadiene yield.

reaction kinetic model for a recent co-produced water treatment technology

With the increasing demand for fossil based energy and implementation of progressively strict environmental pollution control standards, treatment of a large amount of co-produced waters （CPWs） from fossil based energy production has become increasingly important. removal of bicarbonate with h2SO4 has been recently studied as a simple and cost-effective method to decrease the alkalinity of CPWs. The present work investigates the kinetics of the reaction between h2SO4 and NahCO3, which could provide the base for scaling-up the CPW treatment technology. Based on the measured quantity change of the CO2 gas generated from the reaction between h2SO4 and NahCO3 with time under specified initial reaction conditions, the reaction orders with.respect to h2SO4 and NahCO3 were determined. Experiments were also conducted within the temperature of 15-30℃ to find various global rate coefficients of the reaction to calculate the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor of the empirical Arrhenius form of the bicarbonate removal reaction, which are 197.7 kJ/mol and 3.13 × 1034 （mol-3.7 ×L3.7 ×sec^-1 ）, respectively.

ract>Prepubertal boys treated for cancer may exhibit impaired fertility in later life. A number of chemoth.rapeu tic agents have been identified as being gonadotoxic, and certain treatment regimens, such as that used for hodgkin's disease, are particularly associated with subsequent infertility. radioth.rapy may also cause gonadal damage, most notably following direct testicular irradiation or total body irradiation. Because of the varied nature of the cytotoxic insult, it can be difficult to predict the likelihood of infertility in later life. Currently it is not possible to detect gonadal damage early due to the lack of a sensitive marker of gonadal function in the prepubertal age *** cryopreservation is currently the only method of preserving fertility in patients receiving gonadotoxic th.rapy. This is only applicable to postpubertal patients and can be problematic in the adolescent age group. At present th.re is no provision for the prepubertal boy, although th.re are a number of experimental methods currently being investigated. By h.rvesting testicular tissue prior to gonadotoxic th.rapy, restoration of fertility could be achieved following treatment, eith.r by germ cell transplantation or by in vitro maturation of the germ cells h.rvested. Alternatively, rendering the testes quiescent during cytotoxic treatment may protect the germ cells from subsequent damage. In addition to the many scientific and technical issues to be overcome prior to clinical application of these techniques, a number of ethical and legal issues must also be addressed to ensure a safe and realistic prospect for future fertility in these patients.

Background: Th.re is evidence that sow heat stress(hS) during gestation affects fetal development with implications for impaired muscle growth. We have previously demonstrated that maternal hS during early to midgestation compromised muscle fibre hyperplasia in developing fetal pigs. Thus, we hypothesised these phenotypic changes are associated with a change in expression of genes regulating fetal skeletal muscle development and metabolism. To test this, at d 60 of gestation, rNA sequencing and immunohistochemistry were performed on fetal longissimus dorsi(LD) muscle biopsies collected from pregnant gilts that had experienced eith.r th.rmoneutral control(CON, 20 ℃, n = 7 gilts, 18 LD samples) or controlled hS(cyclic 28 to 33 ℃, n = 8 gilts, 23 LD samples)conditions for 3 ***: A total of 282 genes were differentially expressed between the hS and CON groups in female LD muscles(false discovery rate(FDr) ≤ 0.05), wh.reas no differentially expressed genes were detected in male LD muscles between the two groups(FDr > 0.05). Gestational hS increased the expression of genes associated with transcription corepressor activity, adipogenesis cascades, negative regulation of angiogenesis and pro-inflammatory signalling in female LD muscles. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed a decreased muscle vascularity density in fetuses from hS group for both sexes compared to those from the CON group(P = 0.004).Conclusions: These results reveal gilt hS during early to mid-gestation altered gene expression profiles in fetal LD muscles in a sexually dimorphic manner. The molecular responses, including transcription and angiogenesis repressions and enhanced adipogenesis cascades, were exclusively observed in females. however, the associated reductions in muscle vascularity were observed independently of sexes. Collectively this may indicate female fetal pigs are more adaptive to gestational hS in terms of gene expression changes, and/or th.re may be sexually dimorphic differences

having lived for 23 years in San Francisco and having a birthday in February, I often encountered celebrations of Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival as it isknown in China, in the course of my own birthday celebrations. The date of the holiday is determined by the lunar calendar so its date in the Gregorian calendar moves between January and February. For most of those 23 years, the highlight of my birthday was a visit by my parents, who would host a dinner for me and many of my friends.
