Phytochemical Composition,Antioxidant and Antibacterial Properties of Pummelo(Citrus maxima(Burm.))*** Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium

The antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the phytochemical constituents of the pericarp, mesocarp and segment membrane crude ethanolic extracts of Pummelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.)) fruit were were tested against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium. Preliminary phytochemical test revealed the presence of phenols, tannins, saponins expressed as catechine quivalent (CE)/100ml and flavonoid expressed as gallic acid equivalent (gAE)/100ml. The order of which was as follows pericarp > segment membrane > mesocarp. The strongest antioxidant activity was obtained by the pericarp extract (29.64 expressed as % lipid peroxidation). The differences in the measured amount of phytochemicals and antioxidant activity among the three sample extracts were found to be significant. In terms of antimicrobial activity, the pericarp, mesocarp and segment membrane extracts generated zone of inhibitions measuring 17.10, 18.00 and 17.03 mm for S. typhimurium, respectively at 100% concentration. E. coli was noted to be inactive in all three sample extracts at 100% concentration. The capacity of E. coli to counteract the inhibitory effect of the phytochemicals contained in the pummelo extracts may be attributed to its rough corrugated cell wall and thick periplasmic space as opposed to the smooth curved and barely seen periplasmic space of S. typhimurium. However, no significant correlation was detected among the phytochemical content, antioxidant and in vitro antimicrobial activities of the sample extracts against S. typhimurium.

Design-space adaptation method for multiobjective and multidisciplinary optimization

This paper developed a new method that adaptively adjusts a design space by considering the actual solution distribution of a problem to overcome the conventional design-space adaptation method that assumes the solutions distribution to be a normal distribution because the distributions of solutions are rarely normal distributions for real-world *** developed method was applied to nineteen multiobjective test functions that are widely used to evaluate the characteristics and performance of optimization *** results showed that this method adapted the design space to an appropriate design space where the solution existence probability was *** optimization performance achieved using the developed method was higher than that of the conventional ***,the developed method was applied to the conceptual design of an unmanned spacecraft to confirm its validity in real-world design and multidisciplinaryoptimization *** results showed that the Pareto solutions of the developed method were superior to those of conventional ***,the optimization efficiency with the developed method was improved by more than 1.4 times over that of the conventional *** this regard,the developed method has the potential to be applied to complicated real-world optimization problems to achieve better performance and efficiency.

Engineering behaviour of in situ cored deep cement mixed marine deposits subjected to undrained and drained shearing

The deep cement mixing(DCM)is used to improve the capacity and reduce the settlement of the soft ground by forming cemented clay *** investigation on the mechanical behaviour of the DCM samples is limited to either laboratory-prepared samples or in-situ samples under unconfined *** this study,a series of drained and undrained triaxial shearing tests was performed on the in-situ cored DCM samples with high cement content to assess their mechanical *** is found that the drainage condition affects significantly the stiffness,peak and residual strengths of the DCM samples,which is mainly due to the state of excess pore water pressure at different strain levels,*** positive before the peak deviatoric stress and negative after the peak deviatoric stress,in the undrained *** slope of the failure envelope changes obviously with the confining pressures,being steeper at lower stress levels and flatter at higher stress *** strength parameters,effective cohesion and friction angle obtained from lower stress levels(c′0 andφ′0)are 400 kPa and 58°,respectively,which are deemed to be true for design in most DCM applications where the in-situ stress levels are normally at lower values of 50-200 ***,the computed tomography(CT)scanning system was adopted to visualize the internal structures of DCM *** is found that the clay pockets existing inside the DCM samples due to uneven mixing affect markedly their stress-strain behaviour,which is one of the main reasons for the high variability of the DCM samples.

Low-thermal-budget electrically active thick polysilicon for CMOS-First MEMS-last integration

Blade Wrap Angle Impact on Centrifugal Pump Performance:Entropy generation and Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis

The centrifugal pump is a prevalent power equipment widely used in different engineering patterns,and the impeller blade wrap angle significantly impacts its performance.A numerical investigation was conducted to analyze the influence of the blade wrap angle on flow characteristics and energy distribution of a centrifugal pump evaluated as a low specific speed with a value of *** study investigates six impellermodels that possess varying blade wrap angles(95°,105°,115°,125°,135°,and 145°)that were created while maintaining the same volute and other geometrical *** investigation of energy loss was conducted to evaluate the values of total and entropy generation rates(TEg,EgR).The fluid-structure interaction was considered numerically using the software tools ANSYS Fluent and *** elastic structural dynamic equation was used to estimate the structural response,while the shear stress transport k–ωturbulence model was utilized for the fluid domain *** findings suggest that the blade wrap angle has a significant influence on the efficiency of the *** impeller featuring a blade wrap angle of 145°exhibits higher efficiency,with a notable increase of 3.76%relative to the original *** in the blade wrap angle impact the energy loss,shaft power,and pump *** model with a 145°angle exhibited a maximum equivalent stress of 14.8MPa and a total deformation of 0.084 *** results provide valuable insights into the intricate flow mechanism of the centrifugal pump,particularly when considering various blade wrap angles.

Predatory bacteriophages have evolved a vast array of depolymerases for bacteria capture and *** depolymerases are enzymes responsible for degrading diverse bacterial surface *** are exploited as antibiofilm agents and antimicrobial adjuvants while rarely inducing bacterial resistance,making them an invaluable asset in the era of antibiotic *** depolymerases have been investigated preclinically,with evidence indicating that depolymerases with appropriate dose regimens can safely and effectively combat different multidrug-resistant pathogens in animal infection ***,some formulation approaches have been developed for improved stability and activity of ***,depolymerase formulation is limited to liquid dosage form and remains in its infancy,posing a significant hurdle to their clinical translation,compounded by challenges in their applicability and *** development must address these obstacles for clinical ***,after unravelling the history,diversity,and therapeutic use of depolymerases,we summarized the preclinical efficacy and existing formulation findings of recombinant ***,the challenges and perspectives of depolymerases as therapeutics for humans were assessed to provide insights for their further development.

Effect of non-uniform swelling on coal multiphysics during gas injection: The triangle approach

In current dual porosity/permeability models,there exists a fundamental assumption that the adsorption-induced swelling is distributed uniformly within the representative elementary volume (REV),irrespective of its internal structures and transient ***,both internal structures and transient processes can lead to the non-uniform *** this study,we hypothesize that the non-uniform swelling is responsible for why coal permeability in experimental measurements is not only controlled by the effective stress but also is affected by the adsorption-induced *** propose a concept of the swelling triangle composed of swelling paths to characterize the evolution of the non-uniform swelling and serve as a core link in coupled multiphysics.A swelling path is determined by a dimensionless volumetric ratio and a dimensionless swelling *** swelling paths have the same start and end point,and each swelling path represents a unique swelling *** swelling path as the diagonal of the triangle represents the case of the uniform swelling while that as the two perpendicular boundaries represents the case of the localized *** paths of all intermediate cases populate inside the *** corresponding relations between the swelling path and the response of coal multiphysics are established by a non-uniform swelling *** define this method as the triangle approach and corresponding models as swelling path-based *** proposed concept and models are verified against a long-term experimental measurement of permeability and strains under constant effective *** results demonstrate that during gas injection,coal multiphysics responses have a close dependence on the swelling path,and that in both future experiments and field predictions,this dependence must be considered.

By conducting a two-dimensional experimental study,this paper aims to enhance the understanding of the mechanism of sand convective motions in the vicinity of a wall subjected to long-term cyclic lateral *** experimental tests were conducted in a rectangular sandbox with a transparent front-wall,through which the process of sand particle motions could be recorded by using a high-resolution digital *** images were processed with a high time-resolved PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry)*** on the experimental data,this work(1)presents the sand flow field in the convective zones;(2)provides means to describe the convection mechanism;(3)proposes the relationships between the loading conditions and dimensions of the region with intense sand movement;and(4)elaborates the similarity of the sand flow velocity structure within the sand convective zones.
