Chemical Characterization and in Vitro Antitumor Activity of the Essential Oils from the Leaves and Flowers of Callistemon viminalis

The objective of this study was to characterize and verify the in vitro antitumor activity of essential oils (EOs) extracted from the leaves and flowers of Callistemon viminalis. The EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation using a modified Clevenger apparatus. The identification and quantification of constituents were performed on a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer and a gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector. The antitumoral activity was evaluated by a colorimetric assay (MTS) using different cell lines derived from human tumors (breast, lung, glioblastoma, and melanoma). The major constituents of the EOs of leaves and flowers were similar, only quantitative differences being observed. The compounds 1,8-cineole, α-pinene and α-terpineol were found in concentrations of 50.4%, 25.8% and 8.7% in the EOs obtained from the leaves and 48.8%, 24.5% and 3.9% in the EOs obtained from the flowers, respectively. The cytotoxic activity of the EOs was observed only in melanoma cultures (HT144). Cultures treated for 48 h with EOs from leaves and flowers (200 μg·mL-1) reduced the viability by 40% and 25%, respectively. Thus, the antiproliferative activity of the EO from leaves was more pronounced than the EO from flowers in cells derived from melanoma.

Solid-state cooling based on caloric effects is considered a viable alternative to replace the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration *** barocaloric materials,recent results show that elastomers are promising candidates for cooling applications around *** the present paper,we report supergiant barocaloric effects observed in acetoxy silicone rubber—a very popular,low-cost and environmentally friendly *** values of adiabatic temperature change and reversible isothermal entropy change were obtained upon moderate applied pressures and relatively low *** huge barocaloric changes are associated both to the polymer chain rearrangements induced by confined compression and to the first-order structural *** results are comparable to the best barocaloric materials reported so far,opening encouraging prospects for the application of elastomers in near future solid-state cooling devices.

High Frequency of Antiviral Resistance Mutations in HBV Genotypes A2 and H: Multidrug Resistance Strains in Mexico

Background and Aims:Lamivudine(3TC),telbivudine(LdT),entecavir(ETV),adefovir(ADF),and tenofovir(TFV)are drugs used to treat hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection,but specific mutations allow some viruses to become resistant to antiviral drugs or to acquire immune escape *** mutations have not been thoroughly investigated in *** study aimed to estimate the prevalence of HBV antiviral resistance and escape ***:This cross-sectional study analyzed 158 *** DNA was extracted,amplified,and sequenced in serum samples using the spin column method,PCR assay,and Sanger’s sequencing,*** genotypes were determined,and HBV mutations were tested using the Geno2pheno ***:Overall,68.4%(108/158)of HBV patients were infected with genotype H,followed by G(11.4%,18/158),A2(10.8%,17/158),F1b(6.9.0%,11/158),D(1.9%,3/158),and E(0.6%,1/158),and 5.1%(8/158)had evidence of *** prevalence of resistance mutations was 8.2%(13/158)and the most common combined mutation was rt180M+***,we found the combinations rt180M+rt204V+rt173L(n=2)and rt180M+rt204V+rt202G(n=1)that confer multidrug resistance to 3TC,LdT,and *** mutations were found in genotypes A2(11.8%,2/17),and H(10.2%,11/108),and escape mutations were detected in HBV genotypes A2(11.8%,2/17),H(10.2%,11/108),F1b(9.1%,1/11)and G(5.6%,1/18).Conclusions:The highest prevalence of antiviral resistance mutations or escape mutations was detected in HBV genotypes A2 and *** earliest cases of HBV multidrug resistance were detected in Mexico.

Management of discarded tires is a compelling environmental issue *** there are several approaches developed to recycle waste tire rubbers,their application in solid-state cooling is still *** the high barocaloric potential verified for elastomers,the use of waste tire rubber(WTR)as a refrigerant in solid-state cooling devices is very ***,we investigated the barocaloric effects in WTR and polymer blends made of vulcanized natural rubber(VNR)and WTR,to evaluate its feasibility for solid-state cooling *** adiabatic temperature changes and the isothermal entropy changes reach giant values,as well as the performance parameters,being comparable or even better than most barocaloric materials in ***,pure WTR and WTR-based samples also present a faster thermal exchange than VNR,consisting of an additional advantage of using these discarded ***,the present findings evidence the encouraging perspectives of employing waste rubbers in solid-state cooling based on barocaloric effects,contributing to both the recycling of polymers and the sustainable energy technology field.

Acute calculous cholecystitis(ACC) is the most frequent complication of cholelithiasis and represents one-third of all surgical emergency hospital admissions, many aspects of the disease are still a matter of debate. Knowledge of the current evidence may allow the surgical team to develop practical bedside decision-making strategies, aiming at a less demanding procedure and lower frequency of complications. In this regard, recommendations on the diagnosis supported by specific criteria and severity scores are being implemented, to prioritize patients eligible for urgency surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the best treatment for ACC and the procedure should ideally be performed within 72h. Early surgery is associated with better results in comparison to delayed surgery. In addition, when to suspect associated common bile duct stones and how to treat them when found are still debated. The antimicrobial agents are indicated for high-risk patients and especially in the presence of gallbladder necrosis. The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics and in some cases with antifungal agents is related to better prognosis. Moreover, an emerging strategy of not converting to open, a difficult laparoscopic cholecystectomy and performing a subtotal cholecystectomy is recommended by adept surgical teams. Some authors support the use of percutaneous cholecystostomy as an alternative emergency treatment for acute Cholecystitis for patients with severe comorbidities.

High prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in Crohn's disease patients according to serum retinol levels and the relative dose-response test

AIM:To assess the vitamin A status of patients with Crohn's disease(CD) by evaluating serum retinol levels and the relative dose response(RDR) test(liver retinol stores).METHODS:Vitamin A nutritional status was measured by serum retinol obtained by high performance liquid chromatography and the RDR test for evaluation of the hepatic *** composition was performed by densitometry by dual-energy X-ray *** A dietary intake was assessed from a semiquantitative food frequency ***:This study included 38 CD patients and 33 *** serum retinol concentrations were detected in 29% of CD patients vs 15% in controls(P < 0.005).The RDR test was positive in 37% of CD patients vs 12% in controls,which indicated inadequate hepatic vitamin A stores(P < 0.005).Individuals with hypovitaminosis A had lower BMI and body fat compared with those without this *** was no association between vitamin A deficiency and its dietary intake,ileal location,presence of disease activity and prior bowel ***:Patients with CD have higher prevalence of vitamin A deficiency,as assessed by two independent methods.

Characterization Production Systems and Productivity Indices of Local Pigs of East Timor

The objective of this study was to evaluate the production system and productivity indices of local swine raised in subsistence production system in East *** 1,096 respondents were interviewed in fitting villages in eight *** each village,10%of breeders were interviewed as respondents,using simple random method and the interviews based on established *** was observed that about 80%-90%of total respondents still used subsistence production *** result of descriptive statistical analysis showed that the average of piglets per litter was 4-6 and weight of piglets at birth was 0.97±0.22 *** age of weaning of piglets and the weaning weight was 3.94±0.72 months and 5.56±0.88 kg,*** age of the first breeding gilts was 8-10 months;calving interval was 6-12 *** period of females was 3-12 years,and the number of mortality rate of piglets was 0.17%to 1%per production *** it was concluded that the subsistence production system could affect the productivity level of local pigs.

Distribution of polychaetes in the shallow, sublittoral zone of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica in the early and late austral summer

This study assessed the spatial distribution pa- ttern of soft-sediment polychaetes on the near-shore of Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica. In the early and late summer of 2003 /04, seven sites at three different depths (20,30 and 60 meters) were sampled using a van Veen grab. 8,668 individuals all told, belonging to 67 species and 23 families, were identified. The families Terebellidae, Syllidae and Maldanidae were the most speciose. Mean densities ranged from 45.2 to 388.1 ind. 0.1 m-2 in the early summer, and from 29 to 183 ind.0.1m-2 in the late. The species Aphelochaeta cincinnata, Levinsenia gracilis and Rhodine antarctica were the most frequent and abundant. Initially, mean biomass ranged from 0.11 to 5.27 g.0.1 m-2, in the early season and from 0.35 to 5.86 g.0.1 m-2 towards the end. Aglaophamus trissophyllus, Eupolymnia sp. and Barrukia cristata were the species with the highest biomass. Polychaete taxocoenosis structure remained similar in both periods. In the early summer, mean densities, biomass and number of species were lower at 30 meters and higher at 60, whereas in the late, these differences were higher among transects. Ice impacts, mainly anchor-ice, in the early summer, as well as icebergs later on, most likely caused the differences encountered.

The Fire Danger Rating Index ＂FMA＂ as Control of Remote Sensoring System

Recent remote monitoring surveys of smoke produced by burning and forest fires using weather radar equipment showed excellent preliminary results, but their progress is hindered due to the high operating cost of radar systems. The fire danger rating index is a good indicator of the event occurrence probability, what contributes to the monitoring areas and adds value to the alert degree information. The application of FMA fire danger index ＂Formula de Monte Alegre＂ for areas in radar coverage radius of the S-band weather radar operated by the Meteorological Research Institute, IPMet, S^fo Paulo State University, efficiently optimize the use of the radar equipment, significantly reduce operational costs, enable new research and promise results which have already reduced the average response time between ignition and detection for less than 5 minutes. It reduces more than 50% response time considered optimal for conventional detection systems. Thus, the ＂FMA＂ values act as a trigger （on-off） in the remote monitoring system of forest fires, optimizing its use at low cost, avoiding the possible stress of equipment and enabling the advance of research monitoring, detection of burnings and forest fires using weather radar.

Reviving Direct Observation Methods for Physical Activity Behavior
