Changes in sternocleidomastoid and descending portion of trapezius muscles in terms of electromyography and pressure pain threshold: women with chronic neck pain after acupuncture treatment

OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the sternocleidomastoid and the descending portion of the trapezius muscles in terms of electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold in women with chronic cervical pain after acupuncture treatment.METHODS:Twenty-five women,aged 18-50 years[(31±3)years],with chronic neck and temporomandibular disorder participated in the study.The electromyographic activity of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the descending portion of the trapezius muscle were recorded at rest,during shoulder elevation,(left and right)rotation of the neck and crucifix position.Maximum voluntary contraction was used to normalize the electromyographic activity data.The points used for acupuncture were Jiache(ST 6),Xiaguan(ST 7),Quanliao(SI 18),Tinggong(SI 19),Yifeng(TE-17),Fengchi(GB 20),Renzhong(GV 26),Yangbai(GB-14),and points of the lower and upper limbs:Tai chong(LV 3),Zusanli(ST 36),Sanyinjiao(SP 6),Kunlun(BL 60),He Gu(LI4)and Yanglingquan(GB 34).The treatment course was 10 sessions,30 min long per session,and twice a week.The final electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold data collection were performed 15 d after treatment completion.RESULTS:The normalized electromyographic activity and pressure pain threshold data were tabulated and submitted to statistical analysis using t-test(P<0.05).Significant difference was observed during shoulder elevation for the left trapezius muscle,during neck rotation from the right side to the left,and pressure pain threshold for the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles,bilaterally,after the acupuncture treatment.CONCLUSION:The acupuncture treatment improved the neck muscles in terms of electromyographic activity and increased the tolerance to chronic pain in women.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of postural imbalances, which can interfere with the mandible position and affect the actions of the stomatognathic system. Materials and Methods: Forty men, aged between 23 to 29 years, were selected and divided into two groups: Group I comprised 20 healthy individuals with no clinical postural change diagnosis;Group II, 20 individuals who had ACL surgical, unilateral with patellar tendon graft, paired individual to individual (age and weight). All of them were submitted to an electromyography in different clinical conditions. In addition, a condylar biomechanical assessment was performed through videogrametry. Results: In electromyography and videogrametry, a normal standard biomechanical was observed for both groups, however, Group GII—Ligamentplasty presented an inhibition of the masticatory muscles and decreased joint kinesthetic. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that after the reconstruction of the ACL, individuals presented changes in the stomatog-nathic system.

Complete dentures with Nobilo's sliding plates:A condylar position and electromyograph analysis

Objective: This study was performed with the purpose a report clinical cases involving condylar position and Nóbilo’s sliding plates. Background: Patients may present temporomandibular disorder (TMD), which is characterized by pain in masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints and limited mandible movements. Treatment involving oral rehabilitation with the use of complete dentures with Nóbilo’s sliding plates has been an alternative for the treatment of TMD. Materials and Methods: Nine patients with a history of TMD signs and symptoms (RDC/TMD)—in particular, muscular and articular pain—received pain evaluations, mandibular movement analysis, transcranial radiography and an electromyographic analysis of the masseter and temporalis muscles before and after the use of complete dentures with Nóbilo’s sliding plates. Results: After treatment, the patients had reduced painful symptoms, an increase in mandibular movement and adequate electromyographic activity. The normalized EMG data were ta-bulated and analyzed statistically using SPSS version 17.0 for Windows (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), and the values were compared by umpaired independent Student’s t-test. Conclusion: The use of Nóbilo’s sliding plates promoted improvements in electromyographic activity, muscular pain and man-dibular movement.

On the optimisation of age of the air in the breathing zone of floor heating systems:The role of ventilation design

For a mechanically ventilated space,the nominal age of the air can be obtained by the reciprocal of the air change rate.However,values of the local mean age of the air in practice may differ to some extent from the nominal one since the nominal time constant employs as reference the theoretical optimum model.This discrepancy could become more prominent in spaces conditioning with both ventilation and heating system where the indoor air pattern is affected by turbulent mixed convection flow.Given importance of knowledge on the distribution of age of the air in these spaces,the present study provides insights on how ventilation design in floor heating systems can optimise the delivery of fresh air into the breathing zone.In this context,by establishing a computational fluid dynamic(CFD)model validated against experimental data,the local mean age of the air as well as the indoor air quality(IAQ)indices in the breathing zone of the floor heating system are examined under different ventilation modes.Six different ventilation scenarios are regarded in order to find the optimal ventilation design in terms of the delivery of the fresh air and ventilation effectiveness in occupied space.Furthermore,the integrated effects of the floor temperature and inlet supply temperature along with the ventilation design on the distribution of local age of the air are addressed.The obtained results indicate that the up-supply ventilation strategy is more efficient than down-supply one in the ventilation effectiveness and delivery of fresh air into the breathing zone.Moreover,it is shown that the mean age of the air in the breathing zone of the up-supply ventilation increases with increment of the Ri(Richardson number),whereas an increase in Ri improves the delivery of fresh air in down-supply mode.For a given floor temperature,the similar trend is also observed in the variation of age of the air with the characteristic temperature of supply inlet,namely the temperature difference between inlet supply and surrounding walls.

The 2020 US cancer screening deficit and the timing of adults’ most recent screen: a population-based cross-sectional study

Objective In 2020,cancer screenings declined,resulting in a cancer screening deficit.The significance of this deficit,however,has yet to be quantified from a population health perspective.Our study addresses this evidence gap by examining how the pandemic changed the timing of American adults’most recent cancer screen.Methodology We obtained population-based,cancer screening data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System(BRFSS)(2010,2012,2014,2016,2018,2020).Mammograms,pap smears and colonoscopies were each specified as a variable of mutually exclusive categories to indicate the timing since the most recent screening(never,0–1 years,1–2 years,3+years).Our cross-sectional,quasi-experimental design restricts the sample to adults surveyed in January,February or March.We then leverage a quirk in the BRFSS implementation and consider adults surveyed in the second year of the 2020 survey wave as exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic.Respondents surveyed in January 2020–March 2020 were considered unexposed.To estimate the impact of exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic on the timing of recent cancer screenings,we constructed linear and logistic regression models which control for sociodemographic characteristics associated with screening patterns,and state fixed effects and temporal trend fixed effects to control for confounding.Results In 2020,the cancer screening deficit was largely due to a 1year delay among adults who receive annual screening,as the proportion of adults reporting a cancer screen in the past year declined by a nearly identical proportion of adults reporting their most recent cancer screen 1–2 years ago(3%–4%points).However,the relative change was higher for mammograms and pap smears(17%)than colonoscopies(4%).We also found some evidence that the proportion of women reporting never having completed a mammogram declined in 2020,but the mechanisms for this finding should be further explored with the release of future data.Conclusion Our estimates for the pandemic’s effect on cancer screening rates are

Business Combinations, Goodwill and Deferred Taxes： Evidences Emerging From a Comparative Analysis Between Italy and Bulgaria

The starting point for the research was the evidence of a possible contradiction in the provisions of IAS 12 on goodwill and deferred income taxes, i. e., about the need to calculate deferred income taxation on temporary differences relating to all assets except for goodwill. This paper aims at exploring the degree of consistency between the theoretical provisions of International Accounting Standards (IAS)/International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and their actual application by the management of Italian and Bulgarian listed companies, as regards the accounting treatments of deferred income taxes relating to the item "goodwill". The findings suggest that there are some differences between the accounting methods used by the management of most Italian listed companies and the provisions of IAS/IFRS. It can be argued that the rules given by IAS/IFRS are sometimes contradictory, since they may cause doubts in interpretation. As a consequence, in the end of the paper, an amendment to the provisions, set forth in IAS/IFRS concerning the accounting treatment of deferred income taxes relating to the item "goodwill", is proposed.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced background.This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS experiment.Two taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
