Characterization and functions of beta defensins in the epididymis

The epididymal β-defensins have evolved by repeated gene duplication and divergence to encode a family of proteins that provide direct protection against pathogens and also support the male reproductive tract in its primary function. Male tract defensins also facilitate recovery from pathogen attack. The β-defensins possess ancient conserved sequence and structural features widespread in multi-cellular organisms, suggesting fundamental roles in species survival. Primate SPAG11, the functional fusion of two ancestrally independent β-defensin genes, produces a large family of alternatively spliced transcripts that are expressed according to tissue-specific and species-specific constraints. The complexity of SPAG11 varies in different branches of mammalian evolution. Interactions of human SPAG11D with host proteins indicate involvement in multiple signaling pathways. （Asian J Andro12007 July; 9： 453- 462）

Effects of grain size and Al addition on the activation volume and strain-rate sensitivity of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

The activation volume(V∗)and strain-rate sensitivity exponent(m)of CoCrFeMnNi and Al_(0.5)CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloys(hEAs)with various grain sizes(ranging between 2.4 and 356μm)were measured at different strain rates and strain levels at room *** the strain rate decreased,the plastic strain decreased,and the grain size increased,V∗*** enhanced solid-solution strengthening by addition of aluminum decreased V∗.The hassen plot was modified to capture the grain-size depen-dence of V∗by considering the grain-size dependence of the dislocation *** the plastic strain increased,the strain rate decreased,and the grain size decreased,m *** behavior of m could be quantitatively predicted by using equations derived for the grain-size-dependent V∗and flow *** difference in the grain-size dependence of m between conventional face centered cubic(FCC)metals and FCC hEAs over the nanograin size range could not be explained in terms of a relatively large hall-Petch slope of the FCC hEAs compared with that of the FCC conventional metals,but was explainable in terms of a substantially higher probability of activation of grain-boundary diffusion-controlled grain-boundary-sliding mechanism at nanograin sizes in the FCC conventional metals than in the FCC hEAs.

Individual Book Reports: An Application of Differentiated Instruction in Two Public health College Courses

As an anecdote to the one-size-fits-all curriculum, differentiation presents a pedagogical opportunity to accommodate learner variance. Differentiated instruction typically aims to address variance in at least one of the following areas: 1) student readiness;2) student learning profiles;and 3) student interests. While each aim is fundamentally important to effectively differentiating instruction, the purpose of this descriptive best practice paper was to present a simple approach for addressing variance in individual student interest in a university setting. Participants in this teaching activity included 175 students enrolled in one of two undergraduate-level courses in the Department of Public health at a large private university in the United States. Each participant was asked to select a book related to his or her chosen career path and that aligned with a topic covered in the course. Students selected the book of their choice and submitted the title to the principle investigator who reviewed each selection. Students were given approximately six weeks to read their selected books and write a brief book report. Participants completed a brief online survey assessing the value of this teaching approach. Descriptive analyses indicate this teaching activity was widely considered to be meaningful and beneficial, supporting the inclusion of differentiated instructional approaches at the university level.

Diesel engine exhaust exposures in two underground mines

Exposure to diesel engine exhaust(DE) is a major concern in underground mines. It has been linked to cardiopulmonary diseases and is classified as a human carcinogen. The goal of this study is to assess DE exposures in workers at two underground gold mines, to compare exposure levels within and between the mines, and to compare different methods of measuring DE exposures, namely respirable combustible dust(RCD), elemental carbon(EC) and total carbon(TC). Ambient and personal breathing zone(PBZ) measurements were taken. Side-by-side monitoring of RCD and of the respirable fraction of EC and TC(EC_Rand TC_R) was carried out in the workers' breathing zone during full-shift *** ambient measurements, in addition to EC_R, TC_Rand RCD, a submicron aerosol fraction(less than 1 mm) of EC and TC was also sampled(EC_1and TC_1). Average ambient results of 240 mg/m^3 in RCD, 150 mg/m^3 in EC_Rand 210 mg/m^3 in TC_Rare obtained. Average PBZ results of 190 mg/m^3 in RCD,84 mg/m^3 in EC3Rand 150 mg/min TC_Rare obtained. Very good correlation is found between EC_Rand EC_1 with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.99(p he two logtransformed concentrations. No differences are reported between EC_Rand EC_1, nor between TC_Rand TC_1, since ratios are equal to 1.04, close to 1, in both cases. highest exposures are reported for loadhaul-dump(LhD) and jumbo drill operators and conventional miners. Significant exposure differences are reported between mines for truck and LhD operators(p he average TC_R/EC_Rratio is 1.6 for PBZ results, and 1.3 for ambient results. The variability observed in the TC_R/EC_Rratio shows that interferences from non-diesel related organic carbon can skew the interpretation of results when relying only on TC data.
