Trophic niche changes associated with the eradication of invasive mammals in an insular lizard: an assessment using isotopes

Invasive species are a major threat to island biodiversity,and their eradications have substantially contributed to the conservation of island ***,the consequences of eradications on the trophic ecology of native taxa are largely ***,we used the eradication of invasive black rats Rattus rattus and European rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus from the Berlenga Island,in the western coast of Portugal,as a whole-ecosystem experiment to investigate the effects of the eradication of invasive mammals on the trophic niche and body dimensions of the island-restricted Berlenga wall lizard Podarcis carbonelli berlengensis over a 2-year *** results suggest an expansion of the isotopic niche and an intensification of the sexual dimorphism of the lizard following mammal ***,we found considerable variability in isotopic niche across the island and detected evidence of sex-specific and season-modulated nutritional requirements of this threatened *** findings support that the eradication of 2 of the planets most problematic invasive vertebrates led to changes in the lizard trophic niche and sexual dimorphism in just 2 *** suggests that the ecological pressuresfor example,prey availability and habitat structureto which lizards are exposed have substantially changed *** study emphasizes the scientific value of island eradications as experiments to address a wide range of ecological questions and adds to the increasing body of evidence supporting substantial conservation gains associated with these restoration interventions.

Disaster forensic approaches aim to identify the causes of disasters to support disaster risk ***,few studies have conducted a systematic literature review of scientific articles that labeled themselves as a forensic approach to *** article provides a qualitative analysis of these forensic studies,focusing on five main issues:(1)the methodologies applied;(2)the forensic approaches used in the disaster risk management phases;(3)the hazards addressed;(4)if the methodologies involve social participation,and using what types of participation;and(5)if there are references to urban planning in the scientific studies *** results showed a predominance of the Forensic Investigations of Disasters(FORIN)and Post-Event Review Capability(PERC)methodologies used in isolation or *** is a need for methodologies that engage people in participatory FORIN,fostering the co-production of knowledge and action research approaches.

The growth and production modeling of individual trees of Eucalyptus urophylla plantations

Individual tree models(ITMs)are classified as growth and production models for projecting current and future forest *** are more complex than other growth and production models,show a higher level of detail and,consequently,produce a better modeling ***,the accuracy and efficiency of ITMs have not been properly assessed to *** this study,we estimated the growth in height,diameter,and individual tree volume of a Eucalyptus urophylla plantation by applying an *** used a continuing forest inventory dataset in which 1554 individual trees within 29 permanent plots were measured in the field over a 6-year period(24 to 72 months).Each individual tree volume was estimated for future tree *** achieve this,we adjusted the model to predict the height and diameter growth,and the probability of mortality as a function of the competition *** ITM accuracy was assessed based on the analysis of variance results and,subsequently,the multiple mean comparison test at the 5%significance *** tree volumes predicted by the ITM for the forest stand aged 72 months,beginning at ages 24,36,48,and 60 months,were compared to the field measured tree volume acquired from the 72-month forest inventory that was used as the reference *** and observed tree volumes were similar when the estimation was based on the 48-month forest *** results might help to reduce financial costs of forest inventory because the ITM produces accurate future predictions of forest stand *** estimated ITM for Eucalyptus plantations using measurement intervals up to 2 years is recommended because it significantly reduced the projected volume discrepancy compared to the field measurements.

Background The increase in the frequency and intensity of droughts is pointed out as one of the main factors altering biogeochemical cycles in the Amazon *** eco-nutritional approach using X-ray fluorescence micro-analysis(μXRF)is proposed to verify the long-and short-term effects of droughts on the growth and xylem nutrient concentrations of Cedrela fissilis *** Fourteen radii were selected from a tree-ring width chronology and X-rayed by Itrax *** of ring width,wood density,and concentrations of aluminum(Al),phosphorus(P),sulfur(S),calcium(Ca),potassium(K),manganese(Mn),iron(Fe)and strontium(Sr)together with Al/Ca,Ca/Mn,K/Ca,Sr/Ca and Mn/S ratios were constructed and correlated with precipitation,temperature,the difference between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration(P-PET)and standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index(SPEI).Results During dry years,*** showed narrower,less dense rings,lower Al,P,S and Ca,and higher K and Fe concentrations(the opposite was found in wet years).Ring width decreased(together with Al,P,S,K,Ca,Mn,Fe,Sr,Al/Ca,K/Ca and Sr/Ca)and wood density increased(together with Ca/Mn and Mn/S),which was associated with an increase in evapotranspiration and temperature over time,mainly since *** fissilis showed a tendency to increase its capacity for resistance,and a recovery and resilience in growth over time associated with responses in Al,Ca,P and ***,it showed a risk in the capacity for recovery of the pre-drought density values,associated with unsatisfactory responses in Al,Ca,K,Fe and *** This study is the first attempt to analyze tree-ring nutritional evidences of *** trees to climate sensitivity and resilience to drought,based on long-term data from seasonal moist tropical forests of the *** data suggested that *** is undergoing alterations in the concentration,use and redistribution of nutrients associated with increasing wood density and d

With the expansion of eucalyptus crops to areas with severe water limitations,physiological studies involving eucalyptus clones to identify those that are tolerant to water stress become *** objective of this study was to assess morphological and physiological responses by eucalyptus clones subjected to drought stress and *** experiment consisted of three eucalyptus clones:VC865,I224 and I144 and two water regimes:control and water stress followed by rehydration,with six *** water potential,gas exchange,maximum quantum efficiency of photo systemⅡand plant height and stem diameter were evaluated under drought stress and ***6 d of rehydration,the number of leaves,leaf area and dry mass of root,leaf,stem and their total were *** clones showed intense reduction of gas exchange during the drought stress period,and only VC865 and 1144 showed rapid recovery with 3 d of *** 1224 showed greater reduction in height,stem diameter,number of leaves,water potential at midday(Ψ_(w)_(Midday)),and maximum quantum efficiency of photosystemⅡ(F_(v)/F_(m)).Clones VC865and T144 showed lower reductions inΨ_(wMidday)and F_(v)/F_(m) under ***865 had lower reductions in leaf number,leaf area and higher leaf dry mass,while clone I144 had higher height and lower reduction in root dry mass *** these clones showed higher water use efficiency with 3d of *** different phenotypic plasticities gave the clones VC865 and 1144 efficient mechanisms of acclimatization to stress and more drought tolerance,enhancing their greater capacity for recovery after stress,which allowed lower dry mass *** 1224,however,was more susceptible to drought stress,undergoing greater physiological damage with only partial recovery during rehydration.

ENERGY ESTIMATES FOR DELAY DIFFUSION-REACTION EQUATIONS

In this paper we consider nonlinear delay diffusion-reaction equations with initial and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The behaviour and the stability of the solution of such initial boundary value problems （IBVPs） are studied using the energy method. Simple numerical methods are considered for the computation of numerical approximations to the solution of the nonlinear IBVPs. Using the discrete energy method we study the stability and convergence of the numerical approximations. Numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate our theoretical results.

A Rapid Parameter of Enzyme-Treated Cellulosic Material Revealed by Reducing Sugar Release

This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of enzymes in purifying and reducing the degree of polymerization of cellulose for the production of dissolving *** goal was to determine the contributions of xylanase(X)and endoglucanase(EG)in the treatment of pulp,specifically by quantifying the formation of soluble and insoluble reducing sugars using the dinitrosalycilic acid(DNS)***,the release of soluble reducing sugars(RSSol)was enhanced after xylanase treatment,while endoglucanase(EG)treatment led to changes in insoluble reducing sugars(RSIns).The maximum synergism was observed for RSIns when a high ratio of endoglucanase to xylanase(320EG:5X/g pulp)was *** relative contribution of endoglucanase to RSins was determined to be 15.6%of the total reducing *** viscosity of pulps treated with xylanase decreased only by 7%,whereas endoglucanase treatment significantly reduced viscosity by 45%.Modifications in the particle size were observed after pulp treatment with the combination of endoglucanase and *** summary,the DNS test is a rapid and effective method for evaluating the efficiency of enzyme treatments on *** measurement of RSIns correlates with changes in pulp viscosity to different extents,providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of enzyme treatments.

Analysis of the impact of large scale seismic retrofitting strategies through the application of a vulnerability-based approach on traditional masonry buildings

The buildings＇ capacity to maintain minimum structural safety levels during natural disasters, such as earthquakes, is recognisably one of the aspects that most influence urban resilience. Moreover, the public investment in risk mitigation strategies is fimdamental, not only to promote social and urban and resilience, but also to limit consequent material, human and environmental losses. Despite the growing awareness of this issue, there is still a vast number of traditional masonry buildings spread throughout many European old city centres that lacks of adequate seismic resistance, requiring therefore urgent retrofitting interventions in order to both reduce their seismic vulnerability and to cope with the increased seismic requirements of recent code standards. Thus, this paper aims at contributing to mitigate the social and economic impacts of earthquake damage scenarios through the development of vulnerability-based comparative analysis of some of the most popularretrofitting techniques applied after the 1998 Azores earthquake. The influence of each technique individually and globally studied resorting to a seismic vulnerability index methodology integrated into a GIS tool and damage and loss scenarios are constructed and critically discussed. Finally, the economic balance resulting from the implementation of that techniques are also examined.
