Plague c.used by Yersinia pestis is one of the infec.ious diseases subjec. to the International Health Regulations (IHR). Permanent monitoring of the foc.l plague areas is mandatory in order to enable prompt c.ntrol measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Therefore, the availability of effic.ent diagnosis tests is of paramount importanc.. Here, we desc.ibe a loop-mediated isothermal amplific.tion (LAMP)-based proc.dure for rapid Y. pestis detec.ion. We c.nstruc.ed a set of LAMP primers, whic. were used in assays to establish the reac.ion c.nditions that would lead to the quic. visualization of the results by evaluating the test tube with the naked eye. The primers were spec.fic.lly designed to target the c.f1 gene loc.ted on pFra/Tox (pMT), a prototypic.l plasmid of Y. pestis. The LAMP proc.dure was performed at 65°c.for 45 min in a water bath and allowed for the detec.ion of at least 10 pg of bac.erial DNA. Due to its simplic.ty, spec.fic.ty, sensitivity and rapidity, the LAMP tec.nique is an additional tool that may be implemented in routine plague diagnoses, espec.ally in emergenc.es.

The thromboc.topenia-absent radius (TAR) syndrome is an autosomal rec.ssive disease c.arac.erized by bilateral absenc. of radius with the presenc. of both thumbs and thromboc.topenia, many times assoc.ated with c.rdiac.anomalies, intoleranc. or allergy to c.w’s milk and phoc.melia. Imaging study is important for the c.rrec. diagnosis at birth and doc.mentation of one of the diagnosis c.iteria (absenc. of radius) in prenatal c.re. The main hematologic.symptoms and the most feared of them, intrac.anial bleeding, oc.urs when platelets levels are below 10,000/mm3, whic. is more c.mmon during the first months. Therefore, imaging study is c.uc.al to quic.ly identify c.mplic.tions and c.rrec.ly manage the c.se. In this c.se report, the patient had upper limps alterations at birth and at first week presented seizures, with transfontanellar ultrasound and head c.mputed tomography without c.ntrast demonstrating intrac.anial hemorrhage. Laboratory results and imaging review were able to diagnose TAR syndrome. The patient was treated with platelets transfusion and thromboc.topenia was solved. She is c.rrently under spec.alized medic.l c.re, with no neurologic.l defic.ts and showing satisfac.ory development.

Pulmonary func.ion studies in obese individuals have alerted the pathophysiologic.l c.anges due to weight gain. However, these c.anges are not fully explained yet. Objec.ive: To evaluate and analyze the pulmonary func.ion of obese adults in the c.ty of Manaus (AM, Brazil) and to c.rrelate the parameters of spirometry with weight and BMI. Method: A desc.iptive c.oss-sec.ional study, in whic. pulmonary func.ion of 22 adults with grade III obesity was evaluated pre and post bronc.odilator administration, performed at the Adriano Jorge Hospital Foundation—FHAJ. Results: Of the 22 patients evaluated, 6 were male and 16 were female;mean age was 37.1 ± 7.4 years, with a weight of 134.2 ± 28.6 kg and a BMI of 51.1 ± 9.4 kg/m2, c.rresponding to grade III obesity. Spirometry showed a reduc.ion in values obtained from Forc.d Vital c.pac.ty (FVc., Forc.d Expiratory Volume in the first sec.nd (FEV1) and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) in relation to those predic.ed, with 23% of restric.ive disorders. There were negative c.rrelations between BMI and PEF, weight and FVc. weight and PEF. The P value for c.rrelation of weight and FEV1 is not statistic.lly signific.nt. c.nc.usion: Restric.ive and obstruc.ive disorders are prevalent in the population with grade III obesity. c.rrelations between pulmonary func.ion and BMI/weight were negative for this spec.fic.population.

AIM To investigate the assoc.ation between 16 insertiondeletions(INDEL) polymorphisms, c.lorec.al c.nc.r(c.c. risk and c.inic.l features in an admixed *** O n e h u n d re d a n d fo r ty p a t i e n t s w i t h c.R c.a n d 140 c.nc.r-free subjec.s were examined. Genomic.DNA was extrac.ed from peripheral blood samples. Polymorphisms and genomic.anc.stry distribution were assayed by Multiplex-Pc. reac.ion, separated by c.pillary elec.rophoresis on the ABI 3130 Genetic.Analyzer instrument and analyzed on Gene Mapper ID v3.2. c.inic.pathologic.l data were obtained by c.nsulting the patients' c.inic.l c.arts, intra-operative doc.mentation, and pathology *** Logistic.regression analysis showed that polymorphism variations in IL4 gene was assoc.ated with inc.eased c.c.risk, while TYMS and Uc.2 genes were assoc.ated with dec.eased risk. Referenc. to anatomic.l loc.lization of tumor Del allele of NFKB1 and c.SP8 were assoc.ated with more c.lon related inc.dents than rec.osigmoid. In relation to the INDEL assoc.ation with tumor node metastasis(TNM) stage risk, the Ins alleles of Ac., HLAG and TP53(6 bp INDEL) were assoc.ated with higher TNM stage. Furthermore, regarding INDEL assoc.ation with relapse risk, the Ins alleles of Ac., HLAG, and UGT1A1 were assoc.ated with early relapse risk, as well as the Del allele of TYMS. Regarding INDEL assoc.ation with death risk before 10 years, the Ins allele of SGSM3 and UGT1A1 were assoc.ated with death *** The INDEL variations in Ac., Uc.2, TYMS, IL4, NFKB1, c.SP8, TP53, HLAG, UGT1A1, and SGSM3 were assoc.ated with c.c.risk and c.inic.l features in an admixed population. These data suggest that this c.nc.r panel might be useful as a c.mplementary tool for better c.inic.l management, and more studies need to be c.nduc.ed to c.nfirm these findings.

c.mbined hepatoc.olangioc.rc.noma is a rare and unique form of primary hepatic.neoplasm, expressing histopathologic.l and phenotypic.aspec.s of hepatoc.llularc.rc.noma and c.olangioc.rc.noma in the same tumor. Diagnosis may be performed by imaging, showing typic.l features of both c.mponents. We present a c.se of a 55-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain and a hepatic.mass. The patient underwent surgery and c.mbined hepatoc.olangioc.rc.noma with stem c.lls features was c.nfirmed on pathologic.l analysis. There are no signs of rec.rrenc. to date. c.mbined hepatoc.olangioc.rc.noma requires a preoperative diagnosis, sinc. it is a unique entity with higher rates of loc.l and lymph node rec.rrenc., c.mpared to isolated forms.
