Mangroves perform essential functions in biological cycles and are protected by law in Brazil. However, they are being degraded above their support limit, leading to a reduction in the areas around the world. The area investigated in the present study is a potentially unpolluted mangrove ecosystem in the south of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The aim of this work was to investigate the presence of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove sediment and to correlate them with mutagenic and genotoxic activity. Four seasonal samplings undertaken between 2009 and 2010 at five sites were analyzed. Dichloromethane extracts were obtained under sonication and subjected to mutagenicity assays using Salmonella microsuspension. Metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb) contents were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry, while the quantification of PAHs was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. goniopsis cruentata hemocytes were used to assess potential genotoxic damage (Micronucleus assay). The absence of mutagenicity was observed for all samples using Salmonella typhimurium strains TA97, TA98, TA100 and TA102, in the absence and presence of an exogenous mammalian metabolizing system. Among the metals, Cd and Cu were detected in autumn at values exceeding the threshold effect level and below the probable effect level. Benzo[a] pyrene was detected at levels above the threshold at one site, where small effects could be observed in the biota. Significant differences in the micronucleated cells observed suggest DNA damage had been induced by the PAHs identified.

Experimental and numerical analysis of multi-chamber oscillating water column devices

A review of multi-chamber oscillating water column(OWC)device designs is *** significant variations of these devices are discussed,onshore OWC(OOWC)and a floating OWC(FOWC).The efficiency results of several theoretical studies based on low-and high-fidelity numerical models are presented and compared with the model scale ***,low-fidelity numerical models are very fast to run,but their accuracy is limited compared with high-fidelity numerical *** model experiments usually give results much more accurate than numerical models,but they need adequate facilities and are very *** the case of the OOWC,all models show a similar trend of total efficiency,but while the analytical model shows a maximum value of around 90%efficiency,the CFD model shows 60%,and the experiments only go up to 40%.The main reason is connected with the mathematical simplifications and assumptions that do not represent all the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic processes between the water,air,and *** the case of the FOWC,interestingly,the experimental results show a maximum efficiency of almost 100%,while the analytical model only predicts a maximum of 80%.The efficiency seems highly dependent on the heave motion resonance of the entire device,where the analytical model fails to predict this natural frequency.

Revisiting the theoretical prediction of the explosive performance found by the Trauzl test

The Trauzl lead block test allows the determination of the approximate performance of explosives in blasting applications by measuring the volume increase(expansion)that is produced by the detonation of an explosive charge in the cavity of a lead *** this paper,we reconsider the possibility of interpreting the Trauzl test results in terms of detonation parameters or *** detonation parameters used in the analysis are calculated using the thermochemical code EXPlO5,while the hydrocode AUTODYN is used to simulate the effect of explosive charge density and reaction rate on the results of the Trauzl *** increase in the volume of the lead block cavity was found to correlate best with the product of the detonation heat and the root of the volume of detonation *** simulation showed that the density of explosive charge and the rate of explosive decomposition affect the dynamics of the interaction of the detonation product and the lead block,and consequently the lead block cavity volume increase.

Research funding and citations in papers of Nobel laureates in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine, 2019-2020

Purpose:The goal of this study is a comparative analysis of the relation between funding(a main driver for scientific research)and citations in papers of Nobel laureates in physics,chemistry and medicine over 2019-2020 and the same relation in these research fields as a ***/methodology/approach:This study utilizes a power law model to explore the relationship between research funding and citations of related *** study here analyzes 3,539 recorded documents by Nobel laureates in physics,chemistry and medicine and a broader dataset of 183,016 documents related to the fields of physics,medicine,and chemistry recorded in the Web of Science ***:Results reveal that in chemistry and medicine,funded researches published in papers of Nobel laureates have higher citations than unfunded studies published in articles;vice versa high citations of Nobel laureates in physics are for unfunded studies published in ***,when overall data of publications and citations in physics,chemistry and medicine are analyzed,all papers based on funded researches show higher citations than unfunded ***/value:Results clarify the driving role of research funding for science diffusion that are systematized in general properties:a)articles concerning funded researches receive more citations than(un)funded studies published in papers of physics,chemistry and medicine sciences,generating a high Matthew effect(a higher growth of citations with the increase in the number of papers);b)research funding increases the citations of articles in fields oriented to applied research(e.g.,chemistry and medicine)more than fields oriented towards basic research(e.g.,physics).Practical implications:The results here explain some characteristics of scientific development and diffusion,highlighting the critical role of research funding in fostering citations and the expansion of scientific *** finding can support decision-making of policymakers and R&D mana

Effects of frothers on bubbles size and flotation performance of hydrophobic minerals

Frothers facilitate the reduction of bubbles size by preventing bubbles coalescence and produce more stable *** collision probability of the bubbles and particles substantially increases by decreasing bubble *** the same volume system,fewer bubbles result from a distribution of large-sized bubbles,and more bubbles result from a distribution of small-sized *** this research,fundamental two-phase frother characterization parameters were aimed to link with three-phase coal and talc flotation *** this purpose,the effect of single and dual frother systems on inhibiting bubble coalescence was investigated with methyl isobutyl carbinol(MIBC),isooctanol(2 ethyl hexanol),pine oil,and Dowfroth *** on the results of single frothers,isooctanol at the lowest critical coalescence concentration(CCC)value of 6×10^(−6) achieved the smallest bubbles with Sauter mean diameter of 0.80 *** blending Dowfroth 250 and pine oil,the bubbles size decreased significantly,reaching 0.45 *** the highest recoveries in coal flotation were obtained in single and frother blends where the bubbles size was measured as the smallest in two-phase system,and such a relationship was not found for talc flotation.

Combustion characteristics of low-quality lignite for different bed material sphericities in a circulating fluidized bed boiler:A numerical study

This study delves into the combustion behavior of various lignite types within a circulating fluidized bed boiler(CFBB),with a primary focus on the impact of different bed material sphericity ratios(0.5,0.7,and 0.9).Utilizing bed material with a sphericity ratio of 0.9 sourced from theÇan power plant and verified through experimentation,the research reveals several key ***,furnace temperatures tended to rise with higher sphericity ratios,albeit with variations between lignite types,particularly highlighting the complexity of this relationship in the case of glI-Tunçbilek *** levels in the combustion chamber remained consistent across different sphericity ratios,indicating minimal influence on pressure *** combustion efficiency,especially at the bottom of the boiler,was observed at lower sphericity levels(0.5 and 0.7)forÇan lignite,as reflected in CO_(2) mole *** NO_(x) emissions generally decreased with lower sphericity,the sensitivity to sphericity varied by lignite type,with Ilgın lignite showcasing low NO_(x) but high SO_(2) emissions,underscoring the intricate interplay between lignite properties,sphericity,and ***,this study advances our understanding of CFBB combustion dynamics,offering insights valuable for optimizing performance and emissions control,particularly in lignite-based power.

This article,we develop an optimal policy to control the service rate of a discrete time queueing-inventory system with finite *** customers arrive according to a Bernoulli process and the service time for the customers are *** the buffer size attains its maximum,any arriving new customers are considered to be *** customers are served one by one according to FCFS rule and each customers request random number of *** inventory is replenished according to a(s,Q)inventory policy with geometric lead *** main objectives of this article are to determine the service rates to be employed at each slot so that the long run expected cost rate is minimized for fixed inventory level and fixed buffer size and to minimize the expected waiting time for a fixed inventory level and fixed buffer *** problems are modelled as Markov decision *** establish the existence of a stationary policy and employ linear programming method to find the optimal service *** provide some numerical examples to illustrate the behaviour of the model.
