Diffusion of Solar Energy Use in the Built Environment Supported by New Design

Places of large potentials of sustainable energy production and places of large energy consumption are often very different and separated by large distances across the globe. This paper first discusses potentials of solar technology in terms of global availability using PV （photovoltaic） technology and actual energy production. Solar energy is widely under-used and one way to reduce this is to improve production in low-energy places with high demand： large cities. According to this option, about 40% of the electricity consumption in the built environment could be produced by solar PV systems and energy storage systems. This paper discusses conditions in the built environment and functional and design qualities enabling an increased diffusion of the technologies In a comparative analysis of PV technologies, the criteria taken into account encompass efficiency of the type of solar cell and commercial availability. Special attention is paid to the design features of different PV systems, like flexibility, colour and transparency that might help in their utilization as integrated in building material and ornaments in modem architecture. The same procedure is followed for electricity storage devices. The preliminary conclusion is that at present the freedom of design is largest for a combination of crystalline silicon PV cells and Li-ion batteries.

Validation of a novel imaging approach using multi-slice CT and cone-beam CT to follow-up on condylar remodeling after bimaxillary surgery

The main goal of this study was to introduce a novel three-dimensional procedure to objectively quantify both inner and outer condylar remodelling on preoperative multi-slice computed tomography （MSCT） and postoperative cone-beam computed tomography （CBCT） images. Second, the reliability and accuracy of this condylar volume quantification method was assessed. The mandibles of 20 patients （11 female and 9 male） who underwent bimaxillary surgery were semi-automatically extracted from MSCT/CBCT scans and rendered in 3D. The resulting condyles were spatially matched by using an anatomical landmark-based registration procedure. A standardized sphere was created around each condyle, and the condylar bone volume within this selected region of interest was automatically calculated. To investigate the reproducibility of the method, inter- and intra-observer reliability was calculated for assessments made by two experienced radiologists twice five months apart in a set of ten randomly selected patients. To test the accuracy of the bone segmentation, the inner and outer bone structures of one dry mandible, scanned according to the clinical set-up, were compared with the gold standard, micro-CT. Thirty-eight condyles showed a significant （P〈O.05） mean bone volume decrease of 26.4%_ 11.4% （502.9 mm3＋ 268.1 mm3）. No significant effects of side, sex or age were found. Good to excellent （ICC〉 0.6） intra- and inter-observer reliability was observed for both MSCT and CBCT. Moreover, the bone segmentation accuracy was less than one voxel （0.4 mm） for MSCT （0.3 mm __. 0.2 mm） and CBCT （0.4 mm _ 0.3 mm）, thus indicating the clinical potential of this method for objective follow-up in pathological condylar resorption.

Investigation of Different Pre-Treated Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Raman Spectroscopy

Raman spectroscopy is a common method of studying carbon-based materials such as multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). However, the analysis of this technique is non-trivial since recorded spectra may be a convolution of both molecular vibrations and phonon resonances. The energies of these physical processes may occur in the same energy regime, and hence several analytical approaches can be necessary for a full analysis. Due to the negligible quantities of non-graphitic carbon in MWCNT, the present fitting procedure focuses on understanding phonon resonances to elucidate how varying modifications of MWCNT ultimately influence their graphitic bulk structure. We have found this approach to provide greater insight into the structure of MWCNT when low quantities of amorphous carbon are present, when compared with methods which try to interpret both phonon scattering and molecular vibrations simultaneously. Different pre-treatments for the modification of the graphitic structure of MWCNT are compared, including aqueous acidic and gas phase methods, and statistically evaluated. Focusing on phonon resonances enables one to analyze the reaction process of nitrosulfuric acid pre-treatment at different temperatures. Thereby, it is possible to control the ratio between defects and graphitic structures in MWCNT samples and prepare samples with reproducible D/G ratios.

We demonstrate monolithically integrated n-GaAs/p-Si depletion-type optical phase shifters fabricated on a 300 mm wafer-scale Si photonics *** measured the phase shifter performance using Mach–Zehnder modulators with the GaAs/Si optical phase shifters in both arms.A modulation efficiency of V_(π)L as low as 0.3 V·cm has been achieved,which is much lower compared to a carrier-depletion type Si optical phase shifter with pn *** propagation loss is relatively high at.5 d B∕mm,the modulator length can be reduced by the factor of.2 for the same optical modulation amplitude of a Si reference Mach–Zehnder modulator,owing to the high modulation efficiency of the shifters.

Can I-124 PET/CT Predict Pathological Uptake of Therapeutic Dosages of Radioiodine (I-131) in Differentiated Thyroid Carcinoma?

Introduction: The aim of the study was to assess the role of I-124 PET/CT in the prediction of uptake of a therapeutic dosage I-131 during follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Methods: The results of 34 I-124 PET/CT scans performed in our hospital between 2007 and 2012 were retrospectively evaluated. All scans were made in patients under follow up, replacing the diagnostic I-131 or I-123 scintigraphy. In all cases thyroglobulin (Tg) was stimulated (by recombinant thyroid stimulating hormone (rhTSH) or thyroid hormone withdrawal). A dosage of 40 MBq I-124 was used, with scans at 24 hours and 96 hours after administration. Results were compared to subsequent I-131 post-treatment scans (6 cases) and a combination of follow up, stimulated Tg and other imaging tools results available to assess presence of recurrence. Results: Recurrence of DTC was found in 14/34 cases. I-124 PET/CT correctly detected recurrence in 2 cases, with false negative results in 12 cases. In 1 case a false positive I-124 PET/CT result was recorded. 19 true negative results were found. For I-124 PET/CT this meant a sensitivity of 14% and a specificity of 95%. Positive predictive value was 67%, negative predictive value 61%. Post-treatment I-131 uptake (6 cases) was correctly predicted in 1 case, with false negative results in 4 cases and 1 true negative result. Conclusions: In this study I-124 PET/CT did not reliably detect recurrent differentiated thyroid carcinoma. More importantly it failed to predict I-131 uptake on post-treatment scintigraphy in a significant number of cases, which would lead to under-treatment.
