Membranes undergo recovery upon rehydration in seed germination. Previous work has described that the plasma membrane H＋-ATPase from maize embryos adopts two different forms at 0 and 5 h of imbibition. We investigated how the kinetics of these two forms could be affected by alterations in the plasma membrane （PM）. In comparison to the O-h, PMs from the 5-h imbibed embryos showed changes in glycerophospholipid composition, decrease in leakage, and increase in fluidity. Kinetics of the PM H^-ATPase from 0 and 5-h imbibed embryos showed negative cooperativity, With the removal of the membrane environment, the activity of the enzymes shifted to a more complex kinetics, displaying two enzyme components. Lipid reconstitution produced one component with positive cooperativity. In all cases, enzymes from 0 and 5-h imbibed embryos presented similar kinetics with some quantitative differences. These results indicate that the two enzyme forms have the potential ability to respond to changes in the membrane enyiror^rpent, but the fact that they do not show differences in the native membranes at 0 or 5 h implies that modifications in the membrane are not drastic enough to alter their kinetics, or that they are able to preserve their boundary lipids or associated proteins and thus retain the same kinetic behavior.

This article aims to analyze cities located in the high mountain ecosystems formed by the landscape of Andenes or sustainable infrastructure of terraces located in the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andean highlands of central South America. The selected case studies have in common the use of land for settlement purposes, and the fact that they pursue both urban and rural infrastructure sustainability approaches. Theoretical and empirical methods were used such as the historical-logical method, the inductive-deductive method, observation in situ and reviews of documents and maps. It is concluded that the anthropic interventions and the management and monitoring plans of each site allow for the conservation of their natural resources and of the landscape of Andenes, the improvement of the population’s quality of life, the control of structural risk to prevent erosion of the mountains where they are constructed as well as the preservation of the site’s globally significant cultural heritage (as recognised by UNESCO). Current trends in the sustainable use of cultural and natural resources of the heritage involve the conservation of terraced landscapes. Without their preservation, management or exploitation as a tourist resource cannot be carried out.

Egg rejection is the most effective and widespread defense used by host species to counteract the extreme fitness costs frequently imposed by obligate avian brood ***,the proximate mechanisms underlying between-and within-individual variation in host responses remain poorly *** evidence suggests that egg rejection is dependent on individual physiological states,and draws attention to the role of hormones as mediators of flexible antiparasitic *** this perspective article,I outline recent advances in our understanding of the proximate factors that mediate egg rejection.I also point out some areas where knowledge remains still lacking,especially those related to the development and maintenance of effective cognitive functions,the potential role of oxidative stress,immunological state,and developmental stressors.I propose new hypotheses that stimulate future research on behavioral host responses toward brood parasitism.

Objective: This review aims to describe the role of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in the pathogenesis of bulimia nervosa (BN), the perpetuation of this illness and the possibility of its use as a target for future therapeutic advances. Methods: Search for cholecystokinin AND bulimia nervosa in Pubmed Central, with no limits, identified 38 articles published up to the present date. Results: It is well established that CCK is altered in the pathogenesis of BN, and that its main role is in the perpetuation of the disorder rather than the cause of it. Discussion: Additional studies will be needed to further understand the mechanisms by which CCK regulates orexigenic pathways. If an orally active, longer acting analogue of CCK could be developed, it would be of significant interest as an appetite suppressant and a key adjuvant in the treatment of patients suffering from BN, particularly in refractory cases.

Although the combination of alcohol and sex is frequently observed in human social interaction, many questions concerning alcohol’s effects on the processing of sexual stimuli and brain functionality remain unanswered. Erotic films eliciting sexual arousal in humans and affect electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. This study examines the effects of alcohol on cortical EEG activity in young men while viewing an erotic film. Heterosexual males participated in an independent alcohol/placebo group protocol. Thirty-five minutes after beverage ingestion, EEGs were recorded at prefrontal, temporal and parietal derivations in three conditions: baseline, and while watching erotic and neutral films. During the observation of erotic films, only the participants who drank the placebo beverage showed a decrease in alpha1 and an increase in the fast frequencies of the prefrontal regions, as well as a decrease in inter-prefrontal synchronization in the alpha and beta bands. Alcohol suppressed the prefrontal EEG changes associated with watching erotic visual stimuli without affect the sexual arousal. EEG data show that alcohol affecting the functioning of the prefrontal cortex, which could interfere with the adequate processing of visual erotic stimuli. These findings may contribute to improving our understanding of the brain mechanisms that underlie alcohol’s effects on the processing of sexual stimuli.

Thoracic Unilateral Spinal Cord Syndrome Following Neuraxial Anaesthesia for Periprosthetic Knee Fracture: A Case Report

Neuraxial anaesthesia is widely used in surgical procedures;overall, epidural and intrathecal techniques. Nevertheless, several outcomes should be considered. The incidence of neurologic complications after neuraxial anaesthesia is not perfectly clear (0% - 0.08%), although there are several described cases of spinal cord ischemia. We present a case of thoracic unilateral spinal cord syndrome following lumbar spinal anaesthesia for periprosthetic knee fracture. Our patient suffered monoparesis in her left lower limb as well as decreasing of muscle strength and loss of tendon reflexes. The MNR showed left hyperintense intra-cord images from T7 to T12 attributed to spinal cord oedema and a lineal hypointensity related to minimal haematic component. What made this case surprising was the fact that spinal anaesthesia was performed between L3 and L4 and the patient did not suffer paraesthesia associated with local anaesthetic injection. She was treated with glucocorticoids, gabapentin and amitriptyline. She also was checked by physical rehabilitators, neurologists and Pain Unit physicians. We have found another case reported in the literature about thoracic cord injury after lumbar spinal puncture. In this paper, we report possible aetiologies according to a review and neurological evolution of the patient seven months later.

The constant need for high-strength materials in the construction industry promotes the research of additives that improve the properties of masonry materials. The use of allophane as an additive in concrete and mortar mixtures was implemented to improve their strength and waterproofing, respectively, using compression and water absorption tests according to their corresponding standards (ASTM C1231, ASTM D2938, and ASTM C1585). The samples were evaluated at different concentrations and curing ages. In addition, different sand/cement ratios were considered for the mortar. The results revealed that there was a 9.4% increase in compressive strength in concrete and a 23.7% reduction in water absorption in mortar for the 5:1 ratio. These changes would be the result of the interaction of the nanoporous additive in the atomic crystal structure of the material demonstrating the nanotechnological nature of allophane.

Interchangeability of corneal curvature and asphericity measurements provided by three different devices

AIM: To evaluate the interchangeability of keratometric and asphericity measurements provided by three measurement systems based on different optical ***: A total of 40 eyes of 40 patients with a mean age of 34.1 y were included. In all cases, a corneal curvature analysis was performed with IOL-Master(IOLM), iDesign 2(ID2), and Sirius systems(SIR). Differences between instruments for flattest(K1) and steepest(K2) keratometric readings, as well as for magnitude and axis of corneal astigmatism were analyzed. Likewise, differences in asphericity(Q) between SIR and ID2 were also evaluated. RESULTS: Mean differences between devices for K1 were 0.20±0.21(P<0.001),-0.12±0.36(P=0.046) and-0.32±0.36 D(P<0.001) for the comparisons IOLM-SIR, IOLM-ID2 and SIR-ID2, respectively. The ranges of agreement for these comparisons between instruments were 0.41, 0.70, and 0.70 D. For K2, mean differences were 0.31±0.33(P<0.001),-0.08±0.43(P=0.265) and-0.39±0.38 D(P<0.001), with ranges of agreement of 0.65, 0.84, and 0.74 D. Concerning magnitude of astigmatism, ranges of agreement were in the limit of clinical relevance(0.49 D, P=0.011; 0.55 D, P=0.386; 0.43 D, P=0.05). In contrast, ranges of agreement were clinically relevant for astigmatic axis(26.68o, 33.83o and 18.37o, P≥0.121) and for Q between SIR and ID2(0.16, P<0.001). CONCLUSION: The keratometric corneal power, astigmatic axis and asphericity measurements provideby the three systems evaluated cannot be considered as interchangeable, whereas measurements of corneal astigmatism obtained with SIR and ID2 can be considered as interchangeable for clinical purposes.

AIM To investigated the real-world effectiveness and safety of various regimens of interferon-free treatments in patients infected with hepatitis C virus(HCV).METHODS We performed an observational study to analyze different antiviral treatments administered to 462 HCV-infected patients, of which 56.7% had liver cirrhosis. HCV RNA after 4 wk of treatment and at 12 wk after treatment sustained virologic response(SVR) as well as serious adverse events(SAEs) was analyzed first for the whole cohort and then separately in patients who met or did not meet the inclusion criteria of a clinical trial(CT-met and CT-unmet, respectively).RESULTS The most frequently prescribed treatment was simeprevir/sofosbuvir(36.4%), followed by sofosbuvir/ledipasvir(24.9%) and ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir(r)/dasabuvir(19.9%). Ribavirin(RBV) was administered in 198 patients(42.9%). SVRs occurred in 437/462 patients(94.6%). The SVRs ranged between 93.3% and 100% for genotypes 1-4. SVRs were achieved in 96.2% patients in the CTmet group vs 91.9% patients in the CT-unmet group(P = 0.049). Undetectable HCV RNA at week 4 occurred in 72.9% of the patients. In the univariate analysis, the factors associated with SVRs were lower liver stiffness, absence of cirrhosis, higher platelet count, higher albumin levels, no RBV dose reduction, undetectable HCV RNA at week 4 and CT-met group. In the multivariate analysis, only albumin was an independent predictor of treatment failure(P = 0.04). Eleven patients(2.4%) developed SAEs; 5.2% and 0.7% of the patients in the CT-unmet and CT-met groups, respectively(P = 0.003).CONCLUSION A high proportion of patients with HCV infection achieved SVRs. For patients who did not meet the CT criteria, treatment regimens must be optimized.
