The methods of preparation, conservation and sale of Garba, the traditional Ivorian street meal, abundantly consumed in Côte d’Ivoire, can be exposed to various infections resulting in the poisoning of consumers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hygienic quality of Garba through the analysis and the determination of certain toxic chemicals. In three hundred (300) samples of Garba collected in four districts in Abidjan, toxic metals (cadmium, mercury, lead), biogenic amine (histamine) and mycotoxins (aflatoxins and ochratoxin A) were detected and quantified using official standardized methods. Different toxics analyzed were present at various levels in the Garba. The mercury, lead, cadmium and histamine levels in the Garba were respectively 0.19 mg/kg, 0.19 mg/kg, 0.03 mg/kg and 32.69 mg/kg. The detected mycotoxins included aflatoxins b1, b2, G1, G2 and ochratoxin A, with respective average proportions of 3.44 μg/kg, 1.90 μg/kg, 8.07 μg/kg, 0.56 μg/kg and 0.42 μg/kg. The mycotoxins levels in the Garba are higher than the recommended toxic levels, particularly the ones in aflatoxin b1 and G1. This suggests a sanitary risk associated with the consumption of this meal. Consequently, awareness campaigns and training of the Garba sellers in hygiene and a better regulation of this sector by the competent authorities are required.

Purpose: Magnetic hyperthermia treatment (MHT) is a strategy for cancer therapy using the tem-perature rise of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) under an alternating magnetic field (AMF). Re-cently, a new imaging method called magnetic particle imaging (MPI) has been introduced. MPI allows imaging of the spatial distribution of MNPs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of visualizing and quantifying the intratumoral distribution and temporal change of MNPs and predicting the therapeutic effect of MHT using MPI. Materials and Methods: Colon-26 cells (1 × 106 cells) were implanted into the backs of eight-week-old male bALb/c mice. When the tumor volume reached approximately 100 mm3, mice were divided into untreated (n = 10) and treated groups (n = 27). The tumors in the treated group were directly injected with MNPs (Resovist?) with iron concentrations of 500 mM (A, n = 9), 400 mM (b, n = 8), and 250 mM (C, n = 10), respectively, and MHT was performed using an AMF with a frequency of 600 kHz and a peak amplitude of 3.5 kA/m. The mice in the treated group were scanned using our MPI scanner immediately before, immediately after, 7 days, and 14 days after MHT. We drew a region of interest (ROI) on the tumor in the MPI image and calculated the average, maximum, and total MPI values and the number of pixels by taking the threshold value for extracting the contour as 40% of the maximum MPI value (pixel value) within the ROI. These parameters in the untreated group were taken as zero. We also measured the relative tumor volume growth (RTVG) defined by (V-V0)/V0, where V0 and V are the tumor volumes immediately before and after MHT, respectively. Results: The average, maximum, and total MPI values decreased up to 7 days after MHT and remained almost constant thereafter in all groups, whereas the number of pixels tended to increase with time. This study investigated the acute effects of green tea extract （GTE） and its polyphenol constituents, （-）-epigallocatechin-3-gallate （EGCG） and （-）-epicatechin （EC）, on basal and stimulated testosterone production by rat Leydig cells in vitro. Leydig cells purified in a Percoll gradient were incubated for 3 h with GTE, EGCG or EC and the testosterone precursor androstenedione, in the presence or absence of either protein kinase A （PKA） or protein kinase C （PKC） activators. The reversibility of the effect was studied by pretreating cells for 15 min with GTE or EGCG, allowing them to recover for 1 h and challenging them for 2 h with human chorionic gonadotropin （hCG）, luteinizing hormone releasing hormone （LHRH）, 22（R）-hydroxycholesterol or androstenedione. GTE and EGCG, but not EC, inhibited both basal and kinase-stimulated testosterone production. Under the pretreatment conditions, the inhibitory effect of the higher concentration of GTE/EGCG on hCG/LHRH-stimulated or 22（R）- hydroxycholesterol-induced testosterone production was maintained, whereas androstenedione-supported testosterone production returned to control levels. At the lower concentration of GTE/EGCG, the inhibitory effect of these polyphenols on 22（R）-hydroxycholesterol-supported testosterone production was reversed. The inhibitory effects of GTE may be explained by the action of its principal component, EGCG, and the presence of a gallate group in its structure seems important for its high efficacy in inhibiting testosterone production. The mechanisms underlying the effects of GTE and EGCG involve the inhibition of the PKA/PKC signalling pathways, as well as the inhibition of P450 side-chain cleavage enzyme and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase function.

AIM： To evaluate the impact of therapeutic education on adherence to antiviral treatment and sustained virological response （SVR） in a real-life setting in genotype 2/3 hepatitis C, as there are few adherence data in genotype 2/3 infection, even from randomized trials. METHODS： This prospective survey included genotype 2/3 patients who received peg-interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin. There was no intervention. Adherence wasself-reported over the past 4 wk （peg-interferon） or 7 d （ribavirin）. Adherence to bitherapy was defined as adherence to the two drugs for ≥ 20 wk. SVR was defined as undetectable RNA ≥ 12 wk after the end of treatment. RESULTS： 370/674 patients received education during the first 3 mo of treatment. After 6 too, adherence to bitherapy was higher in educated patients （61% vs 47%, P = 0.01）. Adherence to peg-interferon was 78% vs 69% （P=0.06）. Adherence to ribavirin was 70% vs 56% （P = 0.006）. The SVR （77% vs 70%, P = 0.05） and relapse （10% vs 16%, P = 0.09） rates tended to be improved. After adjustment for baseline differences, education improved adherence [Odds ratio （OR） 1.58, P = 0.04] but not the SVR （OR 1.54, P = 0.06）. CONCLUSION： In genotype 2/3 patients, therapeutic education helped maintain real-life adherence to bitherapy.

The semi-arid mangroves of the Gulf of Kachchh,the largest ecosystems on the west coast of India,are poorly studied in terms of vegetation structure and environmental parameters in spite of their conservation ***,it is necessary to document the structural features of these mangroves in view of ongoing coastal industrial *** forest structure in 10 locations on the northern and southern coasts of the Gulf of Kachchh were assessed using the line intercept transect *** included density of young and mature age classes,tree heights,diameters at breast height(DbH)and aboveground biomass,along with seven significant environmental *** tree densities ranged from 350 to 1567 ***-1,while average height and girth at breast height ranged from 1.0 to 6.8 m and 3.0 to 137.0 cm,*** majority of trees(55.6%)were in b 1.8 m height class followed by a 1.9 to 2.4 m class(25.1%).DbH was most often in class 2 cm or lower than *** the canopy index classes,more trees were recorded in class ≤2 *** regeneration density was greater than the recruitment *** study indicates that the poor structural attributes of Avicennia marina *** Stapf and Mold dominated mangroves are largely due to aridity induced by scarce and erratic rainfall and high soil and water *** results should be valuable in conserving and sustainably managing these mangroves in the face of developmental activities.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive disease and affects approximately 10% of the population. The major late pathologic feature of CKD is interstitial fibrosis in the kidney characterized by extracellular matrix deposition but in early stage, several profibrotic and proinflammatory cytokines as well as growth factors are expressed. The renin-angiotensin and ET systems both play an important role in the pathogenesis of CKD and the blockade of these systems has been shown to suppress proinflammatory cytokines and to arrest the progression of CKD. We have demonstrated earlier also the renoprotective effect of physical activity on the experimental CKD progression (Pechter et al., 2003). Aim of the study was to investigate the effects of non-drug treatment, physical activity, to the extent of gene expression in experimental CKD and to compare with endothelin receptor blocker (ERb, sitaxentan) and standard nephroprotective drug, angiotensin receptor blocker (ARb, losartan) treatments. Expression of mRNA was assessed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. CCL2/MCP-1 and nuclear factor-κb (NFκb) gene expression was measured in whole kidneys. Results revealed that CCL2/MCP-1 gene expression (data presented in poster presentation ASN Renal Week 2010, Pechter et al.) was increased in the 5/6 NPX rat kidneys, and the increase was lessened significantly after physical activity and losartan therapy. ERb treatment appeared less effective. Combined ARb and ERb treatment as well as drugs alone or physical therapy prevented the increase in systemic blood pressure, albuminuria and CCL2/MCP-1 as well as NFκb gene expression. We conclude that non-drug and drug treatments both were effective regarding the rate of the progression of experimental CKD measured by physiological and molecular biomarkers of chronic inflammation in kidney tissue.
