The objective of this current study is to compare related sediment legislation standards and norms to the diversity and influence of anthropogenic and natural(geogenic) sources of pollution in the investigated fluvial relief test site region of the Obedska *** metals(nickel(Ni).zinc(Zn),cadmium(Cd),copper(Cu) and lead(Pb) except chromium(Cr)) and arsenic(As) have higher values than the Upper Continental Crust(UCC) for loess *** sharp leaps in the enrichment factor(r) suggested "indicators of anthropogenic metal pollution" for Cd,Cu(r> 5.0) and Zn,Ni(r> 1.0) for this *** addition,the Chemical Proxy of Alteration(CPA,60-95) from the unique Jadar block terrane and neighbouring representative catchment areas,confirmed moderate to higher intensity of *** Component Analysis/Factor Analysis(PCA/FA) and cluster analysis suggest that Ni,Zn,Cu and Cd are derived from several anthropogenic sources,whereas As is convincingly of geogenic origin,and Pb and Cr exhibit dual *** sum of 16 *** Protection Agency Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(EPA PAHs) indicated heterogenic sources,but minor effects to *** results of the current investigation indicated intensive and highly diffuse sources of pollution in this United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO's] *** outcomes indicate that Cu should be added to the European Union [EU] watch list of emerging contaminants.

The purpose of the current study is to compare the influence of different aerobic conditions(biostimulation(BS), bioaugmentation(BA), and a combination of biostimulation and bioaugmentation(BB))on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAH) degradation and compare the degraded amount with single step XAD-4 extraction as a new tool for bioavailability assessment for chronically contaminated sediment samples obtained from territory of Autonomous Province Vojvodina of Serbia(S1, S2, and S3). A great number of papers dealing with biodegradation of PAHs in spiked sediment or soil have been published,but to the authors' knowledge, a limited number of papers studied aged, historically polluted sediment and a sum of chosen U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(USEPA) PAHs. A significant reduction(up to67%) in PAH concentration was observed, while the percentage of reduction varied depending on the sediment sample and treatment used. BS treatment successfully stimulated growth of indigenous bacteria. Further, PAH-degrading strain Sphingomonas paucimobilis F8 inoculated in BA and BB treatment survived for up to 7 weeks after it was suppressed by unfavorable conditions or native *** amounts generally showed good correlation with results obtained from XAD-4 *** obtained in the current study represent a good start for standardizing a XAD-4 extraction technique as a simplified, easier, and lower cost method for bioavailability assessment.

Globally,marine bioinvasions threaten marine ecosystem structure and function,with the Mediterranean Sea being one of the most affected *** invasions are expected to increase due to climate *** conducted a risk screening of marine organisms(37 fishes,38 invertebrates,and 9 plants),both extant and‘horizon’(i.e.,not present in the area but likely to enter it).Based on expert knowledge for the Eastern Adriatic Sea coasts of Slovenia,Croatia,and Montenegro,screenings were conducted under both current and predicted climate conditions indicating with an increase in sea surface temperature and salinity of the Adriatic Sea together with changes in precipitation *** aims were to:(1)identify non-native extant and horizon marine species that may pose threats to native biodiversity and(2)evaluate the risk of invasiveness of the selected species under current and predicted climate *** the 84 species screened,there was an increase in those ranked as‘high risk’from 33(39.3%)under current climate conditions and to 47(56.0%)under global warming *** those ranked as‘very high’risk,the increase was from 6(7.1%)to 21(25.0%).Amongst the screened species,the already established high-risk species Pacific oyster Magallana gigas and Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus represent a threat to ecosystem *** the under-representation of marine species in the current European Union List,the species we have ranked as high to very high risk should be included.

Attaining and maintaining good glycemic control is a cornerstone of diabetes care. The monitoring of glycemic control is currently based on the self-monitoring of blood glucose(SMBG) and laboratory testing for hemoglobin A1 c(HbA1 c),which is a surrogate biochemical marker of the average glycemia level over the previous 2-3 mo period. Although hyperglycemia is a key biochemical feature of diabetes, both the level of and exposure to high glucose, as well as glycemic variability, contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic complications and follow different patterns in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. HbA1 c provides a valuable,standardized and evidence-based parameter that is relevant for clinical decision making, but several biological and analytical confounders limit its accuracy in reflecting true glycemia. It has become apparent in recent years that other glycated proteins such as fructosamine, glycated albumin, and the nutritional monosaccharide 1,5-anhydroglucitol, as well as integrated measures from direct glucose testing by an SMBG/continuous glucose monitoring system, may provide valuable complementary data, particularly in circumstances when HbA1 c results may be unreliable or are insufficient to assess the risk of adverse outcomes. Long-term associations of these alternative biomarkers of glycemia with the risk of complications need to be investigated in order to provide clinically relevant cut-off values and to validate their utility in diverse populations of diabetes patients.

Objective: Despite recent advancements in targeted therapy and immunotherapies, prognosis for metastatic melanoma patients remains extremely poor. Development of resistance to previously effective treatments presents a serious challenge and new approaches for melanoma treatment are urgently needed. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of telmisartan, an AGTR1 inhibitor and a partial agonist of PPARγ, on melanoma cells as a potential agent for repurposing in melanoma ***: Expression of AGTR1 and PPARγ m RNA in melanoma patient tumor samples was examined in publicly available datasets and confirmed in melanoma cell lines by qRT-PCR. A panel of melanoma cell lines was tested in viability, apoptosis and metabolic assays in presence of telmisartan by flow cytometry and immunocytochemistry. A cytotoxic effect of combinations of telmisartan and targeted therapy vemurafenib was examined using the Chou-Talalay combination index ***: Both AGTR1 and PPARγ mRNA were expressed in melanoma patient tumor samples and decreased compared to the expression in the healthy skin. In vitro, we found that telmisartan decreased melanoma cell viability by inducing cell *** glucose uptake, but not utilization, in the presence of telmisartan caused the fission of mitochondria and release of reactive oxygen species. Telmisartan altered the cell bioenergetics, thereby synergizing with vemurafenib in vitro, and even sensitized vemurafenib-resistant cells to the ***: Given that the effective doses of telmisartan examined in our study can be administered to patients and that telmisartan is a widely used and safe antihypertensive drug, our findings provide the scientific rationale for testing its efficacy in treatment of melanoma progression.

Impact of creatinine methodology on glomerular filtration rate estimation in diabetes

AIM To evaluate the influence of creatinine methodology on the performance of chronic kidney disease(CKD)-Epidemiology Collaboration Group-calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate(CKD-EPI-eGFR) for CKD diagnosis/staging in a large cohort of diabetic patients. METHODS Fasting blood samples were taken from diabetic patients attending our clinic for their regular annual examination, including laboratory measurement of serum creatinine and *** Our results indicated an overall excellent agreement in CKD staging(kappa = 0.918) between the Jaffé serum creatinine-and enzymatic serum creatinine-based CKDEPI-eGFR, with 9% of discordant cases. As compared to the enzymatic creatinine, the majority of discordances(8%) were positive, i.e., associated with the more advanced CKD stage re-classification, whereas only 1% of cases were negatively discordant if Jaffé creatinine was used for eGFR calculation. A minor proportion of the discordant cases(3.5%) were re-classified into clinically relevant CKD stage indicating mildly to moderately decreased kidney function(< 60 m L/min per 1.73 m^2). Significant acute and chronic hyperglycaemia, assessedas plasma glucose and Hb A1 c levels far above the recommended glycaemic goals, was associated with positively discordant cases. Due to a very low frequency, positive discordance is not likely to present a great burden for the health-care providers, while intensified medical care may actually be beneficial for the small number of discordant patients. On the other hand, a very low proportion of negatively discordant cases(1%) at the 60 m L/min per 1.73 m^2 eGFR level indicate a negligible possibility to miss the CKD diagnosis, which could be the most prominent clinical problem affecting patient care, considering high risk of CKD for adverse patient outcomes. CONCLUSION This study indicate that compensated Jaffé creatinine procedure, in spite of the glucose-dependent bias, is not inferior to enzymatic creatinine in CKD diagnosis/
