Seasonal Evolution of the Rhizosphere Effect on Major and Trace Elements in Soil Solutions of Norway Spruce (<i>Picea abies Karst</i>) and Beech (<i>Fagus sylvatica</i>) in an Acidic Forest Soil

In low-nutrient ecosystems such as forests developed on acidic soil, the main limiting factor for plant growth is the availability of soil nutrients. The aim of this study was to investigate in a temperate forest: 1) the influence of the rhizosphere processes on the availability of nutrients and trace elements during one year period and 2) the seasonal evolution of this rhizosphere effect. Bulk soil and rhizosphere were collected in organo-mineral and mineral horizons of an acidic soil during autumn, winter, and spring under Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst) and beech (Fagus sylvatica). Soil solutions were extracted by soil centrifugation. Rhizosphere solutions were enriched in K, and in Ca, Mg, and Na (principally in spring) compared to those of the bulk soil. Our study reveals seasonal variations of the rhizosphere effect for Ca, Mg, and Na under both species, i.e., higher enrichment of the rhizosphere solution in spring as compared with that in autumn and winter. An enrichment of the rhizosphere solutions was also observed for trace elements regardless of the season under both species in the mineral horizon, only. In contrast, seasonal variations of the rhizosphere effect for the trace elements were observed in the solutions of the organomineral horizon under beech, i.e., enrichment in autumn and depletion in winter. This study demonstrates that rhizosphere biological activities significantly increase nutrient bioavailability during the growth period. These complex interactions between roots, microbial communities and soils are a key-process that supports tree nutrition in nutrient-poor forest soils. This research also reveals that rhizosphere processes a) occur throughout the year, even in winter, and b) influence differently the dynamics of nutrients and trace elements in the root vicinity of the organo-mineral horizon.

There is a need to develop interventions to slow or reverse the degeneration of dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease after *** that preclinical and clinical studies suggest benefits of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as docosahexaenoic acid,and exercise in Parkinson’s disease,we investigated whether both could synergistically interact to induce recovery of the dopaminergic ***,mice received a unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the striatum to establish an animal model of nigrostriatal *** weeks after lesion,animals were fed a docosahexaenoic acid-enriched or a control diet for the next 8 *** this period,the animals had access to a running wheel,which they could use or *** acid treatment,voluntary exercise,or the combination of both had no effect on(i)distance traveled in the open field test,(ii)the percentage of contraversive rotations in the apomorphine-induction test or(iii)the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars ***,the docosahexaenoic acid diet increased the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive terminals and induced a rise in dopamine concentrations in the lesioned *** to docosahexaenoic acid treatment or exercise alone,the combination of docosahexaenoic acid and exercise(i)improved forelimb balance in the stepping test,(ii)decreased the striatal DOPAC/dopamine ratio and(iii)led to increased dopamine transporter levels in the lesioned *** present results suggest that the combination of exercise and docosahexaenoic acid may act synergistically in the striatum of mice with a unilateral lesion of the dopaminergic system and provide support for clinical trials combining nutrition and physical exercise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Reactivation of latent tuberculosis with TNF inhibitors: critical role of the beta 2 chain of the IL-12 receptor

Tumor necrosis factor(TNF)inhibitors have improved a lot the treatment of numerous diseases,with the well-known example of rheumatoid arthritis(RA).In the early 2000s,postmarketing data quickly revealed an alarming number of severe tuberculosis(TB)under such *** findings were consistent with previous results in mice where TNF is essential for lymph node formation and granuloma *** effects of TNF inhibition on RA synovium structure are very similar to those on granuloma,with changes in cellular interactions,cytokine,and chemokine *** addition to the role of TNF in granuloma,the interleukin(IL)-12/interferon(IFN)-γpathway is required for an efficient host defense against *** and secondary immunodeficiencies affecting this pathway lead to severe bacillus Calmette-Guérin(BCG)reaction or full *** chronic inflammation as in RA induces a systemic Th1 defect that predisposes to TB through specific downregulation of the IL-12Rß2 *** TNF inhibitors are initiated,this transiently increases this risk of TB,through effects on cellular interactions in a latent TB *** a later stage,when a better control disease activity is obtained,the risk of TB is reduced but not *** the clear benefit from TNF inhibition,latent TB infection screening at baseline is essential for an optimal safety.

The present work is concerned with the derivation of numerical methods to approximate the radiation dose in external beam *** address this issue,we consider a moment approximation of radiative transfer,closed by an entropy minimization *** model under consideration is governed by a system of hyperbolic equations in conservation form supplemented by source *** main difficulty coming from the numerical approximation of this system is an explicit space dependence in the flux ***,this dependence will be seen to be stiff and specific numerical strategiesmust be derived in order to obtain the needed accuracy.A first approach is developed considering the 1D case,where a judicious change of variables allows to eliminate the space dependence in the flux *** is not possible in *** therefore reinterpret the 1D scheme as a scheme on two meshes,and generalize this to 2D by alternating transformations between separate *** call this procedure projection *** numerical experiments,coming from medical physics,illustrate the potential applicability of the developed method.

After the microbiology based on Pasteur's method and polymerase chain reaction(PCR), the diagnosis company named Dendris has proposed a third-generation of diagnosis enabling the search of a broad range of pathogens with strong sensitivity and specificity. This extraordinary profile was possible thanks to the use of phosphorus dendrimers for which various techniques of deposition on a given support were investigated and described and analyzed in this report.

In-situ formation of Ni-Al intermetallics-coated graphite/Al composite in a cold-sprayed coating and its high temperature tribological behaviors

In this study, cold spraying（CS） was used to deposit a mixture of nickel-coated graphite and 40 vol.% Al powder（Ni-Gr/Al） on a steel substrate aiming to effectively preserve a certain volume fraction of graphite in the deposited Ni-Gr/Al composite coating. The microstructure of the as-sprayed coating and the effect of post-spray heat-treatment（PSHT） temperatures on the in-situ formation of Ni-Al intermetallic phases in coating were studied. The tribological behaviors of the as-sprayed coating and the PSHTed coating under 450？C were tested at 25？C, while the as-sprayed coating was tested at 450？C for *** a result, the Ni-Gr particles showed a homogenous distribution in the coating. The multilayer Ni-Al intermetallics-coated graphite/Al composite coating was achieved in situ after the PSHT of 450？C, where the graphite did decompose at 550？C leaving big pores in the coating. The coefficients of friction（COF）of the CSed coating and the PSHTed coating were measured at 450？C as well as 25？C, which showed a similar tendency, much higher than that of the CSed coating tested at 25？C. The lubrication phase（graphite） improved the formation of a graphite film during sliding friction and decreased the COF, while the hard Ni-Al intermetallic phases contributed to the increase of COF.

High-magnification observation of seminiferous tubules through the tunica albuginea by two-photon laser scanning microscopy

Testicular sperm extraction is widely used in the treatment of male infertility in cases of non-obstructive azoospermia. Identifying spermatogenetic foci within the testes is critical for testicular sperm extraction. Two-photon laser scanning microscopy （TPLSM） is an autofluorescence-based microscopy technique that allows observation at a cellular level in the depth of fresh living tissues and does not require any histological processing （fixation or staining）. The wavelengths previously used have shown no phototoxicity on sperm. We used TPLSM to detect spermatogenetic foci in fresh mouse testicular parenchyma without disrupting the tunica albuginea. Fresh surgically retrieved testes were observed using TPLSM within 1 h after extraction. Contralateral testes for each animal were observed using standard histology. Using TPLSM we were able to observe and measure the diameter of seminiferous tubules through the tunica albuginea, similar to the histological control. Structures within epithelial tubules were also observed, although their nature has yet to be identified. TPLSM is a real-time microscopy technique that could detect spermatogenetic foci.
