AIM:To investigate the impact of phosphatase and tensin homolog(Pten) in the specification of intestinal enteroendocrine ***:Using the Cre/loxP system,a mouse with conditional intestinal epithelial Pten deficiency was *** mutant mice and controls were sacrificed and small intestines collected for immunofluorescence and quantitative real-time polymerase chain *** was collected on 16 h fasted mice by cardiac ***-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure blood circulating ghrelin,somatostatin(SST) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide(GIP) ***:Results show an unexpected dual regulatory role for epithelial Pten signalling in the specification/differentiation of enteroendocrine cell subpopulations in the small *** data indicate that Pten positively regulates chromogranin A(CgA) expressing subpopulations,including cells expressing secretin,ghrelin,gastrin and cholecystokinin(CCK).In contrast,Pten negatively regulates the enteroendocrine subtype specification of non-expressing CgA cells such as GIP and SST expressing ***:The present results demonstrate that Pten signalling favours the enteroendocrine progenitor to specify into cells expressing CgA including those producing CCK,gastrin and ghrelin.

early Paleogene Arctic terrestrial ecosystems affected by the change of polar hydrology under global warming:Implications for modern climate change at high latitudes

Our understanding of both the role and impact of Arctic environmental changes under the current global warming climate is rather limited despite efforts of improved monitoring and wider assessment through remote sensing technology. Changes of Arctic ecosystems under early Paleogene warming climate provide an analogue to evaluate long-term responses of Arctic environmental alteration to global warming. This study reviews Arctic terrestrial ecosystems and their transformation under marked change of hydrological conditions during the warmest period in early Cenozoic, the Paleocene and eocene. We describe a new approach to quantitatively reconstruct high latitudinal paleohydrology using compound-specific hydrogen isotope analysis which applies empirically derived genus-specific hydrogen isotope fractionations to in situ biomolecules from fossil plants. We propose a moisture recycling model at the Arctic to explain the reconstructed hydrogen isotope signals of ancient high latitude precipitation during early Paleogene, which bears implications to the likely change of modern Arctic ecosystems under the projected accelerated global warming.

Sound scattering in dense granular media

The sound propagation in a dense granular medium is basically characterized by the ratio of wavelength to the grain size. Two types of wave transport are distinguished: one corresponds to coherent waves in the long wavelength limit, the other to short-wavelength scattered waves by the inhomogeneous contact force networks. These multiply scattered elastic waves are shown to exhibit a diffusive characteristics of transport over long distances of propagation. Determination of the transport mean free path l * and the inelastic absorption (Q-1) allows the inference of the structural properties of the material such as the heterogeneity and internal dissipation. The relevance of our experiments for seismological applications is discussed. Moreover, we apply the correlation technique of the configuration-specific sound scattering to monitoring the dynamic behaviour of the granular medium (irreversible rearrangements) under strong vibration, shearing and thermal cycling, respectively.

Using Tangent Boost along a Worldline and Its Associated Matrix in the Lie Algebra of the Lorentz Group

In order to generalize the relativistic notion of boost to the case of non inertial particles and to general relativity, we look closer into the definition of the Lie group of Lorentz matrices and its Lie algebra and we study how this group acts on the Minskowski space. We thus define the notion of tangent boost along a worldline. This very general notion gives a useful tool both in special relativity (for non inertial particles or/and for non rectilinear coordinates) and in general relativity. We also introduce a matrix of the Lie algebra which, together with the tangent boost, gives the whole dynamical description of the considered system (acceleration and Thomas rotation). After studying the properties of Lie algebra matrices and their reduced forms, we show that the Lie group of special Lorentz matrices has four one-parameter subgroups. These tools lead us to introduce the Thomas rotation in a quite general way. At the end of the paper, we present some examples using these tools and we consider the case of an electron rotating on a circular orbit around an atom nucleus. We then discuss the twin paradox and we show that when the one who made a journey into space in a high-speed rocket returns home, he is not only younger than the twin who stayed on earth but he is also disorientated because his gyroscope has turned with respect to earth referential frame.

Improvement of microwave emissivity parameterization of frozen Arctic soils using roughness measurements derived from photogrammetry

Soil emissivity of Arctic regions is a key parameter for assessing surface properties from microwave brightness temperature(Tb)*** in winter,frozen soil permittivity and roughness are two poorly characterized unknowns that must be ***,we show that after removing snow,the 3D soil roughness can be accurately inferred from in-situ photogrammetry using Structure from Motion(SfM).We focus on using SfM techniques to provide accurate roughness measurements and improve emissivity models parametrization of frozen arctic soil for microwave *** was performed from ground-based radiometric measurements at 19 and 37 GHz using three different soil emission models:the Wegmüller and Mätzler[1999,TGRS]model(Weg99),the Wang and Choudhury[1981,JGR]model(QNH),and a geometrical optics model(Geo Optics).Measured and simulated brightness temperatures over different tundra and rock sites in the Canadian High Arctic show that Weg99,parametrized with SfM-based roughness and optimized permittivity(1),yielded an RMSe of 3.1 K(R2=0.71)for all frequencies and *** SfM based approach allowed us to measure roughness with 0.1 mm accuracy at 55 locations of different land cover type using a digital camera and metal plates of know dimensions.

The History, ethnology and Social Importance of Mare＇s Milk Consumption in Central Asia

The purpose of this paper is to make available for occidental lecturers a kind of synthesis of the information we accumulated over more than twenty years about horse breeding in Central Asia. It is also a trans-disciplinary approach mostly based on French bibliography and personal experiences. We will give a new perspective on the early time history of horse breeding to introduce the current breeding of horses in herds in Central Asia. We will continue with the description of the diet of the nomads and the central place taken by mare＇s milk in their culture. This induced rituals but also some medical aspects. These latter can now be partly explained with current modem studies. We will finally discuss on the prospects of horse milk products in the new globalised world.

This paper addresses the problem of designing a classical observer extended to dynamical discrete-time systems with constant delays. The idea of two forms of state observers is presented to compensate fixed time-delay. Convergence conditions have been found to ensure the stability of the error dynamics and the related gains may be selected based on a set of linear matrix inequality （LMI）. The results show that the compensation-based state observer is much superior in dealing with time-delay in the case that the buffer permits us to transform the time-delay system into a fixed time-delay system. Simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed observation technique.
