Direct molecular-level near-field plasmon and temperature assessment in a single plasmonic hotspot

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(TERS)is currently widely recognized as an essential but still emergent technique for exploring the ***,our lack of comprehension of crucial parameters still limits its potential as a user-friendly analytical *** tip’s surface plasmon resonance,heating due to near-field temperature rise,and spatial resolution are undoubtedly three challenging experimental parameters to ***,they are also the most fundamentally relevant parameters to explore,because they ultimately influence the state of the investigated molecule and consequently the probed *** we propose a straightforward and purely experimental method to access quantitative information of the plasmon resonance and near-field temperature experienced exclusively by the molecules directly contributing to the TERS *** detailed near-field optical response,both at the molecular level and as a function of time,is evaluated using standard TERS experimental equipment by simultaneously probing the Stokes and anti-Stokes spectral ***-assembled 16-mercaptohexadodecanoic acid monolayers covalently bond to an ultra-flat gold surface were used as a *** of blinking lines in the spectra also provides crucial information on the lateral resolution and indication of atomic-scale thermally induced morphological changes of the tip during the *** study provides access to unprecedented molecular-level information on physical parameters that crucially affect experiments under TERS *** study thereby improves the usability of TERS in day-to-day *** obtained information is of central importance for any experimental plasmonic investigation and for the application of TERS in the field of nanoscale thermometry.

Supramolecular polymer complexes with small molecules are self-assembled through non-covalent interactions and have been proposed for a wide variety of applications in materials science and *** research group has recently shown the possibility of forming highly ordered nanofibers of supramolecular complexes in their thermodynamically stable state using the electrospinning *** ultrafast solvent evaporation rate of electrospinning made possible the in-depth characterization of complexes that had never been prepared in their pure state before because of kinetic issues associated with their formation by conventional *** improved understanding of the formation mechanism allowed us to extend the concept to other techniques featuring a fast solvent evaporation rate,such as electrospray and *** this article,we review our most significant contributions in this research field.

Synthesis of High Magnetic Moment CoFe Nanoparticles via Interfacial Diffusion in Core/Shell Structured Co/Fe Nanoparticles

We report the synthesis of high magnetic moment CoFe nanoparticles via the diffusion of Co and Fe in core/shell structured Co/Fe *** an organic solution,Co nanoparticles were coated with a layer of Fe to form a Co/Fe core/shell *** raising the solution temperature led to inter-diffusion of Co and Fe and formation of CoFe alloy *** nanoparticles have high saturation magnetization of up to 192 emu/g CoFe and can be further stabilized by thermal annealing at 600℃.

After the microbiology based on Pasteur's method and polymerase chain reaction(PCR), the diagnosis company named Dendris has proposed a third-generation of diagnosis enabling the search of a broad range of pathogens with strong sensitivity and specificity. This extraordinary profile was possible thanks to the use of phosphorus dendrimers for which various techniques of deposition on a given support were investigated and described and analyzed in this report.

Cotunneling transport in ultra-narrow gold nanowire bundles

We investigate the charge transport in close-packed ultra-narrow （1.5 nm diameter） gold nanowires stabilized by oleylamine ligands. We give evidence of charging effects in the weakly coupled one-dimensional （1D） nanowires, monitored by the temperature and the bias voltage. At low temperature, in the Coulomb blockade regime, the current flow reveals an original cooperative multi-hopping process between 1D-segments of Au-NWs, minimising the charging energy cost. Above the Coulomb blockade threshold voltage and at high temperature, the charge transport evolves into a sequential tunneling regime between the nearest- nanowires. Our analysis shows that the effective length of the Au-NWs inside the bundle is similar to the 1D localisation length of the electronic wave function （of the order of 120 nm _＋ 20 nm）, but almost two orders of magnitude larger than the diameter of the nanowire. This result confirms the high structural quality of the Au-NW segments.

The common MTHFR C677T and A1298C variants are not associated with the risk of non-syndromic cleft lip/palate in northern Venezuela

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate （nsCL/P） is among the most common major birth defects, with complex inheritance involving multiple genes and environmental factors. Numerous studies of MTHFR, encoding methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, which catalyzes the rate-limiting step of folic acid biosynthesis, have shown inconsistent association of two common hypomorphic allelic variants, C677T and A1298C, in nsCL/P patients and, in some cases, their mothers. We have studied the MTHFR C677T and A1298C polymorphisms in nsCL/P patients, their mothers, and population-matched controls from northern Venezuela. We found no evidence for contribution of the MTHFR C677T and A1298C variants to the risk of nsCL/P in northern Venezuela. Overall, our findings fail to support a causal role of either the MTHFR C677T or A 1298C variants in the pathogenesis of nsCL/P in northern Venezuela.

Localized magnetization reversal processes in cobalt nanorods with different aspect ratios

We present results of the synthesis of cobalt nanorods using the polyol process and the mechanism of magnetization reversal. We show that the nucleation step is significantly dependent on the nature of the ruthenium chloride used as the nucleating agent. This allows varying the diameter and aspect ratio of the cobalt nanorods independently. Co nanorods with aspect ratio, mean diameter, and mean length in the ranges ARm =3-16, Din= 7-25 nm, and Lm=30-300 nm, respectively, were produced using this method. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy showed that a strong discrepancy between the structural coherence and morphological aspect ratio can exist because of stacking faults. The coercivity of assemblies of different nanorods was systematically measured, and the highest values were obtained for the smallest diameter and the largest structural coherence length. Micromagnetic simulations were performed to account for the dependence of the coercive field on the diameter. An important observation is that simple coherent magnetization rotation models do not apply to these magnetic nano-objects. Even for very small diameters （Dm = 5-10 nm） well below the theoretical coherent diameter Dcoh（CO）= 24 nm, we observed inhomogeneous reversal modes dominated by nucleation at the rod edges or at structural defects such as stacking faults. We conclude that, in order to produce high-coercivity materials based on nanowires, moderate aspect ratios of 5-10 are sufficient for providing a structural coherence similar to the morphological aspect ratio. Thus, the first priority should be to avoid the formation of stacking faults within the Co nanowires.

Advanced Anderson-Fabry disease presenting with left ventricular apical aneurysm and ventricular tachycardia

A 54-year-old female with Anderson-Fabry disease(AFD)-R342 Q missense mutation on exon 7 in alphagalactosidase A(GLA) gene- presented with sustained ventricular tachycardia. Imaging confirmed the presence of a new left ventricular apical aneurysm(LVAA) and a significantly reduced intra-cavitary gradient compared to two years prior. AFDcv is an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder caused by GLA enzyme deficiency. The phenotypic expression of AFD in the heart is not well described. Cardiac involvement can include left ventricular hypertrophy(LVH), which is typically symmetric, but can also mimic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy(HCM). Left ventricular apical aneurysm is a rare finding in HCM. We suggest a shared mechanism of LVAA formation in AFD and HCM, independent of the underlying cardiomyopathy. Mechanisms of LVAA formation in HCM include genetic predisposition and long-standing left ventricular wall stress from elevated intra-cavitary systolic pressures due to mid-cavitary obstruction. Both mechanisms are supported in this patient(a brother with AFD also developed a small LVAA). Screening for AFD should be considered in cases of unexplained LVH, particularly in patients with the aneurysmal variant of HCM.

Sendai Five Years on: Reflections on the Role of International Law in the Creation and Reduction of Disaster Risk

This article offers a critical examination of the position of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 within international law. It is argued that any interrogation into the relationship between international law and disaster risk reduction(DRR) must begin not with existing DRR laws and policies, but rather with an enquiry into the nature of disaster risk and the role of international law in its creation and reduction. It is demonstrated how, while areas such as international human rights law can be utilized to enforce obligations in support of DRR, other areas—in particular international investment law—actively work to undermine DRR efforts. In order for international law to be a productive tool in the reduction of disaster risk, international lawyers must engage with critical work in disaster studies and explore the role that international law has played, and can play, in creating and addressing hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacities.

MicroRNA sequences modulating inflammation and lipid accumulation in macrophage “foam” cells: Implications for atherosclerosis

Accumulation of macrophage"foam"cells,laden with cholesterol and cholesteryl ester,within the intima of large arteries,is a hallmark of early"fatty streak"lesions which can progress to complex,multicellular atheromatous plaques,involving lipoproteins from the bloodstream and cells of the innate and adaptive immune *** accumulation triggers induction of genes encoding proteins mediating the atheroprotective cholesterol efflux *** the arterial intima,however,this mechanism is overwhelmed,leading to distinct changes in macrophage phenotype and inflammatory *** the last decade marked gains have been made in understanding of the epigenetic landscape which influence macrophage function,and in particular the importance of small non-coding micro-RNA(miRNA)sequences in this *** review identifies some of the miRNA sequences which play a key role in regulating"foam"cell formation and atherogenesis,highlighting sequences involved in cholesterol accumulation,those influencing inflammation in sterol-loaded cells,and novel sequences and pathways which may offer new strategies to influence macrophage function within atherosclerotic lesions.
