Early osmotic adjustment responses in drought-resistant and drought-sensitive oilseed rape

The impact of osmotic stress on growth, physiolo- gy, and metabolism of winter oilseed rape （Brassica napus L.） was investigated by detailed analysis of biomass traits, hormone metabolites and osmolytes in two genetically unrelated drought-tolerant genotypes and two unrelated drought-sensitive genotypes. Seedlings were grown in vitro under controlled conditions and osmotic stress was simulated by applying a gradual treatment with polyethylene glycol （PEG 6ooo）, followed by hypo-osmotic treatment of variants used for metabolite determination. The results provide a basis for the identification of reliable selection criteria for drought resistance in oilseed rape. The in vitro cultivation system established during this study enabled effective discrimination of early osmotic stress responses between drought-resistant and -susceptible oilseed rape genotypes that also show large differences in relative seed yield under drought conditions in the field. Clear physiological and metabolic differences wereobserved between the drought-resistant and drought-sensitive genotypes, suggesting that osmotic adjustment is a key component of drought response in oilseed rape. Unexpected- ly, however, the drought-resistant genotypes did not show typical hormonal adjustment and osmolyte accumulation, suggesting that they possess alternative physiological mech- anisms enabling avoidance of stress symptoms.

Sendai Five Years on: Reflections on the Role of International Law in the Creation and Reduction of Disaster Risk

This article offers a critical examination of the position of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 within international law. It is argued that any interrogation into the relationship between international law and disaster risk reduction(DRR) must begin not with existing DRR laws and policies, but rather with an enquiry into the nature of disaster risk and the role of international law in its creation and reduction. It is demonstrated how, while areas such as international human rights law can be utilized to enforce obligations in support of DRR, other areas—in particular international investment law—actively work to undermine DRR efforts. In order for international law to be a productive tool in the reduction of disaster risk, international lawyers must engage with critical work in disaster studies and explore the role that international law has played, and can play, in creating and addressing hazards, vulnerabilities, and capacities.

Determination of Electron Collision Cross Sections Set for Tetramethysilane

A swarm analysis technique based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation is used to derive low energy electron collision cross sections for tetramethylsilane （TMS）. The calculated swarm parameters with this first available cross sections set is consistent with measured values of the swarm parameters. Calculations of transport parameters in mixtures of TMS with argon are also presented.

Exploratory Study of Intolerance of Uncertainty and Its Cognitive Processes by the Stroop Task among Parents of a Childhood Cancer Survivor

*** study has examined the relationship between the factor of intolerance of uncertainty and its effects on the cognitive processes among parents of a childhood cancer *** of uncertainty is a central factor in generalized anxiety disorder;an anxiety disorder in which impaired processing of cognitive information in the form of cognitive biases is also *** aim of the study was to measure,via a classical Stroop test and an emotional Stroop test,the orientation of selective attention in relation to the uncertainty intolerance ***.61 parents of a childhood cancer survivor(aged 4 to 6 years)were recruited from hospitals in the Province of Liege(Belgium).Parents completed questionnaires on intolerance of uncertainty and its associated factors(i.e.,usefulness of worry,cognitive avoidance,problem-solving attitude,and ruminations)and performed a Stroop test and an emotional Stroop *** correlations and multiple linear regressions were *** results indicated positive and significant correlations between the emotional Stroop(negative interference index)and intolerance to uncertainty but also with repetitive thoughts(ruminations)and *** regressions showed that depressive symptoms seem to contribute to explaining longer latencies for the interference condition(color word written in another color).*** have been published to improve the management of parents of a childhood cancer survivor,but parent-centered neuropsychological studies are still needed and should be developed to improve prevention and detection initiatives for these families.

This paper is devoted to the study of the subspace of Wm＇＂ of functions that vanish on a part γ0 of the boundary. The author gives a crucial estimate of the Poincare constant in balls centered on the boundary of γ0. Then, the convolution-translation method, a variant of the standard mollifier technique, can be used to prove the density of smooth functions that vanish in a neighborhood of γ0, in this subspace. The result is first proved for m = 1, then generalized to the case where m 〉 1, in any dimension, in the framework of Lipschitz-continuous domain. However, as may be expected, it is needed to make additional assumptions on the boundary of γ0, namely that it is locally the graph of some Lipschitz-continuous function.

Skill Optimization Algorithm:A New Human-Based Metaheuristic Technique

Metaheuristic algorithms are widely used in solving optimization *** this paper,a new metaheuristic algorithm called Skill Optimization Algorithm(SOA)is proposed to solve optimization *** fundamental inspiration in designing SOA is human efforts to acquire and improve *** stages of SOA are mathematically modeled in two phases,including:(i)exploration,skill acquisition from experts and(ii)exploitation,skill improvement based on practice and individual *** efficiency of SOA in optimization applications is analyzed through testing this algorithm on a set of twenty-three standard benchmark functions of a variety of unimodal,high-dimensional multimodal,and fixed-dimensional multimodal *** optimization results show that SOA,by balancing exploration and exploitation,is able to provide good performance and appropriate solutions for optimization *** addition,the performance of SOA in optimization is compared with ten metaheuristic algorithms to evaluate the quality of the results obtained by the proposed *** and comparison of the obtained simulation results show that the proposed SOA has a superior performance over the considered algorithms and achievesmuch more competitive results.

Impacts of climate change on the ecotoxicology of chemical contaminants in estuarine organisms

Global climate change effects will vary geographically, and effects on estuaries should be independently considered. This review of the impacts of climate change on the ecotoxicology of chemical contaminants aims to summarize responses that are specific to estuafine species. Estuarine organisms are uniquely adapted to large fluctuations in temperature, salinity, oxygen, and pH, and yet future changes in climate may make them more susceptible to chemical contaminants. Recent research has hig- hlighted the interactive effects of chemical and nonchemical stressors on chemical uptake, metabolism, and organism survival. Assessments have revealed that the nature of the interaction between climate variables and chemical pollution will depend on es- tuarine species and life stage, duration and timing of exposure, prior stressor exposure, and contaminant class. A need for further research to elucidate mechanisms of toxicity under different abiotic conditions and to incorporate climate change factors into toxicity testing was identified. These efforts will improve environmental risk assessment of chemical contaminants and manage- ment capabilities under changing climate conditions [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 641-652, 2015].
