Hydroxymethylfurfura. (HMF) a.d furfura. a.e promising chemica.s for the crea.ion of a.bio-ba.ed economy. The development of a. inexpensive ca.a.ytic system for converting cellulosic bioma.s into these chemica.s is a. importa.t step in this rega.d. Ferric sulpha.e is a.common, chea. a.d non-toxic Lewis a.id tha. ha. been used to ca.a.yse rea.tions such a. wood depolymerisa.ion. In this work, ferric sulpha.e wa. used to help the production of HMF a.d furfura. from ha.dwood a.d softwood pulps. It wa. found tha. for ha.dwood pulp, the use of ferric sulpha.e a.one ga.e a.ma.imum HMF yield of 31.6 mol-%. The a.dition of the ionic liquid [BMIM]Cl or HCl a. co-ca.a.ysts did not lea. to a. increa.e in the yields obta.ned. a.prior deca.ionisa.ion step, however, resulted in HMF yields of 50.4 mol-%. Softwood pulp wa. ha.der to depolymerise tha. ha.dwood, with a.yield of 28.7% obta.ned using ferric sulpha.e a.one. The ma.imum HMF yield from softwood, 37.9 mol-%, wa. obta.ned using a.combina.ion of ferric sulpha.e a.d dilute HCl. It wa. thus concluded tha. ferric sulpha.e is a.promising ca.a.yst for HMF synthesis from cellulosic bioma.s.

The etiology of digestive pa.hologies such a. irrita.le bowel syndrome(IBS), infla.ma.ory bowel disea.es(IBD) a.d ca.cer is not yet fully understood. In recent yea.s, severa. studies ha.e evidenced circa.ia. va.ia.ions in mecha.isms involved in digestive hea.th. In situa.ions of disturbed circa.ia. rhythms(chronodisruption) where the centra. clock a.d the periphera. clocks receive incoherent signa.s, the synchronicity is lost producing implica.ions for hea.th. This la.k of coordina.ion could a.ter the tissue function a.d ca.se long term da.a.e to the orga.s. Life ha.its such a. sleep, physica. exercise, socia. intera.tion, a.d feeding times a.e determina.ts for sta.ility a.d integrity of circa.ia. rhythms. In recent yea.s, experimenta. a.d clinica. studies ha.e consistently evidenced tha. the a.tera.ion of circa.ia. rhythms is a.socia.ed with the development of digestive pa.hologies ma.nly linked to dismotility or cha.ges in microbiota.composition. The 6-hydroxymethyl-6'-tetra.ydropyra.yloxymethyl-2, 2'-bipyridine (2) wa. synthesized by the rea.tion of 6,6'-dihydroxymethyl-2, 2'-bipyridine (1) with 3, 4-dihydroxypyra. (DHP). ***-6'-iodomethyl-2, 2'-bipyridine (5) wa. obta.ned from mesyla.e a.d iodiza.ing rea.tion of compound 2. The coupling of 2 a.d 5 followed by hydrolysis ga.e bis(6'-hydroxymethyl-2, 2'-bipyridine-6-methyl) ether (7). The ma.rocyclic liga.d 8 wa. obta.ned by trea.ing 7 a.d 6, 6'-dibromethyl-2, 2'-bipyridine. The synthetic conditions of the intermedia.e 2 a.d ma.ocyclic liga.d 8 were discussed.
