Spinal deformities in a wild line of Poecilia wingei bred in captivity:report of cases and review of the literature

Objective:To describe the occurrence of various spinal deformations in a captive-bred wild line of Poecilia wingei(***).Methods:Fish belonging to a wild line of *** caught from Laguna de Los Patos,Venezuela,were bred in an aquarium home-breeding system during a period of three years(2006-2009).The spinal curvature was observed to study spinal deformities in ***:Out of a total of 600 fish,22 showed different types of deformities(scoliosis,lordosis,kyphosis),with a higher incidence in ***,swimming and breeding of deformed fish were generally ***:Possible causes for spinal curvature in fish are discussed on the basis of the current *** it is not possible to determine the exact cause(s)of spinal deformities observed in the present study,traumatic injuries,nutritional imbalances,genetic defects or a combination of these factors can be supposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of such lesions.

Sudden death in a captive meerkat(Suricata suricatta) with arterial medial and myocardial calcification

A 1-year-old male meerkat was found dead by the *** animal was clinically healthy and was regularly vaccinated for distemper *** revealed multifocal to confluent dry white areas in the myocardium,pneumonia and congestive *** the other organs,including gross vessels,were macroscopically *** heart showed histologically large,multifocal to confluent areas of mineralization of the myocardium and the wall of small coronary *** calcifications were also observed in the hepatic portal tracts and kidneys arteries of small/medium *** arterial lumen appeared narrowed and the wall thickened due to the calcification of the tunica *** veterinary medicine,arterial mineralization is regarded as a metastatic calcification,as the result of hypercalcemia and/or ***,today,the pathogenesis of medial artery calcification in humans seems to be the results of an active process resembling embryonic osteogenesis,rather than a mere passive process.

The Role of Heat Shock Proteins in Mammary Neoplasms: A Brief Review

Research into heat shock proteins (HSPs) for the clinical management of tumours has intensified as new evidence shows they can be used as biomarkers in carcinogenesis and are related to poor prognosis in some cancer types. Members of small HSP, HSP70 and HSP90 families have been studied extensively in breast cancer. This article reviews current understanding of the role of HSP and HSF-1 (Heat shock factor 1) expression in human breast cancer and looks at its potential diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic value. The exciting progress that has been made using HSP 90 inhibitors in breast cancer treatment is examined and the results of preliminary studies on the expression of stress proteins in the animal model canine mammary tumours are also presented.

Multiple, life-compatible, congenital physical deformities in association with splenic lymphangiomatosis in Zoogoneticus tequila (Webb & Miller, 1998)

The present case describes an adult femaleZoogoneticus tequila showing a congenital, marked shortening with left deviation of the upper and lower jaws, in association with microphthalmia of the left eye. The fish was normally fed and had a normal reproductive behaviour. After spontaneous death occurred at an advanced age, the fish was submitted for necropsy examination, which revealed the presence of an oval, 1 cm× 0.5 cm× 0.5 cm in size, cystic structure containing clear amber fluid, located in the coelomic cavity, in place of the spleen. Histopathological examination revealed multiple cystic spaces empty or filled with a slightly eosinophilic, homogenous, proteinaceous material, and lined by flattened, vimentin-positive endothelial-like cells. Residual parts of splenic tissue were also admixed with cystic spaces, suggesting a final diagnosis of cystic lymphangiomatosis of the spleen, which has not been previously described in fish. This is the first report of multiple, life-compatible, congenital physical deformities in association with splenic lymphangiomatosis inZoogoneticus tequila.
