Incidence, risk factors, and outcome of BK polyomavirus infection after kidney transplantation

BACKGROUND Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy is a leading cause of kidney allograft failure. Therapeutic options are limited and prompt reduction of the net state of immunosuppression represents the mainstay of treatment. More recent application of aggressive screening and management protocols for BK-virus infection after renal transplantation has shown encouraging results. Nevertheless,long-term outcome for patients with BK-viremia and nephropathy remains obscure. Risk factors for BK-virus infection are also *** To investigate incidence, risk factors, and outcome of BK-virus infection after kidney *** This single-centre observational study with a median follow up of 57(31-80) mo comprises 629 consecutive adult patients who underwent kidney transplantation between 2007 and 2013. Data were prospectively recorded and annually reviewed until 2016. Recipients were periodically screened for BK-virus by plasmaquantitative polymerized chain reaction. Patients with BK viral load ≥ 1000 copies/mL were diagnosed BK-viremia and underwent histological assessment to rule out nephropathy. In case of BK-viremia, immunosuppression was minimized according to a prespecified protocol. The following outcomes were evaluated: patient survival, overall graft survival, graft failure considering death as a competing risk, 30-d-event-censored graft failure, response to treatment,rejection, renal function, urologic complications, opportunistic infections, newonset diabetes after transplantation, and malignancies. We used a multivariable model to analyse risk factors for BK-viremia and *** BK-viremia was detected in 9.5% recipients. Initial viral load was high(≥ 10000 copies/mL) in 66.7% and low(< 10000 copies/mL) in 33.3% of these ***-associated nephropathy was diagnosed in 6.5% of the study population. Treatment options for localised renal cell carcinoma of the transplanted kidney

Currently,there is no consensus among the transplant community about the treatment of renal cell carcinoma(RCC)of the transplanted *** recently,graftectomy was universally considered the golden standard,regardless of the characteristics of the *** to the encouraging results observed in native kidneys,conservative options such as nephron-sparing surgery(NSS)(enucleation and partial nephrectomy)and ablative therapy(radiofrequency ablation,cryoablation,microwave ablation,high-intensity focused ultrasound,and irreversible electroporation)have been progressively used in carefully selected recipients with early-stage allograft *** reports show excellent patient survival,optimal oncological outcome,and preserved renal function with acceptable complication ***,the rarity and the heterogeneity of the disease,the number of options available,and the lack of long-term follow-up data do not allow to adequately define treatment-specific advantages and *** role of active surveillance and immunosuppression management remain also *** order to offer a better insight into this difficult topic and to help clinicians choose the best therapy for their patients,we performed and extensive review of the *** focused on epidemiology,clinical presentation,diagnostic work up,staging strategies,tumour characteristics,treatment modalities,and follow-up *** research confirms that both NSS and focal ablation represent a valuable alternative to graftectomy for kidney transplant recipients with American Joint Committee on Cancer stage T1aN0M0 *** on T1bN0M0 lesions are scarce but suggest extra *** designed multi-centre prospective clinical trials are warranted.

A video camera recording method for measuring terminal velocity of seed dispersal by wind

An accurate and convenient method is essential for measuring the terminal velocity of seeds dispersed by *** and random errors produced by existing methods lower the accuracy and convenience in determining seed terminal *** this study,a video camera was used to record the falling process of forty-one species of wind-borne seed with eight appendage structures and seven aerodynamic behaviors in a settling tower at a speed of 50 frames per second(fps).The videos were analyzed by Quick Time Player to determine seed acceleration height,acceleration time,and terminal *** results showed that acceleration height and time,terminal velocity,and the diff erence between terminal velocity and descent velocity(DTD)increased with wing *** with dropping methods,the camera recording method eliminated the eff ect of acceleration and corrected seed terminal *** on wing loading,release heights were determined for accurate measurement of terminal velocity of diff erent *** method,due to its inexpensive equipment,high accuracy,easy observation and operation,can be applied to measure the terminal velocity of wind dispersed seeds,and provides a promising method in exploring the dispersal process of seeds.

Does Education Affect Individual Well-Being? Some Italian Empirical Evidences

Using data from the last European Survey on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), this paper focuses on the measurement of well-being and on its association with education. EU-SILC survey gives information on several aspects of people’s daily life (i.e. housing, labour, health, education, finance, material deprivation and possession of durables) allowing a multi-dimensional approach to the study of well-being, poverty and social exclusion. For our aims we have considered only survey data collected in Italy. Due to the multidimensionality of well-being concept, we have selected some variables related principally to four main dimensions of well-being, which are financial endowment, housing conditions and goods possessions, health status, and environment. A first explanatory analysis via multivariate regression model has highlighted the effect of education on the factors considered. Finally, a latent class regression analysis has been used to cluster individuals into mutually exclusive latent classes which identify different intensities of well-being (the latent trait) taking into account the effect of education in the membership probability of each latent class.

Effects of Silicon Nanoparticles on the Transient Liquid Phase Bonding of 304 Stainless Steel

Transient liquid phase （TLP） bonding of 304 stainless steel with nickel based filler metal, BNi-9, was performed to study the influence of silicon nanoparticles （NPs） on the mechanical and structural properties of the bonding area. It was found that silicon NPs act as a melting point depressant in the brazing process; the formation of silicon TLP induces the dissolution of elements of the metal filler and promotes a uniform distribution in the bonding area. Silicon NPs induce the development of smaller eutectic structures in the melting zone; it has been related to microhardness measurements, which are lower when the silicon NPs are used in the brazing process.

Achieving superior performance of nanoparticle systems is one of the biggest challenges in *** major phenomena,occurring during the reactions,hinder the development of the full potential of nanoparticle catalysts:sintering and contamination with carbon containing species,sometimes called ***,we demonstrate that Ir nanocrystals,arranged into periodic networks on hexagonal boron nitride(h-BN)supports,can be restored without sintering after contamination by persistent *** restoration yields the complete removal of carbon from the nanocrystals,which keep their crystalline structure,allowing operation without *** findings,together with the possibility of fine tuning the nanocrystals size,confer this nanoparticle system a great potential as a testbed to extract key information about catalysis-mediated oxidation *** the case of the CO oxidation by O2,reaction of interest in environmental science and green energy production,the existence of chemical processes not observed before in other nanoparticle systems is demonstrated.
