The installation of vast quantities of additional new sensing and communication equipment, in conjunction with building the computing infrastructure to store and manage data gathered by this equipment, has been the fi rst step in the creation of what is generically referred to as the "smart grid" for the electric transmission system. With this enormous capital investment in equipment having been made, attention is now focused on developing methods to analyze and visualize this large data set. The most direct use of this large set of new data will be in data visualization. This paper presents a survey of some visualization techniques that have been deployed by the electric power industry for visualizing data over the past several years. These techniques include pie charts, animation, contouring, time-varying graphs, geographic-based displays, image blending, and data aggregation techniques. The paper then emphasizes a newer concept of using word-sized graphics called sparklines as an extremely eff ective method of showing large amounts of timevarying data.

Iron is essential to life,but surprisingly little is known about how iron is managed in nonvertebrate *** mammals,the well-characterized transferrins bind iron and are involved in iron transport or immunity,whereas other members of the transferrin family do not have a role in iron *** insects,the functions of transferrins are still poorly *** goals of this project were to identify the transferrin genes in a diverse set of insect species,resolve the evolutionary relationships among these genes,and predict which of the transferrins are likely to have a role in iron *** phylogenetic analysis of transferrins from 16 orders of insects and two orders of noninsect hexapods demonstrated that there are four orthologous groups of insect *** analysis suggests that transferrin 2 arose prior to the origin of insects,and transferrins/,i,and 4 arose early in insect *** sequence analysis of each of the insect transferrins was used to predict signal peptides,carboxyl-terminal transmembrane regions,GPI-anchors,and iron *** on this analysis,we suggest that transferrins 2,and 4 are unlikely to play a major role in iron *** contrast,the transferrin 1 orthologs are predicted to be secreted,soluble,iron-binding *** conclude that transferrin 1 orthologs are the most likely to play an important role in iron ***,it appears that the louse,aphid,and thrips lineages have lost the transferrin 1 gene and,thus,have evolved to manage iron without transferrins.

We demonstrate a pH sensor based on ultrasensitive nanosize Schottky junctions formed within bottom-up grown dopant-flee arrays of assembled silicon nanowires. A new measurement concept relying on a continuous gate sweep is presented, which allows the straightforward determination of the point of maximum sensitivity of the device and allows sensing experiments to be performed in the optimum regime. Integration of devices into a portable fluidic system and an electrode isolation strategy affords a stable environment and enables long time robust FET sensing measurements in a liquid environment to be carried out. Investigations of the physical and chemical sensitivity of our devices at different pH values and a comparison with theoretical limits are also discussed. We believe that such a combination of nanofabrication and engineering advances makes this Schottky barrier-powered silicon nanowire lab-on-a-chip platform suitable for efficient biodetection and even for more complex biochemical analysis.

In silico genome mining provides easy access to secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters(BGCs)encoding the biosynthesis of many bioactive compounds,which are the basis for many important drugs used in human ***,the association between BGCs and other functions encoded in the genomes of producers have remained ***,we present a systems biology workflow that integrates genome mining with a detailed pangenome analysis for detecting genes associated with a particular *** analyzed 3,889 enterobacterial genomes and found 13,266 BGCs,represented by 252 distinct BGC families and 347 additional singletons.A pangenome analysis revealed 88 genes putatively associated with a specific BGC coding for the colon cancer-related colibactin that code for diverse metabolic and regulatory *** presented workflow opens up the possibility to discover novel secondary metabolites,better understand their physiological roles,and provides a guide to identify and analyze BGC associated gene sets.

Background： Two approaches mark the difference between the ＂ecological＂ and ＂agricultural＂ view of the biodiversity/ growth relation. In ecology the trend is averaged by taking monocultures of all species as baseline to evaluate mixtures. This contrasts the ＂agricultural＂ view focusing on the most productive species or species combination as baseline to evaluate mixtures. The present study investigates the change of highest rates （maximum） productivities in grasslands and forests with increasing plant （or tree） diversity, and compares these with the average response. Methods： We base our analysis on existing published datasets relating the growth of plant stands （growth rate per land area） to the diversity on the same plot. We use a global dataset （Ellis et al. 2012 and MODIS-data, see Fig. 1）, the grassland experiment in lena （Buchmann et al. 2017）, the regional study on forests in Romania and Germany by Bouriaud et al. （2016）, and data from the German National Forest inventory （BWl 3, see Fig. 3）. In all cases the average response of growth to changes in biodiversity as well as the boundary line of the maximum values was calculated. Results： in both vegetation types a decreasing trend of maximum productivity with any added species emerges, contrasting the average trend that was positive in grassland, but absent in forests. The trend of maximum values was non-significant in grasslands probably due to the fact that not all combinations of species mixtures were available. In temperate forests, maximum productivity decreases significantly by about 10% in regional studies and by 8% at national scale with each added species. Maximum biomass per area was the same for managed and unmanaged conditions. A global assessment of NPP and biodiversity could also not confirm a general positive biodiversity- productivity relationship. Open cellular magnesium alloys for biodegradable orthopaedic implants

Replication processing using NaCl spaceholders offers the possibility to produce cellular structures for a range of Mg alloys. Four Mg alloys (AZ63, M2, ZM21 and MZX211) were processed into open cellular structures with a pore size near 500 μm and a porosity of 75% using an optimized NaCl leaching procedure. The production method was found to be robust and yielded samples of acceptable strength and stiffness. Their dissolution rate (by H2 release in simulated body fluid) and mechanical properties (by cyclic compression) were measured. For all 4 alloys the initial mechanical properties mimic those of cancellous bone;however, the dissolution rate is too high for direct use in the human body, leading to excessive hydrogen evolution and overly rapid degradation of mechanical properties. Further post-processing of the material is thus required.
