Background:Acre has reported the highest incidence of American cutaneous leishmaniasis(ACL)in Brazil in recent *** present study seeks to identify high and low risk agglomerations of ACL in space and space-time during the period from 2007 to 2013 in Acre,and also to characterize the occurrence of the disease in time and according to sociodemographic ***:This is an ecological study,the study population of which consisted of autochthonous ACL cases notified in the municipalities of Acre by an epidemiological surveillance *** statistics of SaTScan^(TM)software were used to identify spatial and space-time *** addition,the cases were characterized by sex,age,home situation(in a rural or urban area),and temporal ***:Acre reported an incidence rate of 12.4 cases per 10000 inhabitant-years in the study period,with the rates varied greatly(standard deviation of 21.8)among their 22 *** agglomeration of high risk and three of low risk were detected in space and *** of the five micro-regions of Acre presented a stationary temporal *** profile of transmission varied according to the *** speaking,the disease occurred more often among young people,those of male gender,and those living in rural ***:Acre has stood out within the Brazilian national context due to its high rates of ACL incidence in the central region of the Acre *** high rates in the micro-region of Brasileia are related to the disease’s intra/peridomiciliary occurrence,and it would seem that the municipality of Sena Madureira is approaching a transmission pattern similar to that of *** other micro-regions,the profile of the disease’s transmission is mainly related to the forest/sylvatic cycle of ACL.

The increasing levels of mercury（Hg） found in the atmosphere arising from anthropogenic sources, have been the object of great concern in the past two decades in industrialized countries. Brazil is the seventh country with the highest rate of mercury in the *** major input of Hg to ecosystems is through atmospheric deposition（wet and dry）, being transported in the atmosphere over large distances. The forest biomes are of strong importance in the atmosphere/soil cycling of elemental Hg through foliar uptake and subsequent transference to the soil through litter, playing an important role as sink of this element. Soil microarthropods are keys to understanding the soil ecosystem, and for such purpose were characterized by the soil fauna of two Units of Forest Conservation of the state of the rio de Janeiro, inwhich one of the areas suffer quite interference from petrochemicals and industrial anthropogenic activities and other area almost exempts of these perturbations. The results showed that soil and litter of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil tend to stock high mercury concentrations, which could affect the abundance and richness of soil fauna, endangering its biodiversity and thereby the functioning of ecosystems.

We apply stochastic seismic inversion and Bayesian facies classification for porosity modeling and igneous rock identification in the presalt interval of the Santos Basin. This integration of seismic and well-derived information enhances reservoir characterization. Stochastic inversion and Bayesian classification are powerful tools because they permit addressing the uncertainties in the model. We used the ES-MDA algorithm to achieve the realizations equivalent to the percentiles P10, P50, and P90 of acoustic impedance, a novel method for acoustic inversion in presalt. The facies were divided into five: reservoir 1,reservoir 2, tight carbonates, clayey rocks, and igneous rocks. To deal with the overlaps in acoustic impedance values of facies, we included geological information using a priori probability, indicating that structural highs are reservoir-dominated. To illustrate our approach, we conducted porosity modeling using facies-related rock-physics models for rock-physics inversion in an area with a well drilled in a coquina bank and evaluated the thickness and extension of an igneous intrusion near the carbonate-salt interface. The modeled porosity and the classified seismic facies are in good agreement with the ones observed in the wells. Notably, the coquinas bank presents an improvement in the porosity towards the top. The a priori probability model was crucial for limiting the clayey rocks to the structural lows. In Well B, the hit rate of the igneous rock in the three scenarios is higher than 60%, showing an excellent thickness-prediction capability.

The dependencies of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis liquid hydrocarbon product distribution on operating pressure and temperature have been studied over three potassium-promoted iron catalysts with increasing potassium molar content. The study followed an experimental planning and the results were analyzed based on surface response methodology. The effects of different operating conditions and potassium contents on the liquid product distribution were compared based on number average carbon number and dispersion. results showed that high pressures （25 to 30 arm） favored the production of waxes that could be converted into liquid fuels through hydrocracking, while greater direct selectivity towards diesel was favored by low pressure （20 arm） using catalysts with low potassium to iron molar ratios. The liquid product distribution produced using an iron catalyst with high potassium content presented higher number-average number of carbons when compared to the distribution obtained using an iron catalyst with low potassium content.

AIM: To evaluate the serum levels of cytokeratins and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in diagnosis, staging and prognosis of patients with colorectal ***: The sample consisted of 169 patients. One hundred blood donors formed the control group. radical surgery was performed on 120 patients, with an average follow-up duration of 22.3 mo. relapses occurred in 23individuals after an average of 18.09 mo. CEA was assayed via the Delfia(r) method with a limit of 5 ng/mL. Cytokeratins were assayed via the LIA-mat(r) TPA-M Prolifigen(r) method with a limit of 72 U/***: In the diagnosis of patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma, CEA showed a sensitivity of 56%, a specificity of 95%, a positive predictive value of 94%, a negative predictive value of 50% and an accuracy of 76.8%.TPA-M had a sensitivity of 70%, a specificity of 96%, a positive predictive value of 97%, a negative predictive value of 66% and an accuracy of 93.6%. The elevation of one of the markers was shown to have a sensitivity of 76.9%, a specificity of 91%, a positive predictive value of 93.5%, a negative predictive value of 70% and an accuracy of 83.6%.There was no variation in the levels of the markers according to the degree of cell differentiation while there was an elevation in their concentrations in accordance with the increase in neoplastic dissemination. There was a statistically significant difference between the patients with stage Ⅳ lesions and those with stages Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ *** regard to CEA, the averagelevel was 14.2 ng/mL in patients with stage Ⅰ lesions, 8.5 ng/mL in patients with stage Ⅱ lesions, 8.0 ng/mL in patients with stage Ⅲ lesions and 87.7 ng/mL in patients with stage Ⅳ lesions. In relation to TPA-M, the levels were 153.1 U/L in patients with stage Ⅰtumors, 106.5 U/L in patients with stage Ⅱ tumors, 136.3 U/L in patients with stage Ⅲ tumors and 464.3 U/L in patients with stage Ⅳ tumors. There was a statistical difference in patients with a high CEA level

Over the past two decades, the CICECO-hub scientists have devoted substantial efforts to advancing bioactiveinorganic materials based on calcium phosphates and alkali-free bioactive glasses. A key focus has been thedeliberate incorporation of therapeutic ions like Mg, Sr, Zn, Mn, or Ga to enhance osteointegration and vascularization,confer antioxidant properties, and impart antimicrobial effects, marking significant contributions tothe field of biomaterials and bone tissue engineering. Such an approach is expected to circumvent the uncertaintiesposed by methods relying on growth factors, such as bone morphogenetic proteins, parathyroidhormone, and platelet-rich plasma, along with their associated high costs and potential adverse side effects. Thiscomprehensive overview of CICECO-hub’s significant contributions to the forefront inorganic biomaterials acrossall research aspects and dimensionalities (powders, granules, thin films, bulk materials, and porous structures),follows a unified approach rooted in a cohesive conceptual framework, including synthesis, characterization, andtesting protocols. Tangible outcomes [injectable cements, durable implant coatings, and bone graft substitutes(scaffolds) featuring customized porous architectures for implant fixation, osteointegration, accelerated boneregeneration in critical-sized bone defects] were achieved. The manuscript showcases specific biofunctionalexamples of successful biomedical applications and effective translations to the market of bone grafts foradvanced therapies.

Studies have confirmed that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells （MSCs） can be used for treatment of several nervous system diseases. However, isolation of bone marrow-derived MSCs （BMSCs） is an invasive and painful process and the yield is very low. Therefore, there is a need to search for other alterative stem cell sources. Adipose-derived MSCs （ADSCs） have phenotypic and gene expression profiles similar to those of BMSCs. The production of ADSCs is greater than that of BMSCs, and ADSCs proliferate faster than BMSCs. To compare the effects of venous grafts containing BMSCs or ADSCs on sciatic nerve injury, in this study, rats were randomly divided into four groups： sham （only sciatic nerve exposed）, Matrigel （MG; sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous transplantation of MG vehicle）, ADSCs （sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous MG containing ADSCs）, and BMSCs （sciatic nerve injury ＋ intravenous MG containing BMSCs） groups. Sciatic functional index was calculated to evaluate the function of injured sciatic nerve. Morphologic characteristics of nerves distal to the lesion were observed by toluidine blue staining. Spinal motor neurons labeled with Fluoro-Gold were quantitatively assessed. Compared with sham-operated rats, sciatic functional index was lower, the density of small-diameter fibers was significantly increased, and the number of motor neurons significantly decreased in rats with sciatic nerve injury. Neither ADSCs nor BMSCs significantly improved the sciatic nerve function of rats with sciatic nerve injury,increased fiber density, fiber diameters, axonal diameters, myelin sheath thickness, and G ratios （axonal diameter/fiber diameter ratios） in the sciatic nerve distal to the lesion site. There was no significant difference in the number of spinal motor neurons among ADSCs, BMSCs and MG groups. These results suggest that neither BMSCs nor ADSCs provide satisfactory results for peripheral nerve repair when using MG as the conductor for engraftment.

In standard interval mapping (IM) of quantitative trait loci (QTL), the QTL effect is described by a normal mixture model. When this assumption of normality is violated, the most commonly adopted strategy is to use the previous model after data transformation. However, an appropriate transformation may not exist or may be difficult to find. Also this approach can raise interpretation issues. An interesting alternative is to consider a skew-normal mixture model in standard IM, and the resulting method is here denoted as skew-normal IM. This flexible model that includes the usual symmetric normal distribution as a special case is important, allowing continuous variation from normality to non-normality. In this paper we briefly introduce the main peculiarities of the skew-normal distribution. The maximum likelihood estimates of parameters of the skew-normal distribution are obtained by the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed model is illustrated with real data from an intercross experiment that shows a significant departure from the normality assumption. The performance of the skew-normal IM is assessed via stochastic simulation. The results indicate that the skew-normal IM has higher power for QTL detection and better precision of QTL location as compared to standard IM and nonparametric IM.

Acromyrmex ameliae sp. n. （Hymenoptera： Formicidae）： A new social parasite of leaf-cutting ants in Brazil

The fungus-growing ants （Tribe Attini） are a New World group of〉 200 species, all obligate symbionts with a fungus they use for food. Four attine taxa are known to be social parasites of other attines. Acromyrmex （ Pseudoatta） argentina argentina and Acromyrmex （Pseudoatta） argentina platensis （parasites of Acromyrmex lundi）, and Acromyrmex sp. （a parasite of Acromyrmex rugosus） produce no worker caste. In contrast, the recently discovered Acromyrmex insinuator （a parasite of Acromyrmex echinatior） does produce workers. Here, we describe a new species, Acromyrmex ameliae, a social parasite of Acromyrmex subterraneus subterraneus and Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus in Minas Gerais, Brasil. Like A. insinuator, it produces workers and appears to be closely related to its hosts. Similar social parasites may be fairly common in the fungus-growing ants, but overlooked due to the close resemblance between parasite and host workers.
