The valorization of Amazonian wood residues into active chemical compounds could be an eco-friendly,cost-effective and valuable way to develop wood preservative formulations to enhance the decay and termite resistance of low-durable wood ***(Vouacapoua americana.,Fabaceae)is a well-known Guianese wood spe-cies commonly used in local wood construction due to its outstanding natural durability,which results from the presence of a large panel of extractives *** addition,its industrial processing generates large amounts of *** residues were extracted by maceration using four different solvents(water/ethanol,ethyl acetate,hexane and dichloromethane/methanol),separately and *** yield of each extractive fraction was determined,and their chemical compositions were analyzed by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry(LC-MS).Ethyl acetate led to the highest extraction yield,and the active compounds were identiﬁed in the obtained extractive *** this sense,the fungicidal and termite-repellent properties of these extractives were then tested using a screening laboratory(with temperate and tropical microorganisms),according to the solution concentration(1%,2.5%,5%,8%and 10%).Finally,Virola michelii Heckel wood samples(low durable species)were impregnated with the 8%concentration *** impregnated wood samples were then exposed to a soil bed *** results highlighted that the nature of the solvent used during wood maceration affects the con-tent of the obtained extractive ***-Performance Liquid Chromatography–High-resolution Mass Spectrometry(UHPLC-HrMS)analyses showed the inﬂuence of extraction parameters on the nature of the extracted *** extracts(from ethyl acetate maceration)showed good anti-fungal and anti-termite ***,the concentration in extractives had an impact on the anti-termite activity level for reti-culitermesﬂavipes and Cryptotermes *** based on W

The urgency for energy transition is evident through the increasing demand for new technologies such as water electrolysers(WEs),which have the potential to generate green hydrogen using renewable *** paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the technical capabilities of commercially available WE system *** analysis is based on publicly accessible data gathered from 28 WE manufacturers worldwide with a total of 186 products,focusing on technology types and various technical characteristics of each WE system,including capacity,footprint,hydrogen output pressure,hydrogen purity and conversion *** analysis reveals that the current WE system solutions in the market exhibit diverse and varied ***,there is a lack of standardized product specifications adopted by *** underscores the urgent need for the development of frameworks and *** such standards is crucial for enhancing clarity and understanding,facilitating efficient comparisons and selection processes,and supporting the future advancement of WE technologies and WE-enabled Power-to-X applications on a global scale.

Induced pluripotent stem cells throughout the animal kingdom:Availability and applications

Up until the mid 2000s, the capacity to generate every cell of an organism was exclusive to embryonic stem cells. In 2006, researchers Takahashi and Yamanaka developed an alternative method of generating embryonic-like stem cells from adult cells, which they coined induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Such iPSCs possess most of the advantages of embryonic stem cells without the ethical stigma associated with derivation of the latter. The possibility of generating “custom-made” pluripotent cells, ideal for patient-specific disease models, alongside their possible applications in regenerative medicine and reproduction, has drawn a lot of attention to the field with numbers of iPSC studies published growing exponentially. IPSCs have now been generated for a wide variety of species, including but not limited to, mouse, human, primate, wild felines, bovines, equines, birds and rodents, some of which still lack well-established embryonic stem cell lines. The paucity of robust characterization of some of these iPSC lines as well as the residual expression of transgenes involved in the reprogramming process still hampers the use of such cells in species preservation or medical research, underscoring the requirement for further investigations. Here, we provide an extensive overview of iPSC generated from a broad range of animal species including their potential applications and limitations.

BACKGrOUND Low vitamin D levels are associated with a more severe case of knee osteoarthritis(OA).However,there are few published reports concerning an association between vitamin D deficiency and functional status of individuals with OA and no reports about postural balance in this *** To analyze the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and severity,functional status,and balance in elderly patients with *** In this cross-sectional study,105 elderly patients with hip and knee OA were *** severity was assessed by the Kellgren-Lawrence *** functional status was assessed with the Lequesne *** balance was assessed using a force platform,and center-of-pressure parameters(velocity at anteroposterior and mediolateral axis)were used as the balance *** 25(OH)vitamin D levels were measured using a chemiluminescence *** Most of the patients(mean age:70.6±6.5 years)were female(n=78,74.3%).In the group with vitamin D deficiency,43 patients(56.6%)had severe OA,while 33 patients(43.4%)had mild or moderate OA(χ^(2) test,P=0.04).Patients with vitamin D deficiency showed a higher Lequesne index score(Mann-Whitney test,P=0.04),indicating a worse functional impairment when compared to individuals with normal vitamin D ***,patients with vitamin D deficiency had worse postural balance according to the Mann-Whitney test(P=0.03).CONCLUSION Vitamin D deficiency is associated with worse severity,functional status,and postural balance in patients with OA.

The management of water consumption in healthcare centres can have positive impacts on both the environmental performance and profitability of health *** tools assist in the decision-making process of managing the operation and maintenance of healthcare *** research aimed to integrate the empirical knowledge of experts in Healthcare Engineering and the historical data from 66 healthcare centres in a Fuzzy Cognitive *** outputs of the predictive model included water consumption,water cost,and CO_(2) emissions in healthcare facilities,along with eleven variables to discover the causes and consequences of water consumption in healthcare centres.A healthcare centre with about 12350 users,located in a city that experiences an average of 1100 heating degree days,whose facilities be moderately energy-efficient contributing over 50%with renewable energies is expected to consume 8.4 dam^(3) of water with 32.1 k€of cost,and contribute realising 30.8 ton CO_(2)eq *** use of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps for prediction can provide a high level of effectiveness in identifying the factors that contribute to water consumption and in designing key performance indicators to manage the environmental performance of healthcare *** tool is extremely effective in enhancing the performance of the management division of health systems.

Can rainfall seasonality trigger soil water repellency in a tropical riparian forest?

Though riparian areas generally have a shallow water table and higher soil moisture compared to up slope areas,climatic seasonality may trigger water repellency in tropical riparian forests,which,if persistent,could negatively affect essential ecosystem functions related to water resources protection such as reduced overland-flow,sediment transport,and nutrient *** objective of this study was to answer the following:can tropical riparian forests develop water repellency?If so,does water repellency affect infiltration on a seasonal basis?For this,water repellency and infiltration were measured in a grid of 72points during a dry and a wet month of a tropical riparian forest with a shallow water table in a region with highly marked climatic *** repellency and infiltration were significantly different between the wet and dry *** repellency affected negatively infiltration in the dry month,its effect in the wet month was *** a result,a higher infiltration capacity was observed over the wet *** research has claimed that the development and persistence of repellency in soils could promote other hydrological processes such as overland *** findings shown here demonstrate that such phenomenon does not persist longer than the dry season.

Antioxidant activity of water-soluble polysaccharide extracted from Eucalyptus cultivated in Lebanon

Objective: To extract and identify the chemical composition of the polysaccharide isolated from the Eucalyptus cultivated in Lebanon and to evaluate its antioxidant ***: The water-soluble polysaccharide was isolated from Eucalyptus leaves, and its structure was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance. The antioxidant activity of the active ingredient was screened for its radical scavenging ability using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl radical(DPPH) ***: The results of the DPPH test have shown that fucoidan, the polysaccharide isolated from Eucalyptus, exhibited almost the same antioxidant activity against DPPH$as the ascorbic acid did at 100 mg/***: This natural molecule extracted from a medicinal plant has a promising antioxidant activity and could be used in pharmaceutical and medical applications.

Multiple myeloma survival in New South Wales, Australia, by treatment era to 2020

Objective: Australia has relatively high multiple myeloma(MM) incidence and mortality rates. Advancements in MM treatment over recent decades have driven improvements in MM survival in high-income countries;however, reporting in Australia is limited. We investigated temporal trends in population-wide MM survival across 3 periods of treatment advancements in New South Wales(NSW), ***: Individuals with an MM diagnosis in the NSW Cancer registry between 1985 and 2015 with vital follow-up to 2020, were categorized into 3 previously defined treatment eras according to their diagnosis date(1985±1995, chemotherapy only;1996±2007, autologous stem cell transplantation;and 2008±2015, novel agents including proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs). Both relative survival and cause-specific survival according to Fine and Gray's competing risks cumulative incidence function were calculated by treatment era and age at ***: Overall, 11,591 individuals were included in the study, with a median age of 70 years at diagnosis. Five-year relative survival improved over the 36-year(1985±2020) study period(31.0% in 1985±1995;41.9% in 1996±2007;and 56.1% in 2008±2015). For individuals diagnosed before 70 years of age, the 5-year relative survival nearly doubled, from 36.5% in 1985±1995 to 68.5% in 2008±2015. Improvements for those > 70 years of age were less pronounced between 1985±1995 and 1996±2007;however, significant improvements were observed for those diagnosed in 2008±2015. Similar overall and age-specific patterns were observed for causespecific survival. After adjustment for gender and age at diagnosis, treatment era was strongly associated with both relative and cause-specific survival(P rvival of individuals with MM is improving in Australia with treatment advances.
