The collaborative effort of an international research team from the Early Career Psychiatrists section of the World Psychiatry Association has brought about an easy-to-use,quick and stepwise mental health care toolkit for the identification and appropriate referral of those in need of mental health care during the pandemic.This simple guide can be applied in the general outpatient setting and is catered for all healthcare professionals,regardless of their expertise within the mental health field with minimal training.It is our hope that by incorporating this toolkit into our daily clinical care during the pandemic for high-risk patients and patients with non-specific complaints,we will be able to bridge the mental health gap present in our society.

Competition among rare earth elements on sorption onto six seaweeds

Sorption has been proposed as a promising approach towards a sustainable water decontamination and recently to the recycling of rare earth elements(REE).Although living seaweed have been shown to be capable of removing REE from contaminated solutions,no studies have yet compared the effects of REE competition on sorption onto different groups of seaweed.These effects were analysed in the present study by exposing six living seaweeds(Ulva lactuca,Ulva intestinalis,Fucus spiralis,Fucus vesiculosus,Gracilaria sp.and Osmundea pinnatifida)(3 g/L,fresh weight) to mono-element and multi-element solutions of Y,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Eu,Gd,Tb and Dy(1 μmol/L).Results show a preference towards light REE in mono-element solutions,which is reduced when in competition with other REE.The competitive effect is less pronounced in heavy REE indicating that these are still able to bind to the macroalgae despite the presence of competing ions.Contrary to water content(%),seaweed specific surface area(cm^(2)/g) shows to be an important factor in the sorption of REE,since larger surface area is associated with higher removal and larger competitive effect.

This research investigates the soil conditioning effect of sugar cane fields with biochar produced from sugarcane bagasse.Its influence on the physicochemical and microbiological conditions of the soil and the agronomic performance of sugarcane seedlings was verified.To this end,the biochar from sugarcane bagasse was produced by pyrolysis in a double drum oven and mixed with soil at rates of 0,1%,3%,and 5%(in weight).The experiment was installed in a greenhouse with two evaluation periods(30 days and 60 days)and five replicates.Each pot received a pre-sprouted cane seedling,and the analysis of colony-forming units(bacteria and fungi),physicochemical characteristics of the soil,and growth and development of sugarcane were performed per pot.The biochar showed a high fixed carbon content(72%)and a specific surface area estimated by the adsorption of methylene blue of 50 m2 g−1.Furthermore,its structure is porous and contains important nutrients(e.g.,CaO,K2O,and P2O5).In the periods evaluated,the applications of the 3%and 5%(in weight)rates of biochar reduced most of the soil fertility parameters.However,the chemical analyses indicated that the sugarcane field soil collected already possessed high fertility.The microbiota was influenced,but only the application of the 3%(in weight)rate at 60 days after planting showed a significant positive effect on the number of bacteria forming units,with an increase of approximately 385%.On the other hand,no significant positive effect on sugarcane development was found.Therefore,biochar application in high-fertility sugarcane plantation soil did not result in gains for sugarcane development in the periods evaluated.

SARS-CoV-2 and hearing:An audiometric analysis of COVID-19 hospitalized patients

Purpose COVID-19 associated hearing loss is still an ongoing matter of debate.No original studies exist on audiological effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in hospitalized patients.The main objective was to determine whether SARS-CoV-2 may affect auditory function in clinically ill COVID-19 patients.Materials and methods COVID-19 patients with moderate-severe disease and without prior history of hearing abnormalities were enrolled from a tertiary referral center,and matched with controls.Participants performed an audiometric evaluation,and thresholds were compared.Results 120 ears from 60 patients were enrolled.Patients with COVID-19 showed worse mean auditory thresholds starting from 1000 Hz through higher frequencies,when compared to controls(1000 Hz:18.52±5.49 dB HL in controls vs 25.36±6.79 dB HL in COVID-19,p<0.001;2000Hz:17.50±5.57 dB HL in controls vs 21.96±7.05 dB HL in COVID-19,p=0.010;3000Hz:17.97±8.07 dB HL in controls vs 25±9.38 dB HL in COVID-19,p=0.003;4000 Hz:20.16±10.12 dB HL in controls vs 29.55±11.26 dB HL in COVID-19,p=0.001;8000 Hz:31.09±12.75 dB HL in controls vs 40.71±19.40 dB HL in COVID-19,p=0.030;Pure Tone Average:20.42±4.29 dB HL in controls vs 24.85±5.62 dB HL in COVID-19,p=0.001).Statistical significance persisted after adjusting for confounders such as age,gender and various comorbidities(p<0.05).Conclusions SARS-CoV-2 may affect hearing in COVID-19 patients with moderate-severe disease.Results are in line with the previous suggested effects of COVID-19 on auditory system.This study is expected to encourage further research on this topic.

AIM:To investigate the therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)transplanted intraperitoneally andintravenously in a murine model of colitis.METHODS:MSCs were isolated from C57BL/6 mouse adipose tissue.MSC cultures were analyzed according to morphology,cellular differentiation potential,and surface molecular markers.Experimental acute colitis was induced in C57BL/6 mice by oral administration of2%dextran sulfate sodium(DSS)in drinking water ad libitum from days 0 to 7.Colitis mice were treated with1×106 MSCs via intraperitoneal or intravenous injection on days 2 and 5.The disease activity index was determined daily based on the following parameters:weight loss,stool consistency and presence of blood in the feces and anus.To compare morphological and functional differences in tissue regeneration between different MSC injection modalities,mice were euthanized on day 8,and their colons were examined for length,weight,and histopathological changes.Inflammatory responses were determined by measuring the levels of different serum cytokines using a CBA Th1/Th2/Th17 kit.Apoptotic rates were evaluated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated d UDPbiotin nick end labeling assay.RESULTS:Intravenous infusion of MSCs was more effective than intraperitoneal treatment(P<0.001)in reducing the clinical and histopathologic severity of colitis,which includes weight loss,diarrhea and inflammation.An histological evaluation demonstrated decreased colonic inflammation based on reduced crypt loss and reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells.This therapeutic effect was most likely mediated by the down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines[interleukin(IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)];and by the up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines(IL-10 and IL-4).Intravenous transplantation alsoinduced high levels of IFN that lead to activation of the immunosuppressive activity of the MSCs,which did not occur with intraperitoneal transplantation(P=0.006).An increase in apoptotic T cells was observed after intravenous,

Technical Evaluation of Hybrid Clones of Corymbia spp. to Produce Market Pulp

This study presents hybrid clones of Corymbia spp.developed by Aperam BioEnergia as potential substitutes for Eucalyptus wood in the pulp industry.The biomass of Eucalyptus spp.was compared with that of Corymbia spp.by performing modified kraft pulping and basic density analyses.Comparisons were made by analyzing their respective mean annual increments of cellulose(MAI_(cel))and specific wood consumption(SWC),estimated using a kappa number of(19±1).The results showed that one of the hybrid clones(Corymbia citriodora×Corymbia torelliana,ID 4)had higher basic wood density,higher screened yield,better MAI_(cel#k19),and lower SWC than the other samples,reaching values of 0.608 t/m^(3),54.1%,24.6 ADt/ha/year(i.e.,air dry ton/hectare/year),and 2.74 m^(3)/ADt,respectively.Consequently,clone ID 4 had the highest MAI_(cel)/SWC ratio score(8.98).Given its high forest productivity and low industrial cost compared with other samples,as well as its advantages over Eucalyptus spp.wood,we concluded that clone ID 4 has great potential as an alternative biomass for pulp production.

Objective To evaluate the effect of a one-time cash transfer of$C1000 in people who are unable to physically distance due to insufficient income.Design Open-label,multi-centre,randomised superiority trial.Setting Seven primary care sites in Ontario,Canada;six urban sites associated with St.Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and one in Manitoulin Island.Participants 392 individuals who reported trouble affording basic necessities due to disruptions related to COVID-19.Intervention After random allocation,participants either received the cash transfer of$C1000(n=196)or physical distancing guidelines alone(n=196).Main outcome measures The primary outcome was the maximum number of symptoms consistent with COVID-19 over 14 days.Secondary outcomes were meeting clinical criteria for COVID-19,SARS-CoV-2 presence,number of close contacts,general health and ability to afford basic necessities.Results The primary outcome of number of symptoms reported by participants did not differ between groups after 2 weeks(cash transfer,mean 1.6 vs 1.9,ratio of means 0.83;95%CI 0.56 to 1.24).There were no statistically significant effects on secondary outcomes of the meeting COVID-19 clinical criteria(7.9%vs 12.8%;risk difference−0.05;95%CI−0.11 to 0.01),SARS-CoV-2 presence(0.5%vs 0.6%;risk difference 0.0095%CI−0.02 to 0.02),mean number of close contacts(3.5 vs 3.7;rate ratio 1.10;95%CI 0.83 to 1.46),general health very good or excellent(60%vs 63%;risk difference−0.0395%CI−0.14 to 0.08)and ability to make ends meet(52%vs 51%;risk difference 0.0195%CI−0.10 to 0.12).Conclusions A single cash transfer did not reduce the COVID-19 symptoms or improve the ability to afford necessities.Further studies are needed to determine whether some groups may benefit from financial supports and to determine if a higher level of support is beneficial.Trial registration number NCT04359264.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder and complex mechanisms are involved in the physiopathology of Alzheimer’s disease.However,there is data suggesting that inflammation plays a role in its development and progression.Indeed,some non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs,such as meloxicam,which act by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 have been used as neuroprotective agents in different neurodegenerative disease models.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of co-nanoencapsulated curcumin and meloxicam in lipid core nanocapsules(LCN)on cognitive impairment induced by amyloid-beta peptide injection in *** were prepared by the nanoprecipitation method.Male Swiss mice received a single intracerebroventricular injection of amyloid-beta peptide aggregates(fragment 25–35,3 nmol/3μL)or vehicle and were subsequently treated with curcumin-loaded LCN(10 mg/kg)or meloxicam-loaded LCN(5 mg/kg)or meloxicam+curcumin-co-loaded LCN(5 and 10 mg/kg,respectively).Treatments were given on alternate days for 12 days(i.e.,six doses,once every 48 hours,by intragastric gavage).Our data showed that amyloid-beta peptide infusion caused long-term memory deficits in the inhibitory avoidance and object recognition tests in mice.In the inhibitory avoidance test,both meloxicam and curcumin formulations(oil or co-loaded LCN)improved amyloid-beta-induced memory impairment in mice.However,only meloxicam and curcumin-co-loaded LCN attenuated non-aversive memory impairment in the object recognition test.Moreover,the beneficial effects of meloxicam and curcuminco-loaded LCN could be explained by the anti-inflammatory properties of these drugs through cortical cyclooxygenase-2 downregulation.Our study suggests that the neuroprotective potential of meloxicam and curcumin co-nanoencapsulation is associated with cortical cyclooxygenase-2 modulation.This study was approved by the Committee on Care and Use of Experimental Animal Resources,the Federal University of Pampa,Brazil(approval No.02-2015)on April 16,2015.

Comparison between Non-Gaussian Puff Model and a Model Based on a Time-Dependent Solution of Advection-Diffusion Equation

A comparison between a non-Gaussian puff model and an advanced time-dependent model to simulate the pollutant dispersion in the Planetary Boundary Layer is presented. The puff model is based on a general technique for solving the K-equation, using the truncated Gram-Charlier expansion (type A) of the concentration field and finite set equations for the corresponding moments. The other model (named ADMM: Analytical Dispersion Multilayers Model) is an semi- analytical solution to the time-dependent two-dimensional advection-diffusion equation based on a discretization of the PBL in N sub-layers;in each sub-layers the advection-diffusion equation is solved by the Laplace transform technique, considering an average value for eddy diffusivity and the wind speed. A preliminary performance evaluation is shown in the case of continuous emission from an elevated source in a variable boundary layer. Both models were able to correctly reproduce the concentration field measured and so to be used as operative air pollution models.

Successful double fertilization and subsequent seed development in flowering plants requires the delivery of two sperm cells, transported by a pollen tube, into the embryo sac of an ovule. The embryo sac cells tightly control synergid cell death, and as a result the polyspermy block. Arabinogalactan proteins are highly glycosylated proteins thought to be involved in several steps of the reproductive process. We show that JAGGER, Arabinogalactan Protein 4, is an important molecule necessary to prevent the growth of multiple pollen tubes into one embryo sac in Arabidopsis thaliana. In jagger, an AGP4 knockout mutant, the pistils show impaired pollen tube blockage as a consequence of the survival of the persistent synergid. JAGGER seems to be involved in the signaling pathway that leads to a blockage of pollen tube attraction. Our results shed light on the mechanism responsible for preventing polyspermy in Arabidopsis and for safe- guarding successful fertilization of all ovules in one pistil, ensuring seed set and the next generation.
