Background:Animal models are widely used in scientific research in order to obtain information from a whole organism under a specific set of experimental *** lineages of mice have been used to investigate diseases and new therapeutic strategies,and,consequently,hematological and biochemical tests in these laboratory animals are essential to validate scientific *** study seeks to establish reference values for hematological and biochemical parameters of four lineages of ***:We evaluated the hematological and biochemical profiles of 20 males and 20 females from the lineages Swiss(heterogeneous),BALB/c and C57BL/6(isogenic),and B6D2F1(hybrid),totaling 160 *** were standardized using the systems pocH-100iV Diff™for 19 hematological parameters and VITROS®350 for 12 biochemical ***:Results are shown as means and standard deviation,grouped by lineage and *** the values obtained in this study with the values from previous studies,some variations were detected,which could be explained by differences in methodologies or individual ***:Thus our study shows that knowledge and disclosure of the values of physiological parameters of laboratory animals is necessary,and emphasises the importance of considering variations influenced by gender,lineage and genotype in the choice of the best experimental model.

Modelling the role of ground-true riparian vegetation for providing regulating services in a Mediterranean watershed

Intensive agricultural and industrial activities are often considered major sources of water ***,riparian vegetation(RV)is increasingly being promoted as a solution to balance the potentially adverse effects that agriculture may have on water ***,existing RV is often overlook in recent modelling efforts,failing to capture the current amount of ecosystem services ***,we used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool ecohydrological model to simulate the influence of ground-true RV on i)nutrient(nitrate and total phosphorus)and sediment exports from agricultural areas and ii)its effect for in-stream *** results are further compared against a set of hypothetical scenarios of different RV widths and different *** results point to a great rele-vance of existing RV in controlling in-stream concentration of sediments and nutrients where pressure from agriculture is highest,preventing them to surpass limits set in the EU Water Framework *** the other hand,in areas with industry discharges,the role of RV is limited and model results suggest that restoring RV would have limited *** illustrate how existing RV may already provide strong but not acknowledged water quality regulation services,how these services can differ substantially between nearby streams,and that effective strategies to improve water quality using RV must acknowledge existing patterns of vegetation,land use and contamination sources.

Record of hydrothermal activity in the Yuhuang hydrothermal field and its implications for the Southwest Indian Ridge:evidence from sulfide chronology

The Yuhuang hydrothermal field(YHF)is located between the Indomed and Gallieni fracture zones near the top of the off-axis slope on the south rift wall of Segment 29 on the ultraslow Southwest Indian Ridge(SWIR).Previous studies have shown that sulfides in the YHF formed during different mineralization episodes and the YHF has the greatest potential for the formation of large-scale seafloor massive sulfide ***,the sulfide chronology and hydrothermal activity of the YHF remain poorly *** this study,mineralogical analyses and 230Th/U dating were *** activity may start about(35.9±2.3)ka from the southwest part of the YHF and may cease about(708±81)a ago from the northeast part of the *** 74 nonzero chronological data from hydrothermal sulfide samples provide the first quantitative characterization of the spatial and temporal history along the *** activity in the SWIR has been relatively active over the past20 *** contrast,between 40 ka and 100 ka,hydrothermal activity was relatively infrequently and short in *** maximum activity occurred at 15–11 ka,9–7 ka,6–0.2 *** was a slight positive correlation between the maximal age and estimated surface area or estimated *** minimum mass accumulation rate of YHF is about 278 t/a,which is higher than most HFs related to ultramafic *** ultraslow spreading SWIR has the greatest potential to form large-scale seafloor massive sulfides(SMS)*** results of this study provide new insights into the metallogenic mechanism of hydrothermal sulfides along ultraslow-spreading ridges.

Functional and patient-reported outcomes of bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA): A prospective case series study

Objective:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional and patient-reported outcomes,and their correlation,after percutaneous bone-anchored hearing aid(BAHA)***:A prospective study was conducted between January 2018 and December 2020 in a tertiary care *** adult patients who were implanted with a percutaneous BAHA device during this evaluation period were included in the *** auditory function and patients reported outcome measures(PROMs)were assessed in the preoperative period and 6 months after the implant *** PROMs included a generic form(Medical Outcome Study 36 Short Form Healthy Survey(MOS SF-36)),and three disease-specific forms(Hearing Handicap Inventory(HHI),Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life Scale(SADLS),and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI)).Results:Twenty-two patients with an average age of 53 years were included in the *** overall functional gain with the BAHA in sound-field pure tone average(PTA)was 29 dB,with no statistically significant differences according to surgical indication(F(3,18)=2.319,p=0.110).The greater the preoperative air-bone gap,the greater the functional gain obtained(r=0.505,p<0.05).In the PROMs,we found a significant improvement in HHI scores(p<0.005)and a significant increase in overall SADLS scores(p<0.05)with the use of percutaneous BAHA *** did not verify any statistically significant correlation between functional and PROMs ***:The BAHA is a safe and effective alternative hearing rehabilitation option in selected *** PROMs results prove patient's overall satisfaction.

Intervention in the Loneliness of the Elderly What Strategies, Challenges and Rewards？

The new challenges that the phenomenon of demographic aging imposes on society in general, and health services in particular, can impact active and healthy aging. The project was implemented for two years （2012/2013） and aimed to combat loneliness in the elderly, which constitutes an obstacle to healthy and active aging. Decrease the sense of loneliness of individuals from 65 to 84 years of age, the project was made by using the health planning methodology, starting with a descriptive study （health diagnosis of the independent elderly population） followed by the development, implementation and evaluation of a community intervention project, which included home visits to the elderly, assessment of the level of loneliness in two different times （UCLA scale） and various intergenerational activities of social life （dancing, walking, online courses, games...） using a cross-section of partnerships and community involvement. There was a decrease from 62.8% to 41.9% in the reported overall feeling of loneliness of independent individuals between the ages of 65 and 84 years of age. There was an increase from 50.0% to 86.4% of seniors who now have dreams/life projects. The reduction of social and emotional isolation resulted in the promotion of social networks, which not only encouraged social interaction but also considered the elderly who live alone. The health gains arising from it are evidenced in contributing more proactively and the improvement of the quality of life in the elderly community.

Soil contamination by toxic trace metal elements,like barium(Ba),may stimulate various undesirable changes in the metabolic activity of *** plant responses are fast and with,direct or indirect,generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS).To cope with the stress imposed by the ROS production,plants developed a dual cellular system composed of enzymatic and non-enzymatic players that convert ROS,and their by-products,into stable nontoxic *** assess the Ba stress response of two Brassicaceae species(Brassica juncea,a glycophyte,and Cakile maritime,a halophyte),plants were exposure to different Ba concentrations(0,100,200,300 and 500µM).The plants response was evaluated through their morphology and development,the determination of plant leaves antioxidant enzymatic activities and by the production of plants secondary *** indicated that the two Brassicaceae species have the ability to survive in an environment containing Ba(even at 500µM).The biomass production of *** was slightly affected whereas an increase in biomass *** was *** stress imposed by Ba activated the antioxidant defense system in the two species,noticed by the changes in the leaves activity of catalase(CAT),ascorbate peroxidase(APX)and guaicol peroxidase(GPX),and of the secondary metabolites,through the production of total phenols and *** enzymatic response was not similar within the two plant species:CAT and APX seem to have a more important role against the oxidative stress in *** while in *** is ***,total phenols and flavonoids production was more significant in the plants aerial part than in the roots,of the both *** the two Brassicaceae species response was different,in both plants catalytic and non-catalytic transformation of ROS occurs,and both were able to overcome the Ba toxicity and prevent the cell damage.

Nutritional Quality and Effect on Disease Prevention of Vegetables

Vegetables have remarkable nutritional and health benefits. There are good reasons to include vegetables in human diet since they are enriched in bioactive compounds and by this reason they may help reduce the risk of some diseases. In this paper it was analyzed the nutrition quality and effect on disease prevention of vegetables. Each vegetable family and each vegetable contain a unique combination of bioactive compounds. The health benefit of vegetables should not be linked to one type of vegetable. It is presented some experimental research evidences that vegetables exert anti-oxidative, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic and cardiovascular disease lowering effects. The mechanism by which vegetable bioactive compounds decrease the risk of some of these diseases is complex and sometimes unknown.

Nutritional Quality and Health Benefits of Vegetables:A Review

Vegetables are considered essential for well-balanced diets since they supply vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and phytochemicals. Each vegetable group contains an unique combination and amount of these phytonutriceuticals, which distinguishes them from other groups and vegetables whithin their own group. In the daily diet vegetables have been strongly associated with improvement of gastrointestinal health, good vision, and reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, chronic diseases such as diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Some phytochemicals of vegetables are strong antioxidants and are thought to reduce the risk of chronic disease by protecting against free radical damage, by modifying metabolic activation and detoxification of carcinogens, or even by influencing processes that alter the course of tumor cells. All the vegetables may offer protection to humans against chronic diseases. Nutrition is both a quantity and a quality issue, and vegetables in all their many forms ensure an adequate intake of most vitamins and nutrients, dietary fibers, and phytochemicals which can bring a much-needed measure of balance back to diets contributing to solve many of these nutrition problems. The promotion of healthy vegetable products has coincided with a surging consumer interested in the healthy functionality of food. Because each vegetable contains a unique combination of phytonutriceuticals, a great diversity of vegetables should be eaten to ensure that individual’s diet includes a combination of phytonutriceuticals and to get all the health benefits. This article make a review and discusses the nutritional quality and health benefits of the major groups of vegetables. More interdisciplinary work is required that involves nutritional and food scientists as well as others from biomedical fields to ascertain the thrue function of specific phytonutriceuticals.

Application of Laplace Transform for a Gas-Liquid-Solid Trickle Bed Reactor by Using the Tracer Technique

Experimental evaluation and dynamic modelling were presented for a liquid flow (H2O + NaOH tracer) on solid particles in a trickle bed reactor. One-dimensional dynamic mathematical model has been described to study the gas-liquid-solid process in which the liquid phase with the NaOH tracer is treated as a continuum. The physical model has been analyzed, including the formulation of initial and boundary conditions and the description of the solution methodology. An experimental setup to measure the concentrations of the NaOH tracer has been performed. The concentration measurements of this NaOH tracer have been performed in a fixed be reactor on trickling flow of the liquid phase for a range of operating conditions. The axial dispersion (Dax) of the liquid phase, liquid-solid mass transfer (kLS) coefficient and partial wetting efficiency (fe) were chosen as the hydrodynamic parameters of the proposed mathematical model. Such parameters have been optimized with experimental measurents of the NaOH tracer at the exit of the trickle-bed reactor. The optimized parameters (Dax, kLS, and fe) were calculated simultaneously by using the theoretical model with minimization of the objective function. Results of the proposed mathematical model have been presented and compared as of the two experimental cases. These hydrodynamic parameters were fitted by means of the empirical correlations.
