Can small-scale altitudinal gradients predict spatial and temporal patterns in tropical forests?

In tropical montane forests,compositional and structural changes are commonly driven by broad-scale altitudinal ***,given the lack of knowledge on small-scale vegetation changes and temporal dynamics,we address the effects of small-scale variations in soil and altitude on tree community structure,temporal dynamics and phylogenetic diversity in a semi-deciduous tropical forest of the Atlantic Forest Domain,southeastern *** 2010 and 2015 we sampled thirty plots of 400 m^(2),set up along an altitudinal gradient between 1000 and 1500 m a.s.I..In each plot,we collected soil samples for chemical and textural *** fitted linear models to test the effects of altitude and soil on community dynamics and phylogenetic *** and soil explained the spatial variation in number of individuals and phylogenetic diversity *** lower to higher altitudes,we found decreasing fertility,increasing tree density and decreasing phylogenetic *** significantly influenced the increases in total biomass(from 240.9 to 255.4 t ha^(-1))and individual biomass(from 0.15 to 0.17 t)recorded in the *** while community temporal dynamics had rates of 1.96%for mortality,1.02%for recruitment,1.61%for biomass loss and 2.81%for biomass gain,none of them were explained by altitude or *** species substitution averaged0.1 in the ***,these results suggest that the small-scale variations in altitude and soil likely determine the conditions and resources that drive community assembly and structure,which are expressed by spatial variations along the altitudinal *** the same time,temporal patterns were not influenced by altitude-related environmental variation,resulting in a similar dynamic behaviour across the gradient,suggesting that broad-scale factors may play a more important role than local ones.

Aims We aimed at disentangling the effects of spatial distance,current and past environmental dissimilarity,and their combinations on tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover by addressing the following questions:(i)Is tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover related to the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity?(ii)Does tree community taxonomic and phylogenetic turnover respond to paleoclimate(Last Glacial Maximum and Mid-Holocene)?Methods The study was carried out in 14 Atlantic rainforest sites in Brazil(20.4 ha sampled)containing 615 tree species from 83 plant *** obtained plot-level geographic coordinates and soil variables and site-level bioclimatic variables in the current,Mid-Holocene and Last Glacial *** used structural equation models with a distance-based approach to(i)test the direct effects of spatial distance and environmental dissimilarity and(ii)test the indirect effects of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic(Bray–Curtis distance)and phylogenetic turnover(Comdist and Comdistnt distances).Important Findings Our results suggest a weak indirect effect of spatial distance via environmental dissimilarity on taxonomic and phylogenetic *** community turnover was driven by the direct effects of neutral,niche-based and historical ***,we inferred that the paleoclimate(historical processes)promoted the selection of the clades that gave rise to the current flora,while spatial distances(neutral processes)limited the dispersal range of species from the regional pool and environmental conditions(niche-based processes)locally selected the taxa that are able to persist.

Although nanocomposites have recently attracted special interest in the tissue engineering area,due to their potential to reinforce scaffolds for hard tissues applications,a number of variables must be set prior to any clinical *** manuscript addresses the evaluation of thermo-mechanical properties and of cell proliferation of cellulose nanocrystals(CNC),poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)(PBAT),poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL)films and their bionanocomposites with 2 wt% of CNC obtained by casting *** nanocrystals extracted from Balsa wood by acid hydrolysis were used as a reinforcing phase in PBAT and PCL matrix *** films and pure CNC at different concentrations were cultured with osteoblasts MG-63 and the cell proliferation was assessed by AlamarBlue?*** thermal-mechanical properties of the films were evaluated by dynamic-mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA).It was found by DMTA that the CNC acted as reinforcing *** addition of CNCs in the PBAT and PCL matrices induced higher storage moduli due to the reinforcement effects of *** cell viability results showed that neat CNC favored osteoblast proliferation and both PBAT and PCL films incorporated with CNC were biocompatible and supported cell proliferation along *** nature of the polymeric matrix or the presence of CNC practically did not affect the cell proliferation,confirming they have no in vitro *** features make cellulose nanocrystals a suitable candidate for the reinforcement of biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering and biomedical applications.

Addition of hip exercises to treatment of patellofemoral pain syndrome:A meta-analysis

AIM:To determine if the addition of hip-strengthening exercises decreases pain and improves function in patients with patellofemoral pain ***:The authors completed a systematic reviewsearching eight databases(i.e.,Pub Med,Cochrane,CINHAL,MEDLINE,Sports Discus,EMBASE,APTA Hooked on Evidence,and PEDro).Two independent reviewers screened and excluded studies if they did not meet the following inclusion criteria:subjects had a primary diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome(PFPS),intervention group included hip-strengthening exercises,control group included a traditional physical therapy intervention,study included outcome measures of pain and/or function,study used a randomized controlled trial design,PEDro score was ≥ 7,and study was published in a peer-reviewed *** outcome measures were subjective scales of pain and *** measures were converted to standardized mean difference [effect size(ES)],and a random-effects model was used to calculate the overall ***:Two hundred eighty-three studies were screened for inclusion in our *** studies were deemed suitable for data extraction and analysis.A total of 426 subjects were used in the nine ***,there was a significant positive effect of hip-strengthening exercises on measures of pain and function in subjects with PFPS(ES = 0.94,P = 0.00004).None of the individual studies had a negative ES,with study ES ranging from 0.35 to *** of the high degree of between-study variance(I2 = 76%;Q = 34.0,P < 0.001),subgroup meta-analyses and meta-regressions were *** of the potential moderator variables that were investigated(e.g.,outcome type,hip region targeted,duration of treatment) could explain a significant amount of the between-study variance in ES(P ≥ 0.23).CONCLUSION:Overall,the addition of hip-strengthening exercises to traditional physical therapy produced greater improvements in measures of pain and function.

Prevalence of Decreased Susceptibility of Cryptococcus spp. Isolates to Fluconazole in Urban Sources of Presidente Prudente

The genus Cryptococcus is composed of encapsulated yeasts that have the ability to infect and cause disease in humans, as Cryptococcus gattii/Cryptococcus neoformans species complex. Facing the current research panel, few studies about cryptococcosis and epidemiological data have been carded out in the western region of Sao Paulo state. This study aimed to verify the occurrence of Cryptococcus spp. In public areas of the city of Presidente Prudente, using pigeon droppings and tree hollows as an environmental source. The samples were identified by conventional mycological methods. Were collected 54 samples from pigeon droppings and 62 samples from tree hollows of the genus Licania. And of these samples, 47 （87.0%） and 14 （22.5%） had positive growth of yeast from pigeon droppings and tree hollows, respectively. Cryptococcus was identified in 11 （20.4%） of the samples from pigeon droppings and 3 （21.4%） of those from tree hollows. The following species were identified： Cryptococcus neoformans （7.15%）, Cryptococcus laurentti （14.28%）, and Cryptococcus albidus （78.57%）. Decreased susceptibility to fluconazole was observed for some isolates. Fluconazole exhibited a limited in vitro activity, particularly against Cryptococcus albidus and Cryptococcus laurentii. Identification and susceptibility testing of Cryptococcus spp. should be performed on a routine basis in view of their unpredictable susceptibility profiles.

Characterization of Stone Slurry Waste for Reutilization Purposes as Building Construction Material

Brazil is the 4th biggest dimension stone producer and the 7th greatest exporter. Due to its large stone production, Brazil faces a challenge, which is to find appropriate destination to the huge volume of generated waste throughout the process, mostly slurry from sawing process. Predominantly, Brazilian production comes from the state of Espirito Santo. In this region, frequently the slurry waste generated is stocked in industries own area or even dumped on unauthorized open sites. Researchers search for applications to the slurry stone waste as an industrial raw material. However, a gap persists between the results already achieved and a methodology to rational and economical affordable application. This paper aims to analyze physical, chemical and mineralogical the powder wastes produced by conventional metallic blades loom （DSPW-CL） and diamond wire loom （DSPW-DL） during stone processing to promote its valorization as a building construction material. This could mitigate dimension stone industry impact and improve life quality around the areas of production.

Presence of c.3956del C mutation in familial adenomatous polyposis patients from Brazil

AIM: To characterize APC gene mutations and correlate them with patient phenotypes in individuals diagnosed with familial adenomatous polyposis(FAP) in northern Brazil. METHODS: A total of 15 individuals diagnosed with FAP from 5 different families from the north of Brazil were analyzed in this study. In addition to patients with histopathological diagnosis of FAP,family members who had not developed the disease were also tested in order to identify mutations and for possible genetic counseling. All analyzed patients or their guardians signed a consent form approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Jo?o de Barros Barreto University Hospital(Belem,Brazil). DNA extracted from the peripheral blood of a member of each of the affected families was subjected to direct sequencing. The proband of each family was sequenced to identify germline mutations using the Ion Torrent platform. To validate the detected mutations,Sanger sequencing was also performed. The samples from all patients were also tested for the identification of mutations by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction using the amplification refractory mutation system. RESULTS: Through interviews with relatives and a search of medical records,it was possible to construct genograms for three of the five families included in the study. All 15 patients from the five families with FAP exhibited mutations in the APC gene,and all mutations were detected in exon 15 of the APC gene. In addition to the patients with a histological diagnosis of FAP,family members without disease symptoms showed the mutation in the APC gene. In the present study,we detected two of the three most frequent germline mutations in the literature: the mutation at codon 1309 and the mutation at codon 1061. The presence of c.3956 del C mutation was found in all families from this study,and suggests that this mutation was introduced in the population of the State of Pará through ancestor immigration(i.e.,a de novo mutation that arose

Effect of Acai Powder and Polydextrose on Bread Quality Using Surface Response

The aim of this study was to develop a new bread formulation from different amounts of acai powder and polydextrose incorporated into wheat flour on bread technological properties. The formulations were developed using the central composite rotational design and having as dependent variables specific volume, hardness, crumb color and image analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using multiple regression and response surface. The results showed that the inclusion of powdered acai and polydextrose in bread formulations reduces the specific volume and alveoli number and increases the browning and hardness of the bread. However, values of this addition （30 g/100 g） were found that did not promote significant quality reduction and the scanning electron microscopy （SEM） showed minimal damage to the gluten network at this level of incorporation.

Gastric Gist as Cause of High Digestive Hemorrhage

Introduction: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) occurrence is uncommon and usually manifested by nonspecific signs and symptoms, which hinders its reasoning as a diagnostic hypothesis. The objective is to report a case of female GIST with curative treatment through video-laparoscopy with partial gastrectomy. Case report: A 61-year-old female patient attended the Luiz Gioseffi Jannuzzi School Hospital (HELGJ) emergency room, with a sudden onset of upper gastrointestinal bleeding with hemodynamic instability. After stabilization, she was admitted for diagnostic investigation, showing sub-epithelial lesion of antrum in upper digestive endoscopy (UDE) and solid-cystic mass in the gastric antrum to computed tomography (CT). The conduct was the video laparoscopy surgical approach with partial gastrectomy. The histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of the surgical specimen showed a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) in a gastric antrum of low grade of malignancy, positive e-Kit and mycotic index (50 cga) Discussion: Compared to the scarce reports in literature, the case described presented typical epidemiology, but the clinical picture was not the most incident. Conclusions: Given the rarity of this pathology cases, it is essential to report these in order to elucidate the specificities and also to discuss diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
