Glycine supplementation reduces the severity of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in hamsters

Objective: Oral mucositis (OM) is a devastating toxicity associated with cytotoxic cancer therapy. The OM pathogenesis and the complex interactions occur in response to tissue insult. Application of this evolving model has aided in the development of mechanistically based therapies for the prevention and treatment of mucositis. The present study was to assess the effects of glycine supplementation on chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Methods: In a hamster cheek pouch model of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis, one group of 20 animals received systemic glycine supplementation for 7 days, while another similar control group did not. Clinical mucositis severity and neutrophil infiltrate (on histology) were assessed by blinded examiners. Free radical production was measured as malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Results: As compared to control animals, glycine-treated animals demonstrated a highly significant reduction in clinical severity of oral mucositis, neutrophil infiltrate, and MDA levels (p < 0.001 for all). Conclusions: Glycine supplementation reduces the severity of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis in an animal model. This effect is at least partly mediated through inhibition of the inflammatory response and reduced production of damaging free radicals.

Intimate partner violence(IPV)is simultaneously assumed as a serious crime and a major public health issue,having recurrences as one of its main characteristics and,consequently,re-entries of some alleged offenders in the criminal justice system(CJS).The main goal of this study is to assess if in cases of female victims of IPV,violence decreases after the first entry of the alleged offender in the CJS.A retrospective study was performed based on the analysis of police reports of alleged cases of IPV during a 4-year *** final sample(n=1488)was divided into two groups according to the number of entries in the CJS(single or multiple)followed by a comparative *** suggest that violence decreases after the first entry of alleged offenders in the ***-entries were found in only 15.5%of the cases but they were accountable for 3.3 times more crimes on ***,victims of recidivism presented more injuries and required more medical ***,a small group of alleged offenders seems to be more violent and accountable for most of the IPV crimes registered in the CJS suggesting that regardless of legal sanctions aiming to deter violence,these measures may not be enough for a certain group of *** study sustains the need for a predictive model to quantify the risk of repeated IPV cases within the Portuguese population.

Climatic and Physiographic Variables to Evaluate Culex pipiens s.l. Risk and Habitat

Using a geographic information system (GIS), the relations between a georeferenced data set of Culex pipiens s.l. collected in Portugal mainland during seven years (2006-2012) and meteorological and physiographic parameters are evaluated. This work is one of the results of a long-term surveillance program of pernicious insects that act as vectors of various diseases;its focus is on the possibility of prevention that can be achieved with abundance data. The focus on Culex pipiens is justified by its abundance and its competence as a vector for numerous health issues. The cumulative distribution of monthly captures by each meteorological parameter allows to compute thresholds corresponding to mosquito massive presence related to 90% of the captures. Using the weather parameters measured in the network of weather stations across the country, a monthly average of each parameter of interest (temperature, humidity, etc.) is computed and an interpolation of the results is made to produce raster maps corresponding to each month. The previously obtained thresholds are applied to each map, producing spatial masks with the relevant zones for each parameter. The intersection of the various masks for each month shows the most densely populated area of Culex, and the ensemble allows us to observe the evolution of mosquito presence through the critical season, which is from May to October at these latitudes. In parallel, mosquito abundance data are related to physiographic parameters. The relative distribution of female mosquitoes across land cover types in each month allows identifying which classes and seasons are most relevant. Orthometric altitude related to the presence of 90% of the catches shows the limits reached by mosquitoes in each month. Evaluation of the Use of Inertial Platform for the Generation of Cartography

This study aims to analyze the quality of positioning orthophoto generated through the technique of direct georeferencing using metric digital camera system coupled to the laser system, and both systems were aided inertial navigation platform. For this, we compared the coordinates obtained in 16 control points collected in the field with dual-frequency GNSS （global navigation satellite system） receiver with those obtained in the orthophoto, flight conducted in June 2009 on the campus of the State University of Campinas--UNICAMP, using a medium format digital camera and laser system, with which we obtained images with a spatial resolution of 0.15 m. Taking into account the pattern accuracy cartographic used in Brazil, it is concluded that the products produced have a standard accuracy ＂A＂ to 1：2,000 scale, which represents the best quality level, both for planimetric as for altimetry, and that the procedure reached results consistent with cartographic products in 1：2,000 scale, representing a reduction of steps in the mapping process, necessary for the preparation of cartographic databases with reduction of time for preparation of design basis large civil engineering projects, such as roads, railways, studies of urban road systems, power plants and other infrastructure systems needed to develop the country.

Extramedullary Hematopoiesis Mimicking a Neoplasm in a Goeldi＇s Monkey （Callimico goeldii）

Extramedullary hematopoiesis consists in the appearance and proliferation of hematopoietic cells outside the bone marrow. In this article, the authors describe a case of hepatosplenic hematopoiesis in a 9-year-old, male Goeldi＇s monkey concurrent with a Calodium hepaticum infestation, belonging to the Lisbon＇s Zoo primate collection （Portugal）. Lesions were identified upon necropsy after euthanasia due to the presence of an apparently non-excisable, metastatic aortic mass. Histopathological analysis of samples taken was carried out and immunohistochemical staining was used to characterize the cellular population involved, confirming the diagnosis of extramedullary hematopoiesis. To the best of the authors＇ knowledge, this is the first report of hepatosplenic extramedullary hematopoiesis in a Goeldi＇s monkey.

AVL System with Smart Transmission Rate

The use of AVL （automatic vehicle locator） systems has increased considerably. By using an AVL system, it is possible to know vehicle positions at the dispatch center, which allows the use of several applications, such as safety and security, logistics, and emergency response. High communication and data storage costs, however, lead to a low position update rate with the AVL products available, causing poor track representation, and making the route determined by the vehicle in urban areas almost illegible. This paper proposes a new approach by using intelligent techniques to choose the best position update moment to improve track representations. The principle underlying these techniques is based on vehicle status analysis （speed, direction and timing）, which tries to determine when a position update is required, in order to better represent the path that a vehicle has traced, thus avoiding excessive communication and data storage. Therefore, the better the correspondence between the traced track and the real track followed by the vehicle, the greater the added value offered by system applications. This enhancement to the representation of the track allows the creation of new applications in the realm of AVL systems, particularly for situations where accuracy plays an important role.

Strategies for Communicating with Deaf Patients in the Public Physical Rehabilitation Unit in the Central South Region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Deaf people face communication difficulties in health units because of the lack of preparedness of health care professionals to deal with these patients. Objective: To identify how physical rehabilitation professionals associated with a regional public unit in the south central region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil interact with deaf patients. Method: Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 18. Results: Results showed that: 15.1% (5) of the team members did not know the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and required help in their interaction with deaf patients;12.1% (4) never assisted deaf patients;18.2% (6) used writing and gestures;21.2% (7) resorted to lip-reading or gestures;3.1% (1) spoke slowly;6.1% (2) used mime;15.1% (5) used the Brazilian Sign Language;9.1% (3) did not respond. Conclusion: Most of these professionals are not prepared to satisfactorily interact with deaf patients. They use improvised strategies to assist the deaf clientele, demonstrating that the planning and implementation of regular courses in sign language are fundamental in order to assist these patients effectively.

Do Cytokines Play a Role in Predicting Some Features and Outcome in Infective Endocarditis?

Objective: This study aimed to measure the serum concentrations of several cytokines in patients with infective endocarditis (IE), and correlate them with the C-reactive protein serum levels, echocardiographic findings and infecting microorganisms. Methods: Forty-five patients with definite IE according to the Duke’s criteria were included in the study. Ten healthy blood donors formed the control group. Serum levels of interleukin (IL) 1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were measured and compared between the groups, and also with some clinical and laboratory parameters of IE. Results: Patients with IE had significantly higher serum concentrations of the inflammatory mediators than the control patients. Median IL-12 and IL-1β levels were higher in staphylococcal than streptococcal IE. Except for TNF-α, the levels of all the other cytokines correlated with the C-reactive protein concentrations. In multivariate analysis, IL-10 and IL-12 serum levels remained as independent factors associated with the C-reactive protein concentrations. There was a significant correlation between IL-10 concentration and vegetation length. Conclusion: The inflammatory serum cytokines levels were elevated in IE in comparison to healthy controls. C-reactive protein concentrations correlated with cytokines levels. IL-1β and IL-12 serum concentrations were higher in staphylococcal when compared to streptococcal IE. IL-10 levels were associated with vegetation size.
