The use of stem cells has been proposed as an alternative treatment for certain neurodegenerative disorders. It has also been suggested that in the pre-differentiated state, stem cells might provide a better therapeutic option than cells that are undifferentiated or fully differentiated. The purpose of this study was to develop a protocol aimed at reducing the incubation time required to induce the conversion of rat mesenchymal stem cells into immature dopaminergic neurons. Stem cells obtained from rat bone marrow were incubated in a control or induction media for 2-24 h. Cells incubated for 24 h in induction medium demonstrated an increase on the levels of the neuronal protein markers nestin, glial fibrillary acid protein, and β-tubulin III, as well as increases in the expression of Pax3, EN1, Thy1.1, and GEF10 genes. This manuscript presents evidence that adult mesenchymal cells are capable to respond, in a short time period, to a neuroinduction medium, and give raise to pre-differentiated neuron like cells representing an alternative for Parkinson disease cell therapy transplantation.

The efficacy of oxfendazole(OFZ) on Taenia hydatigena metacestodes, also called Cysticercus tenuicollis(C. tenuicollis), was studied in 648 raising pigs. This study was performed in Tumbes Department in Peru, an endemic area for cysticercosis. Pigs were randomized in two groups; untreated group(n = 142) did not receive any treatment and treated group(n = 506) received OFZ treatment at a single dose of 30 mg/kg body *** months after treatment, the pigs were necropsied. The prevalence of infection by C. tenuicollis among the pigs was 27.5%(39/142) and 2.0%(10/506) in untreated and treated groups, respectively. Untreated group was infested only with viable cysts, whereas treated group had no viable cysts. All the cysts found in treated group presented degeneration, with a thick membrane, and they contained milky fluid and fibrous tissue. A single dose of OFZ was effective against C. tenuicollis, thus providing an alternative drug for controlling this parasite in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Low-frequency and high-risk situations, such as neonatal resuscitation, are the ideal targets for simulation-based learning. The aim of this paper is to present the structure of our internal neonatal resuscitation training program, using a realistic, simulated delivery room, and to present the participants' opinions about teamwork, emotional stress, and their subjective ability to face a resuscitation. METHODS: We administered a training course to 24 doctors and midwives. One of the simulation classrooms was modified to appear similar to a real delivery room. Four scenarios were conducted using a previously designed checklist of primary and secondary goals. Upon completion, all students participated in a debriefing session with the help of a video review. RESULTS: Students rated the achievement of their previously defined goals on a scale of 1 to 5. Grouping together the percentages of the highest ratings (Categories 4 and 5), 83.4% (20/24) of the students considered the course useful for acquiring clinical skills. For 87.5% (21/24) of the students, the scenarios simulated real clinical situations, the room properly simulated a real delivery room, and the course improved the students' ability to work in a team. For 66.6% (16/24) of the students, the course improved their stress in confronting neonatal resuscitation. Initially, only 33.3% (8/24) of the students considered themselves very capable or fully able to cope with a resuscitation. After the course, that percentage rose to 62.5% (15/24). CONCLUSIONS: The incorporation of simulation-based learning into neonatal resuscitation teaching programs, using realistic scenarios, is useful and offers the possibility of acquiring technical skills, but it also allows for the improvement of teamwork and the adoption of different roles and positive attitudes towards emotional stress.

This study presents the simulation of a MFC with Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on a metabolic flux analysis (MFA) which arises as a linear programming model that served as input for the fuel cell model. The linear model was implemented in Xpress MP? and the coupling model in Comsol Multiphysics?. The in silico model predicted maximum potentials of 0.135 V which were consistent with those obtained in the experimental cell. Afterwards, an optimization platform based on multiobjective optimization approach was implemented aimed to determine genes that increase the average cell power. cysA, cysP and rpoS mutants which were predicted to increase the power of the cell, were experimentally tested with an air cathode fuel cell finding an augment up to 35-fold in the average power density for the rpoS mutant. Power densities were obtained through experimentation in the range of [0.13 - 5] mW/m2. Electron shuttle rise was qualitative corroborated trough cyclic voltammetry tests, which allowed to visualize the augment of the peaks for rpoS mutation.

Nutrimental requirements of heliophytic poinsettias have not yet been determined, this information is essential for developing an adequate technological package to orient producers in its management. The behavior of the plant under nutritional stress needs to be known by the application of a hydroponic system. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological effect of induced deficiencies of five macronutriments （nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, and magnesium） and its influence on the pigment production of the poinsettia Euphorbia puleherrima cv. ＂Valenciana＂. The study was made during 2010 at the Research Unit ＂Dr. Ramon Fernandez gonzalez＂ in Texcoco, State of Mexico. Six treatments were tested during 240 days from transplant in a totally randomized experimental design. Chlorophylls contents were determined at the beginning of the experiment. At the end of the treatment period, the contents of nutrients, chlorophylls, leaf carotenoids and bract anthocyanins were determined. The effects observed as results of the treatments were： reduction in plant height and diameter; the lowest content of total chlorophylls was observed in the absence of nitrogen, the largest reduction being of chlorophyll a and carotenoids; a low content of anthocyanins was observed to be associated with low nitrogen and calcium; a high correlation was found between nitrogen supplementation and measured non-destructively with a SPAD 502 Minolta unit values measured intensity of green color of leaves.
