Regional dynamic cerebral autoregulation across anterior and posterior circulatory territories:A detailed exploration and its clinical implications

Cerebral autoregulation(CA)is the mechanism that maintains stable cerebral blood flow(CBF)despite fluctuations in systemic blood pressure,crucial for brain *** evidence highlights distinct regional variations in CA between the anterior(carotid)and posterior(vertebrobasilar)*** neuromonitoring techniques,such as transcranial Doppler,transfer function analysis,and near-infrared spectroscopy,facilitate the dynamic assessment of CBF and *** indicate a robust autoregulatory capacity in the anterior circulation,characterized by rapid adjustments in vascular *** the contrary,the posterior circulation,mainly supplied by the vertebral arteries,may have a lower autoregulatory *** acute brain injuries such as intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhage,and traumatic brain injuries,dynamic CA can be significantly altered in the posterior *** physiological mechanisms of impaired CA in the posterior circulation include:(1)Decreased sympathetic innervation of the vasculature impairing compensatory vasoreactivity;(2)Endothelial dysfunction;(3)Increased cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen consumption within the visual cortex causing CBFmetabolism(i.e.,neurovascular)uncoupling;and(4)Impaired blood-brain barrier integrity leading to impaired astrocytic mediated release of vasoactive substances(*** oxide,potassium,and calcium ions).Furthermore,more research is needed on the effects of collateral circulation,as well as the circle of Willis variants,such as the fetal-type posterior cerebral artery,on dynamic *** our understanding of these mechanisms is crucial to improving the diagnosis,prognosis,and management of various cerebrovascular disorders.

Formaldehyde (FHO) is a multipurpose chemical that is an eye, nose, throat and skin irritant, sensitizer and allergen, as well as a class 1 human carcinogen. Brazilian hair treatments, containing high levels of FHO (up to 11%), have become regularly used that have the potential to expose clients to toxic levels in excess of current regulatory standards. We report on a patient who underwent a single hair treatment and subsequently developed an autoimmune disease. We review the relevant literature on autoimmune disease and formaldehyde exposure. Our case adds to existing knowledge and suggests that physicians ask their patients about commercial products that contain formaldehyde when diagnosing autoimmune conditions.

Objective: Exposure to certain stresses in small doses might lead to a protective effect by improving resistance to other stressors. Dead Sea (DS) minerals can be a relevant source to induce positive stress due to their high salinity and unique mineral combination. This concept could be further optimized using advanced unique cell biotechnology. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the innovative concept of DS minerals (water extract and black mud) supplementation in small amount to Pichia pastoris yeast growth media as a positive stress by testing the capability of accepted fermentation compounds to affect the appearance of skin. Methods: Skin equivalents were topically applied with different Pichia pastoris fermentations (Metabiotics?). Skin elasticity biomarkers were tested, since loss of elasticity and suppleness is a natural skin aging process leading to deeper wrinkles and loss of firmness. A preliminary screening at the gene level using DNA microarray was performed and subsequently, the following proteins were detected using ELISA or immunoblotting assays: elastin, fibulin-1, lysyl oxidase (LOX), metalloproteinase 3 (MMP-3), E-cadherin, claudin 4, tight junction protein (TJP)-1 and TJP-2. UVB irradiation was selected as a stressor. Results: Fermentation compounds generated in the presence of small doses of DS minerals affected the expression of various elasticity-related genes in skin. Moreover, they significantly attenuated the abnormal UVB-induced alterations, the proteins elastin, fibulin-1, LOX, MMP-3, E-cadherin and TJP-2. Conclusions: The observations clearly demonstrate that when DS Metabiotics? compounds are topically applied, significant alterations in several biomarkers that contribute to skin elasticity occur. Thus, these novel compounds have the potential to serve as skincare actives.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of feeding four levels of tuna oil on performance and fatty acid (FA) profiles of broiler chicken meat. 240 Ross broiler chickens were randomly assigned to 20 pens and divided into four treatments: 0%, 0.75%, 1%, and 1.25% of tuna oil. At 49 days, breast and legs-thighs muscles were processed for FA analysis. Concentrations of FA in legs and thighs meat were significantly higher when compared with breast meat. In both types of meats (breast and legs-thighs), the inclusion of 1.0% or 1.25% of tuna oil in the diet significantly increased (P < 0.05) the concentration of n-3 FA (especially docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic acids). Fat in broiler breast contained a proportion of 29% saturated FA (SFA): 36% monosaturated FA (MFA): 35% polyunsaturated FA (PUFA);while legs and thighs meat had a proportion of 28% SFA: 38% MFA: 33% PUFA. The addition of tuna oil in the broiler diet significantly reduced the deposition of SFA, MFA, and PUFA in breast meat, while in legs and thighs these reductions were less noticeable. The significant reduction in the concentration of n-6 PUFA and the increment of n-3 PUFA were more evident in breast than in legs and thighs, and with the addition of 1% and 1.25% of tuna oil. The results of the present study suggest a difference in FA deposition attributable to supplementation with tuna oil. The addition of tuna oil could be recommendable to increase n-3 PUFA in both broiler chicken breast and legs-thighs meats, providing a healthier and functional chicken meat to consumer.

The study evaluated the effect of time and fatty acid (FA) composition in eggs of laying hens supplemented with tuna oil (TO). Two hundred White Leghorn hens 30-week were divided into 5 treatments with 4 replicates of 10 birds each. Treatments were assigned randomly and consisted of 0%, 0.75%, 1.50%, 2.25% and 3% TO in commercial sorghum-soybean meal diets, in which the soybean oil was partially replaced. The experiment was conducted for 90 days. At days 28, 56 and 84 of the experiment, 10 eggs per replicate were collected for chemical analysis. Feed intake, egg production rate, egg weight, and feed conversion were not influenced by dietary treatment. FA content was significantly altered (P < 0.05) by TO, showing a progressive increase in egg n-3 FA (especially docosahexaenoic [DHA] and eicosapentaenoic [EPA] acids) when TO was added. Levels of EPA and DHA were higher (P < 0.05) in the egg lipids of TO fed hens than those in the control group. This was correlated (P < 0.05) with the concentration of TO in the diet. However, no significant differences were observed either in egg weight or percent of egg lay between groups. There was a high correlation (P < 0.05) between TO inclusion level in the diet and the incorporation of EPA (r = 0.96) or DHA (r = 0.92) into the egg yolk and an overall decrease in n-6 FA. There was a high correlation (P < 0.05) between TO inclusion level and the incorporation of linoleic acid (LA, r = -0.95) or arachidonic acid (AA, r = -0.96) into the egg yolk. The highest incorporation (P < 0.05) of total n-3 FA content in eggs was obtained with 3% TO/kg. This increase was proportional to TO inclusion levels in the diets (r = 0.95). The results indicate that the n-3 FA content in eggs can be increased by dietary supplementation with TO, and that TO can serve as a reasonable alternative feed ingredient in layer diets to produce a healthier choice of egg.

Green extraction of phenolic compounds from Perle Hallertau and Nuggets hop pellets

Operation conditions to recover and quantify active compounds from Perle Hallertau (PH) and Nuggets (N) hops, following a sequential combination of ultrasound and microwave assisted ethanolic extraction were studied. Ultrasound treatment (55 °C, 60% ethanol, 30 minutes) allowed extracts with phenolic contents of 160.43 mg GAE/g extract and ABTS radical scavenging capacity equivalent to 400.24 mg Trolox/g extract for PH. Optimal conditions for N were found at 55 °C, using 60% ethanol for 120 minutes (98.80 mg GAE/g extract) and 55 °C, 40% ethanol for 180 min (370.00 mg Trolox/g extract). The remaining solids were further processed under ethanolic microwave extraction (130–190 °C, 5 minutes) with the optimal results obtained at 190 °C for PH (77.11 and 98.67 mg GAE/g extract) and N (226.96 and 368.72 mg Trolox/g extract). Results obtained provided hops pellets as a rich source of active compounds that could be suitable for food and no food industry applications.

Nine novel microsatellite markers are presented for Aphelinus mali, a parasitoid of the woolly apple aphid Eriosoma lanigerum. Loci were characterized for 28 individuals from a single orchard in central Chile. Seven loci were polymorphic within A. mali （3-6 alleles per locus; observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.04 to 0.57） and are therefore useful for population genetic studies within this species.
