The differences in carbon dynamics between boreal dwarf shrubs and Scots pine seedlings in a microcosm study

Aims The ground level of boreal pine forests consists of a dense layer of eri-caceous shrubs,herbs,grasses,mosses and *** primary prod-uctivity of this forest floor vegetation is notable but the role the most common ericoid dwarf shrub plant species,Calluna vulgaris,Vaccinium myrtillus and Vaccinium vitis-idaea,play in carbon(C)cycling in these ecosystems is poorly ***,we studied their C dynamics in detail using plants of similar size(age 14-19 months)in a microcosm *** We determined the full C balances of these dwarf shrubs for the first time and compared them to those of Pinus sylvestris by using long-term biomass accumulation,^(13)C pulse labelling and CO_(2) ex-change measurements in a controlled laboratory *** Findings Pinus sylvestris had significantly higher biomass-based C fluxes than dwarf shrubs,both aboveground and belowground,but the dwarf shrubs did not differ in the biomass-based *** showed that root respiration of the evergreen ericoid dwarf shrubs was sensitive to the aboveground light conditions as belowground respiration was 50-70%higher under light compared with dark *** light-related dif-ferences were not observed for Scots *** observed differences in C dynamics are important in estimating the origin of belowground CO_(2) fluxes and in evaluating their biological *** results improve current understanding of CO_(2) sources and sinks in boreal ecosystems.

Effects of condensed distillers solubles and drying temperature on the physico-chemical characteristics of laboratory-prepared wheat distillers grain with solubles

Samples of wheat distillers grain with solubles were prepared at 15%,30%,and 45%condensed distillers solubles(CDS)and dried under 40°C,80°C,and 120°C to examine the effects of CDS level and drying temperature on their chemical,physical,flow,compression,thermal,and frictional *** CDS level increased,protein and ash contents increased while fat and fiber contents *** and acid detergent fiber contents were also markedly affected by drying *** CDS level,drying temperature,and their interaction significantly affected a number of the physical properties,results suggest that CDS level had a stronger *** with high CDS level,for example,were significantly finer,denser,less flowable,and less dispersible than those with lower *** samples also had significantly higher thermal diffusivity and coefficient of internal friction and produced pellets with higher failure stresses than those with lower *** pellet density increased with CDS level and was also significantly affected by drying ***,the samples were classified as fairly flowable and floodable and their compression characteristics were adequately described by the Kawakita-Ludde model.

Development and transferability of two multiplexes nSSR in Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)

Single sequence repeat（SSR） multiplexing is a semi high-throughput PCR methodology for the analysis of multiple *** developed two SSR multiplexes selected from SSR loci previously reported in the pine literature and tested the transferability of both SSR multiplexes in nine other pine *** tested 234 nuclear SSR loci（n SSRs） previously described in the pine literature and selected ten n SSRs following the simple criteria of interpretability and *** nuclear loci were divided into two n SSRs multiplex sets and their amplification was optimized for three different multiplex PCR methods based on：（a） a custom PCR protocol,（b） a custom protocol with hotstart taq polymerase,and（c） a commercially available kit for SSR *** validate their performance,the level of genetic diversity was assessed in three Scots pine natural populations（Hungary,northern Sweden and southern Sweden）.In addition,we also tested the transferability of these multiplexes in nine other pine *** have developed two n SSRs multiplexes of five loci each that will contribute to reduce the costs of n SSR scoring,while increasing the capacity of n SSR loci *** was successful in all three populations（94 % success） and the level of polymorphism（7.1 alleles/marker） was similar to that previously reported for other Scots pine natural *** of both multiplexes was successful for those pine species closely related to Scots pine.

This work considers a special case of Lotka-Volterra equations, which means that in the system of two ordinary differential equations, we take the four parameters equal to one. The reason is that we want just to illustrate the procedure to reduce that system to only one ordinary differential equation, such that we know its analytical solution. This idea will be applied to study the relations between a system of three ordinary differential equations, and a couple of partial differential equations. Lotka-Volterra equations are solved numerically by a fourth-order predictor-corrector method, which is initialized by an improved Euler method with a rather small time step because it is only a second-order algorithm. Then, it is proposed a model with three species, defined by ordinary differential equations.

AIM To determine the variability/conservation of the domain of hepatitis B virus(HBV) pre S1 region that interacts with sodium-taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide(hereafter, NTCP-interacting domain) and the prevalence of the rs2296651 polymorphism(S267 F, NTCP variant) in a Spanish population. METHODS Serum samples from 246 individuals were included and divided into 3 groups: patients with chronic HBV infection(CHB)(n = 41, 73% Caucasians), patients with resolved HBV infection(n = 100, 100% Caucasians) and an HBV-uninfected control group(n = 105, 100% Caucasians). Variability/conservation of the amino acid(aa) sequences of the NTCPinteracting domain,(aa 2-48 in viral genotype D) and a highly conserved pre S1 domain associated with virion morphogenesis(aa 92-103 in viral genotype D) were analyzed by next-generation sequencing and compared in 18 CHB patients with viremia > 4 log IU/mL. The rs2296651 polymorphism was determined in all individuals in all 3 groups using an in-house real-time PCR melting curve *** The HBV pre S1 NTCP-interacting domain showed a high degree of conservation among the examined viral genomes especially between aa 9 and 21(in the genotype D consensus sequence). As compared with the virion morphogenesis domain, the NTCPinteracting domain had a smaller proportion of HBV genotype-unrelated changes comprising > 1% of the quasispecies(25.5% vs 31.8%), but a larger proportion of genotype-associated viral polymorphisms(34% vs 27.3%), according to consensus sequences from Gen Bank patterns of HBV genotypes A to H. Variation/conservation in both domains depended on viral genotype, with genotype C being the most highly conserved and genotype E the most variable(limited finding, only 2 genotype E included). Of note, proline residues were highly conserved in both domains, and serine residues showed changes only to threonine or tyrosine in the virion morphogenesis domain. Background: The pure arterial malformation (PAM) lesion has been recently described as a vascular pathology characterized by the sole presence of coiled, sometimes ectatic, arterial loops. 2% of the fusiform aneurysms are located in the vertebral-posterior inferior cerebellar arteries. Case Presentation: A 60 years old female with subarachnoid hemorrhage was diagnosed with a fusiform aneurysm in the right PICA related with a PAM in the digital subtraction angiography (DSA). With a negative super-selective Wada test, the patient was treated with embolization of the two lesions and the PICA for being in the same arterial territory with adhesive embolic liquid under roadmap fluoroscopy technique. The patient had a satisfactory clinical evolution and no added neurological deficit, so she was discharged 3 days after the treatment. Conclusion: These two vascular lesions located in the same artery are very rare and more in the PICA territory. It is important to make the best decision to treat them because of the potential complications;that’s why the procedure was supported with super-selective Wada test and neuromonitoring of the PICA territory. The injection of the mixture of NBCA and Lipiodol® under roadmap fluoroscopy is very safe.

Effect of Risperidone and Fluoxetine on the Movement and Neurochemical Changes of Zebrafish

Brain developmental disorders in humans, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Down’s syndrome, have been linked to increased serotonin levels. This work was designed to study changes in serotonin levels in the early stages of development with two classes of antipsychotic drugs: Risperidone, a drug that blocks serotonin and dopamine receptors, and fluoxetine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. The use of antipsychotic drugs is a solid choice to study the decrease and increase of these neurotransmitters and their influence on development. The study of these parameters will give an idea of the effects of serotonin in early developmental stages. To this end, we examined the effects of risperidone and fluoxetine on the locomotor activity, heart rate and brain development of zebrafish larvae. Our results showed that in larvae exposed to fluoxetine alone, swimming was significantly increased at 9 dpf (days post-fertilization). Erratic and abnormal movements were observed suggesting a toxic effect of fluoxetine. No erratic swimming was observed in larvae treated with fluoxetine plus risperidone. Both drugs presented morphological changes in dopaminergic neurons and mononeurons. Exposure to fluoxetine plus risperidone indicated possible reversal effects. Studies in zebrafish allow obtaining new insights into the side effects of these drugs as well as into the brain control of locomotor activity. Testing several drug-induced changes in behavior and serotonin levels is one of the experimental approaches for screening a new therapeutically relevant compound, and thus, merits further research.
