Avian malaria and related haemosporidian parasites can negatively impact fitness in many *** on the malaria infection and its physiological costs on their avian hosts is heavily skewed toward native passerines,with exotic species ***,introduced species may carry on and spread new pathogens to native species,and play a role on parasite transmission cycle in invaded bird communities as pathogen ***,we molecularly assess the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in three introduced wetland passerines(the Red Avadavat Amandava amandava,the Yellow-crowned Bishop Euplectes afer,and the Common Waxbill Estrilda astrild)captured during the same season in southwestern *** also explored the relation between parasite infection,body condition,haematocrit,and uropygial gland *** detected an overall parasite prevalence of 3.55%,where Common Waxbills showed higher prevalence(6.94%)than Red Avadavats(1.51%).None Yellow-crowned Bishops were infected with *** 60%of infections were caused by Leucocytozoon,and about 40%by *** identified four unique lineages of Plasmodium and three of ***,91%of the identified host-parasite interactions represented new host records for these haemosporidian *** infection was not related to body condition,haematocrit,and uropygial gland volume of the wetland *** values varied seasonally among bird ***,haematocrit was positively related to body condition in the Yellow-crowned Bishops,but not in the other *** Avadavats had higher haematocrit levels than Yellow-crowned Bishops,whereas Common Waxbills showed the lower haematocrit *** uropygial gland volume was positively correlated with body condition in all bird *** Waxbills showed higher uropygial gland volumes related to their body size than birds from other two *** outcomes highlight the importance of e

Objective To determine whether topical applications of thiosulfinate-enriched Allium sativum extract(TASE)can accelerate acute cutaneous wound healing(WH)in a murine *** Keratinocyte viability and in vitro wound closure were assessed in keratinocyte *** of topical TASE(0.5μg/mL of allicin in 97%ethanol)on acute cutaneous WH were determined in a murine model of acute cutaneous *** mice were alternately assigned to the vehicle-and TASE-treated groups(n=6 per group).Expression levels of mRNA for keratinocyte differentiation marker-related proteins(filaggrin,loricrin and involucrin)and lipid synthetic enzymes(elongation of very long chain fatty acids protein 4(ELOVL4),fatty acid synthase(FA2H),3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase(HMGCoA),and serine palmitoyltransferase(SPT))were assessed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction on day 3 and 8 after wounding,while transepidermal water loss(TEWL)rates were measured in wounded *** TASE accelerated WH both in vivo(40%vs.22%reduction in wound area,Plated the expression levels of epidermal mRNA for ELOVL4,HMGCoA,SPT,filaggrin,loricrin and involucrin(Plated keratinocyte proliferation and formation of epidermal permeability barrier function,leading to acceleration of acute cutaneous *** products containing TASE could be used to manage acute cutaneous WH.

Racotumomab monoclonal antibody is a murine anti-idiotypic antibody. This monoclonal antibody mimics N-glycolyl-GM3 gangliosides has been tested in several clinical trials Phase I/II for breast, melanoma and non-small cell lung cancer patients as an anti-idiotypic cancer vaccine. The early production process was performed in vivo from mice ascites fluid. This process was transferred to bioreactor-based method at pilot scale followed to the scale-up of the fermentation. In this work we present a comprehensive molecular characterization of racotumomab MAb produced by the two different production scales in order to determine the impact of the manufacturing process in vaccine performance. We observed differences in glycosylation pattern and charge heterogeneity between racotumomab produced in both scales. Interestingly, these modifications had no significant impact on biological activity elicited in chickens. So, changes in primary structure like glycosylation, charge heterogeneity and oxidation did not affect biological activity of the vaccine.

Obesity is a major worldwide health problem that is related to most chronic diseases,including male *** to its wide impact on health,mechanisms underlying obesity-related infertility remain *** this study,we report that mice fed a high-fat diet(HFD)for over 2 months showed reduced fertility rates and increased germ cell apoptosis,seminiferous tubule degeneration,and decreased intratesticular estradiol(E2)and E2-to-testosterone ***,we also detected a decrease in testicular fatty acid levels,behenic acid(C22:0),and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA,22:6n-3),which may be related to the production of dysfunctional ***,we did not detect any changes in the frequency of seminiferous tubule stages,sperm count,or rate of in vitro ***,there was an increase in spontaneous and progesterone-induced acrosomal exocytosis(acrosome reaction)in spermatozoa from HFD-fed *** data suggest that a decrease in E2 and fatty acid levels influences spermatogenesis and some steps of acrosome biogenesis that will have consequences for ***,our results add new evidence about the adverse effect of obesity in male reproduction and suggest that the acrosomal reaction can also be affected under this condition.

Giant Spinal Schwannomas. Presentation of Two Cases with Interdisciplinary Surgical Resection

Purpose: To report two quite rare cases of giant schwannomas of the cervical and thoracic spine. Surgical resection is usually the treatment of choice for these neoplasms. Methods: The first patient is a 48-year-old male that came to our department, complaining about weakness and paresthesia of both lower extremities and upper left extremity, and a considerably big dorsal palpable lump. MRI and CT scan were used to diagnose giant cervical schwannoma. Because of the intensity of symptoms, he was subjected to surgery. Multidisciplinary resection involving neurosurgical and oncosurgicalteamn was performed for intravertebral and extravertebral approaches. The second patient is a 55-year-old female that came to the hospital complaining about incapacitating pain and dysesthesia involving T6, T7, and T8 dermatomes, with no other deficits. MRI and CT scan were used to diagnose giant thoracic schwannoma. Because of the intensity of the pain, surgery was decided as the treatment of choice. Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery was performed and total resection was achieved, with improvement of the symptoms. Results: Both patients showed complete remission of the symptoms, with no major deficits after surgery. Conclusion: Although infrequent, giant spinal schwannomas may be the cause of visible lumps in the back with radicular symptoms. When asymptomatic, conservative treatment could be viable, but when they present symptoms, surgery offers good results.

The pygmy marmoset,the smallest of the anthropoid primates,has a broad distribution in Western *** studies using molecular and morphological data have identified two distinct species separated by the Napo and Solimoes-Amazonas ***,reconciling this new biological evidence with current taxonomy,i.e.,two subspecies,Cebuella pygmaea pygmaea(Spix,1823)and Cebuella pygmaea niveiventris(Lönnberg,1940),was problematic given the uncertainty as to whether Spix’s pygmy marmoset(Cebuella pygmaea pygmaea)was collected north or south of the Napo and Solimoes-Amazonas rivers,making it unclear to which of the two newly revealed species the name pygmaea would ***,we present the first molecular data from Spix’s type specimen of Cebuella pygmaea,as well as novel mitochondrial genomes from modern pygmy marmosets sampled near the type locality(Tabatinga)on both sides of the *** these data,we can confirm the correct names of the two species identified,i.e.,*** for animals north of the Napo and Solimoes-Amazonas rivers and *** for animals south of these two *** analyses of the novel genetic data placed into the context of cytochrome b gene sequences from across the range of pygmy marmosets further led us to reevaluate the geographical distribution for the two Cebuella *** dated the split of these two species to 2.54 million years *** discuss additional,more recent,subdivisions within each lineage,as well as potential contact zones between the two species in the headwaters of these rivers.
