Heterologous Bovine Tunica Albuginea Graft Conserved in Honey as Abdominal Wall Reinforcement in Rats

Complex abdominal wall defects might be challenging for human and veterinary surgeons worldwide. defects from trauma or congenital causes may lead to hernias development. The introduction of meshes to reinforce hernia repairs has improved surgical outcomes and several synthetic and biologic materials have been used. In this context, biomaterial prosthesis seems to be a satisfactory solution when managing great abdominal wall defects. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the bovine tunica albuginea (BTA) preserved in honey as graft material for rats’ abdominal wall reinforcement in incisional herniorrhaphy surgery as well as its viability, cicatrization and integration into the host tissue. Wistar rats were assigned to two main groups: 1) animals (n = 20) underwent median longitudinal laparotomy followed by laparorraphy with suture of the bovine tunica albuginea (BTA) graft as abdominal wall reinforcement;and 2) animals (n = 20) underwent only laparotomy and subsequent laparorrhaphy. Rats were clinically evaluated until euthanasia at post-surgical day 7, 14, 21 and 28. Necropsy and histopathological analysis of abdominal wall fragments were performed to compare groups and subgroups findings. BTA promoted abundant fibrosis, providing resistance and low postoperative complication rates. Besides, animals did not show rejection signs to the implant. In conclusion, BTA preserved in honey is an affordable, easy collection and handling biomaterial for graft, demanding simple surgical implantation technique for abdominal wall repair in rats.

Dielectrophoresis is a powerful and well-established technique that allows label-free,non-invasive manipulation of cells and particles by leveraging their electrical *** practical implementation of the associated electronics and user interface in a biology laboratory,however,requires an engineering background,thus hindering the broader adoption of the *** order to address these challenges and to bridge the gap between biologists and the engineering skills required for the implementation of deP platforms,we report here a custom-built,compact,universal electronic platform termed AdePT(adaptable dielectrophoresis embedded platform tool)for use with a simple microfluidic chip containing six *** versatility of the open-source platform is ensured by a custom-developed graphical user interface that permits simple reconfiguration of the control signals to address a wide-range of specific applications:(i)precision positioning of the single bacterium/cell/particle in the micrometer range;(ii)viability-based separation by achieving a 94%efficiency in separating live and dead yeast;(iii)phenotype-based separation by achieving a 96%efficiency in separating yeast and Bacillus subtilis;(iv)cell–cell interactions by steering a phagocytosis process where a granulocyte engulfs *** RGB-S ***,the set of experiments and the platform form a complete basis for a wide range of possible applications addressing various biological questions exploiting the plug-and-play design and the intuitive GUI of AdePT.

Neuropathic pain is a severe and chronic condition widely found in the general *** reason for this is the extensive variety of damage or diseases that can spark this unpleasant constant feeling in *** the processing of pain,the dorsal root ganglia constitute an important region where dorsal root ganglion neurons play a crucial role in the transmission and propagation of sensory electrical ***,the dorsal root ganglia have recently exhibited a regenerative capacity that should not be neglected in the understanding of the development and resolution of neuropathic pain and in the elucidation of innovative ***,we will review the complex interplay between cells(satellite glial cells and inflammatory cells)and factors(cytokines,neurotrophic factors and genetic factors)that takes place within the dorsal root ganglia and accounts for the generation of the aberrant excitation of primary sensory neurons occurring in neuropathic *** importantly,we will summarize an updated view of the current pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies targeting the dorsal root ganglia for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Effect of lead chloride on spermatogenesis and sperm parameters in mice

Aim: To evaluate the effect of acute lead chloride exposure on testis and sperm parameters in mice. Methods: PbCl2, 74 mg/kg, was daily administered to sexually mature male mice for 3 days and the effects on the testicular histology and ultrastructure as well as the motility and density of spermatozoa in cauda epididymis were observed. An additional group of mice were treated for 1-3 days and were allowed to recover for 32 days to determine the reversibility of lead-induced changes. Results: The testicular weight, seminiferous tubular diameter and sperm counts were significantly decreased following 3 days of PbCl2 treatment, but were unaffected by shorter-term exposures. The changes caused by lead are mostly reversible. Conclusion: Acute lead chloride exposure injures the fertility parameters of male mice and the effects are partially reversible.

Identification of Rhizobia Isolated from Nodules of Mexican Commercial Soybean Varieties

Rhizobia, crucial for nitrogen fixation in leguminous plants, play a vital role in soybean cultivation. This study, conducted in Mexico, a major soybean importer, aimed to identify bacteria from nodules of five soybean varieties in high-production regions. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) was employed for enhanced species resolution. The study identified six Bradyrhizobium species: Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110, Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 6, Bradyrhizobium elkanii USDA 76, Bradyrhizobium neotropicale, Bradyrhizobium lablabi, and Bradyrhizobium icense. Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110 predominated in the soils, displaying symbiotic preference for the Huasteca 400 variety. However, phylogenetic analysis didn't reveal a clear association between strains, soil, and soybean variety. This research sheds light on the diversity of rhizobia in Mexican soybean cultivation, contributing to the understanding of symbiotic relationships in soybean production systems.

Adsorption of Mn^(2+) from aqueous solution using Fe and Mn oxide-coated sand

The adsorption of Mn2＋ onto immobilized Mn-oxide and Fe-oxide adsorbent such as manganese oxide-coated sand 1 （MOCS1）, manganese oxide-coated sand2 （MOCS2）, iron oxide-coated sand2 （IOCS2）, and manganese and iron oxide-coated sand （MIOCS）was investigated. The effects of pH （5.5 to 8.0） and temperature （25 to45°C） on the equilibrium capacitywere examined. Equilibrium studies showed that there is a good fitwith both Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm,which indicates surface heterogeneity and monolayer adsorption of the adsorbents. Kineticdata showed high correlationwith the pseudo second-order model,which signifies a chemisorption-controlled mechanism. The activation energies, activation parameters （ΔG＊,ΔH＊,ΔS＊）, and thermodynamic parameters （ΔG0 , ΔH0 , ΔS0 ） confirmed that adsorptionwith MIOCSwas endothermic and more spontaneous at higher temperaturewhile an opposite trendwas observed for the other adsorbents. Thermodynamic studies showed that adsorption involved formation of activated complex,where MOCS1 and MIOCS follow a physical-chemical mechanism,while MOCS2 and IOCS2 follows purely chemical mechanism.

Objective:To investigate the influence of ABCB1 polymorphisms on the plasma level of efavirenz in Thai adult cases infected with ***:A single nucleotide polymorphism of ABCB13435 C>T(rs1045642)in the gene encoding ABCB1 was genotyped using real-time PCR-based alleles in 149 HIV-infected Thai adults receiving efavirenz *** concentrations of efavirenz were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography 12 hr after *** relationship between plasma efavirenz concentrations and ABCB13435 C>T polymorphisms was ***:Logistic regression analysis showed no significant predictors of high plasma efavirenz concentration in relation to age,gender,body weight,CD4 count and plasma HIV-1 RNA,blood biochemical parameters,antiretroviral duration or ABCB13435 C>T polymorphisms,except for height(OR=0.902,95%CI:0.835-0.973)(PT *** frequency of the heterozygous mutant ABCB13435 C/T was 53.02%(n=79),ABCB13435 T/T homozygous mutant was 18.12%(n=21)and the wild type ABCB13435 C/C genotype was 28.86%(n=43).The overall median plasma concentration of efavirenz in 149 HIV-infected Thai cases was 2.41 mg/L[IQR:(1.46-4.12)mg/L].The plasma concentration of efavirenz was higher in cases with ABCB13435 T/T homozygous mutant[2.73 mg/L,IQR:(2.02-4.19)mg/L]and ABCB13435 C/T heterozygous mutant[2.29 mg/L,IQR:(1.41-4.28)mg/L]genotypes compared to the wild type ABCB13435 C/C homozygous[2.1 mg/L,IQR:(1.37-3.53)mg/L].However,there was no statistically significant difference in the efavirenz concentration between the different genotypes(P>0.05).Objective:To investigate the influence of ABCB1 polymorphisms on the plasma level of efavirenz in Thai adult cases infected with ***:A single nucleotide polymorphism of ABCB13435 C>T(rs1045642)in the gene encoding ABCB1 was genotyped using real-time PCR-based alleles in 149 HIV-infected Thai adults receiving efavirenz *** concentrations

Origin of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Cuba in the 19th Century from Its Main Exponents and Some Notable Medical descendants in the 20th Century

The Cuban people are made up of three major migratory currents, the Chinese are one of them. They brought their culture, the methods, and procedures of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) in the 19th century. Few were able to return and so they created families in Cuba;some of their descendants dedicated themselves to medicine. In order to investigate the practices that were predecessors of TCM in Cuba in the 19th century, a qualitative phenomenological research was carried out, reviewing what was published by various sources, applying documentary analysis, logical historical analysis, abstraction, synthesis, and systematization of the results on the regularities of the work and human behavior of Chinese doctors in the Cuban 19th and 20th centuries. This made it possible to identify six Chinese doctors in the 19th century in Cuba who gave rise to the beginning of some practices of TCM in Cuba, and five from the 20th century, descendants of coolies who dedicated themselves to other specialties of medicine. It was found that despite their geographical and time disperse, they were all notorious for their outstanding professional and human behavior, with a trail of accumulated successes in achieving “almost the impossible” with the patient. They have left their mark on Cuban culture.
