Thyroid tumors are usually associated with euthyroidism, and hyper functioning tumors are rare. There are few reports of carcinomas associated with hyperthyroidism. The aim of this study is to describe a case of hyper functioning papillary carcinoma associated with breast carcinoma. We present a 46-year-old woman that was referred for investigation of thyroid and breast nodules detected by routine ultrasound. She presented with hyperthyroidism and enlarged left thyroid lobe with fibroelastic consistency. Investigation demonstrated papillary carcinoma with follicular hyperactivity and invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. The patient developed metastases 6 months later and died. This study demonstrates that hot thyroid nodules may harbor malignant tumors and should be punctured. The association with breast adenocarcinoma and the unfavorable outcome suggest higher aggressiveness of this tumor in the presence of hyperthyroidism.

Methane cracking is considered a bridge technology between gray and green hydrogen production *** this work an experimental study of methane cracking in molten tin is *** tests were conducted in a quartz reactor(i.d.=1.5 cm,L=20 cm)with capillary injection,varying temperature(950–1070℃),inlet methane flow rate(30–60 mL·min^(-1))and tin height(0–20 cm).The influence of the residence time in the tin and in the headspace on methane conversion and on carbon morphology was *** conversions obtained in tin and in the empty reactor were measured and compared with results of detailed kinetic simulations(CRECK).furthermore,an expression of a global kinetic constant for methane conversion in tin was also *** highest conversion(65%at Q_(0)=30 mL·min^(-1) and t=1070℃)is obtained for homogeneous gas phase reaction due to the long residence time(70 s),the presence of tin leads to a sharp decrease of residence time(1 s),obtaining a conversion of 35%at 1070℃,thus meaning that tin owns a role in the *** characterization(scanning electron microscopy,Raman)reported a change in carbon toward sheet-like structures and an increase of the carbon structural order in the presence of molten tin media.

Severe SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Late Impact on the Retinal Ganglion Cell Layer Thickness

Purpose: The involvement of the ocular anterior segment by SARS-CoV-2 has been the subject of many studies, however, the repercussions on the posterior segment, particularly on the different layers of the retina and optic nerve, are still little known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of severe COVID-19 on the retinal ganglion cell layer (RGCL) thickness. Methods: This observational, prospective and analytical study was performed in the Ophthalmology department of the fACISA University Center, Campina Grande. Three groups were included: group I (control), 29 healthy individuals who had not severe COVID-19;group II (infirmary), 24 individuals who had COVID-19 and were hospitalized in the infirmary;and group III, 25 individuals who had severe COVID-19 and required Intense Care Unit (ICU). All individuals had ophthalmologic examination and assessment of RGCL thickness using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Statistical tests required p ≤ 0.05 to reject the null hypothesis. Results: The mean of RGCL thickness was significantly reduced in individuals from GIII (77.9 ± 8.9 µm), as compared with GII (83.9 ± 10.9 µm) and GI (82.8 ± 6.5 µm) (p = 0.0027). The mean measurements from the retinal neve fiber layer (RNfL) of the optic nerve head were similar. However, when evaluated sectoral, the mean of RNfL at the temporal sector of the optic disc was significantly lower in group GIII (p Conclusion: The RGCL thickness from patients with severe COVID-19 was significantly reduced. This finding supports that the SARS-CoV-2 has systemic action and affinity for nerve cells, including those from the retina and are related to the severity of the infection.

The design,analysis,fabrication,and characterization of two distinct MEMS rotational structures are provided;these structures include a classical symmetrical lancet structure and a novel symmetrical C-shaped structure provided with a tilted arm,and both are actuated by thermal *** proposed C-shaped structure implemented a curved beam mechanism to enhance the movement delivered by the thermal *** geometrical parameters of our proposed device were optimized using the design of experiment(DOE)***,the analytical modeling based on Castigliano’s second theorem and the simulations based on the finite element method(fEM)were used to predict the behavior of the symmetrical C-shaped structure;the results were in good agreement with each *** MEMS-based rotational structures were fabricated on silicon-on-insulator(SOI)wafers using bulk micromachining technology and deep reactive ion etching(DRIE)*** fabricated devices underwent experimental characterization;our results showed that our proposed MEMS rotational structure exhibited a 28%improvement in the delivered displacement compared to the symmetrical lancet ***,the experimental results showed good agreement with those obtained from numerical *** proposed structures have potential applications in a variety of MEMS devices,including accelerometers,gyroscopes,and resonators,due to their ability to maximize displacement and thus enhance sensitivity.

Knowledge regarding the influence of individual traits on interaction patterns in nature can help understand the topological role of individuals within a network of intrapopulation *** tested hypotheses on the relationships between individuals'positions within networks(specialization and centrality)of 4 populations of the mouse opossum Gracilinanus agilis and their traits(i.e.,body length,body condition,tail length relative to body length,sex,reproductive condition,and botfly parasitism)and also seasonal effects in the Brazilian *** with lower body length,better body condition,and relatively shorter tail were more specialized(i.e.,less connected within the network).Individuals were also more specialized and less connected during the warm-wet *** relationship between individuals'position in the network and body traits,however,was independent of *** propose that specialization may arise not only as a result of preferred feed-ing strategies by more capable individuals(i.e.,those with better body condition and potentially prone to defend and access high-quality food resources)but alsobecause of morphological ***/younger individuals(consequently with less experience in foraging)and short-tailed individuals(less skilled to explore the vertical strata of the vegetation)would feed only on a subset of the available food resources and consequently become more ***,individuals are more specialized during the warm-wet season because of high competition(population-dense period)and higher ecological opportunities(resource-rich period).Therefore,our study reveals the relevance of individual traits inshaping interactionpatternsandspecialization inpopulations.

Managing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is becoming increasingly complex and personalized,considering the advent of new advanced therapies with distinct mechanisms of *** mucosal healing(MH)is a pivotal therapeutic goal in IBD management and can prevent IBD progression and reduce flares,hospitalization,surgery,intestinal damage,and colorectal *** proactive disease and therapy assessment is essential to achieve better control of intestinal inflammation,even if subclinical,to alter the natural course of *** monitoring of fecal calprotectin(fC)levels and interval endoscopic evaluations are cornerstones for evaluating response/remission to advanced therapies targeting IBD,assessing MH,and detecting subclinical ***,we comment on the article by Ishida et al Moreover,this editorial aimed to review the role of fC and endoscopic scores in predicting MH in patients with ***,we intend to present some evidence on the role of these markers in future targets,such as histological and transmural *** prospective multicenter studies with a stricter MH criterion,standardized endoscopic and histopathological analyses,and virtual chromoscopy,potentially including artificial intelligence and other biomarkers,are desired.

Quantum physics rules the dynamics of small objects as they interact over microscopic length ***,quantum correlations involving macroscopic distances can be observed between entangled photons as well as in atomic gases and matter waves at low *** long-range nature of the electromagnetic coupling between charged particles and extended objects could also trigger quantum phenomena over large ***,we reveal a manifestation of quantum mechanics that involves macroscopic distances and results in a nearly complete depletion of coherence associated with which-way free-electron interference produced by electron-radiation coupling in the presence of distant extended *** is a ubiquitous effect that we illustrate through a rigorous theoretical analysis of a two-path electron beam interacting with a semi-infinite metallic plate and find the inter-path coherence to vanish proportionally to the path separation at zero temperature and exponentially at finite *** investigated regime of large distances originates in the coupling of the electron to radiative modes assisted by diffraction at material structures but without any involvement of material *** the fundamental interest of this macroscopic quantum phenomenon,our results suggest an approach to measuring the vacuum temperature and nondestructively sensing the presence of distant objects.

Bioplastics were first introduced as environmentally friendly materials,with properties similar to those of conventional plastics.A bioplastic is defined as biodegradable if it can be decomposed into carbon dioxide under aerobic degradation,or methane and CO_(2)under anaerobic conditions,inorganic compounds,and new cellular biomass,by the action of naturally occurring *** definition however does not provide any information on the environmental conditions,timescale and extent at which decomposition processes should *** regard to the aquatic environment,recognized standards have been established to assess the ability of plastics to undergo biodegradation;however,these standards fail to provide clear targets to be met to allow labelling of a bioplastic as ***,these standards grant the user an extensive leeway in the choice of process *** these reasons,the comparison of results deriving from different studies is *** authors analysed and discussed the degree of biodegradability of a series of biodegradable bioplastics in aquatic environments(both fresh and salt water)using the results obtained in the laboratory and from on-site testing in the context of different research *** Oxygen demand(BOD),CO_(2)evolution,surface erosion and weight loss were the main parameters used by researchers to describe the percentage of *** results showed a large variability both in weight loss and BOD,even when evaluating the same type of *** confirms the need for a reference range of values to be established with regard to parameters applied in defining the biodegradability of bioplastics.
