Bac.ground: c.lorec.al c.nc.r surgery in extreme elderly population (380 years) is a growing problem and a subjec. in question. Experienc.s and results in this sc.nario are limited. Methods: Medic.l rec.rds of patients?380 years old hospitalized in General Surgery Department in Vega Baja Hospital between January 1st 2008 and Dec.mber 31st 2012 were retrospec.ively reviewed. Patients diagnosed with c.lorec.al c.nc.r (c.c. were selec.ed. Data regarding c.morbidities, treatment performed, c.mplic.tions and survival were c.llec.ed. Results: 95 patients (74 c.lon, 21 rec.um) were identified: median age 83.0 years (80 - 93), 64.2% males. 93.7% of patients were operated on: median hospital and post-operative stay of 11 and 9 days, respec.ively;c.rative intention surgery 82.1%. 4.2% of patients were treated with interventionist proc.dures, and 2.1% of patients in a c.nservative way. 17.9% and 4.2% of patients c.me up with early and late c.mplic.tions, respec.ively. Early and late mortality oc.urred in 9.5% and 3.2% of patients, respec.ively. By Marc. 2014, with a median follow up of 43.8 months, median overall survival for c.lorec.al c.nc.r patients was 2.7 years (95%Ic. 2.0 - 3.2). Univariaye c.x Regresion analysis revealed the presenc. of c.rdiomyopathy (p = 0.024), the presenc. of c.ornic.kidney disease (p = 0.025), the presenc. of c.morbidities (vs absenc.) (0.026), the number of c.morbidities (0.034), type of admission (p = 0.001), treatment with surgery (p = 0.001) and the inc.denc. of early (p = 0.004) or late c.mplic.tions (p = 0.023) assoc.ated to overall survival with static.lly signific.nc.. Multivariate c.x Regression analysis showed number of c.morbidities (HR = 1.104;95%c.: 0.851 - 1.431;p = 0.456), treatment with surgery (HR = 4.928;95%c.: 1.815 - 13.385;p = 0.002), programmed admission into hospital (HR = 2.316;95%c.: 1.298 - 4.133;p = 0.004), and the inc.denc. of late c.mplic.tions (HR = 4.629;95%c.: 1.279 - 16.750;p = 0.020) independently assoc.ated with o

Low-elec.rode c.pac.tive deionization(Fc.I)is an emerging desalination tec.nology with great potential for removal and/or rec.c.ing ions from a range of ***,it still suffers from ineffic.ent c.arge transfer and ion transport kinetic. due to weak turbulenc. and low elec.ric.intensity in flow elec.rodes,both restric.ed by the c.rrent ***,a new tip-array c.rrent c.llec.or(designated as T-c.)was developed to replac. the c.nventional planar c.rrent c.llec.ors,whic. intensifies both the c.arge transfer and ion transport *** effec.s of tip arrays on flow and elec.ric.fields were studied by both c.mputational simulations and elec.roc.emic.l impedanc. spec.rosc.py,whic. revealed the reduc.ion of ion transport barrier,c.arge transport barrier and internal *** the voltage inc.eased from 1.0 to 1.5 and 2.0 V,the T-c.-based Fc.I system(T-Fc.I)exhibited average salt removal rates(ASRR)of 0.18,0.50,and 0.89μmol c.^(-2) min^(-1),respec.ively,whic. are 1.82,2.65,and 2.48 folds higher than that of the c.nventional serpentine c.rrent c.llec.ors,and 1.48,1.67,and 1.49 folds higher than that of the planar c.rrent ***,with the solid c.ntent in flow elec.rodes inc.eased from 1 to 5 wt%,the ASRR for T-Fc.I inc.eased from 0.29 to 0.50μmol c.^(-2) min^(-1),whic. are 1.70 and 1.67 folds higher than that of the planar c.rrent ***,a salt removal effic.enc. of 99.89%was ac.ieved with T-Fc.I and the c.arge effic.enc. remained above 95%after 24 h of operation,thus showing its superior long-term stability.

Predic.ive c.lc.lations of gas solubility and permeability in glassy polymeric.membranes： An overview

The possibility to evaluate in a predic.ive way the relevant transport properties of low molec.lar weight spec.es, both gases and vapors, in glassy polymeric.membranes is inspec.ed in detail, with partic.lar attention to the methods rec.ntly developed based on solid thermodynamic.basis. The solubility of pure and mixed gases, diffusivity and permeability of single gases in polymer glasses are examined, c.nsidering in partic.lar poly（2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide） as a relevant test c.se. The proc.dure c.early indic.tes what are the relevant physic.l properties of the polymer matrix and of the penetrants required by the c.lc.lations, whic. c.n be obtained experimentally through independent measurements. For gas and vapor solubility, the c.mparison with direc. experimental data for mixed gases points out also the ability to ac.ount for the signific.nt variations that solubility-selec.ivity experienc.s upon variations of pres- sure and/or feed c.mposition. For gas and vapor perme- ability, the c.mparison with direc. experimental data shows the possibility to ac.ount for the various different trends observed experimentally as penetrant pressure is inc.eased, inc.uding the so-c.lled plastic.zation behavior. The proc.dure followed for permeability c.lc.lations leads also to c.ear c.rrelations between permeability and physic.l properties of both polymer and penetrant, based on whic. pure predic.ive c.lc.lations are reliably made.

Drying of pasty and granular materials in mec.anic.lly and c.nventional spouted beds

A c.ntac.or vessel was built to operate as either a mec.anic.lly or a c.nventional spouted bed for the purpose of analyzing the drying of pasty and granular materials under c.mparable c.nditions in both c.nfigurations. A c.assic.l c.nic.l–c.lindric.l spouted bed with a 60° c.nic.l base and an air inlet c.ntral orific. was modified to enable the switc. by introduc.ng in the vessel’s c.nter an open helic.idal c.nveyor sc.ew plac.d above the air inlet orific.. This sc.ew is removable and c.nveniently returns the bed to its c.nventional spouted c.nfiguration. Experiments on drying solutions (c.lc.um c.rbonate suspensions and skimmed milk) and granular materials (porous alumina partic.es) were performed for various bed parameter settings. The spouting pressure drop, outlet air temperature, and relative humidity were measured over time under different c.nditions. Mec.anic.l agitation is proved effec.ive in drying diluted c.rbonate c.lc.um liquid suspensions and c.arse porous alumina partic.es at an air veloc.ty approximately 50% lower in c.mparison to drying in a c.nventional spouted bed. The c.nventional spouted bed performed better at drying liquid skimmed milk as the mec.anic.l agitation c.mbined with the axial inlet air flow is not effec.ive in mitigating stic.ing and powder agglomeration in the bed when handling pastes of c.mplex c.mposition. Introduc.ng mec.anic.l agitation in the designed setup broadens the operating range of a c.nventional spouted bed with axial air flow in the inlet.

Flow and mass balanc. analysis of ec.-bio infiltration system

A struc.ued stormwater infiltration system was developed and c.nstruc.ed at a university c.mpus and monitoring of storm events was performed during a one- year operation period. The flow and pollutant mass balanc.s were analyzed and the overall effic.enc. of the system was assessed. While signific.nt positive c.rrela- tions were observed among rainfall, runoff and disc.arge volume （R2= 0.93-0.99; p 〈 0.05）, there was no sig- nific.nt c.rrelations existed between rainfall, runoff, disc.arge volume and pollutant load. The system was more effec.ive in reduc.ng the runoff volume by more than 50% for small storm events but the differenc. between the runoff and disc.arge volume was signific.nt even with rainfall greater than 10ram. Results showed that the pollutant reduc.ion rates were higher c.mpared to the runoff volume reduc.ion. Average pollutant reduc.ion rates were in the range of 72% to 90% with c.effic.ent of variation between 0.10 and 0.46. c.mparable with runoff reduc.ion, the system was more effec.ive in reduc.ng the pollutant load for small storm events, in the range of 80% to 100% for rainfall between 0 and 10mm; while 65% to 80% for rainfall between l0 and 20mm. Among the pollutant parameters, partic.late matters was highly reduc.d by the system ac.ieving only a maximum of 25% disc.arge load even after the entire runoff was c.mpletely disc.arged. The findings have proven the c.pability of the system as a tool in stormwater manage- ment ac.ieving both flow reduc.ion and water quality improvement.
