Introduction: In recent years, many tests have been developed to assess the mobility and functional capacity of children with motor dysfunctions. The Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS) is a qualitative assessment test of the motor behavior of children aged 4 to 18 years. Purpose: The purpose of the proposed research is to determine the external reliability of the test Pediatric Balance Scale translated for the first time in Greek in children aged 4 to 18 years, in order to have a reliable tool in the hands of experts. Method: 26 children (14 girls and 12 boys with an average age of ±10,673 years of age) participated in this research. The Greek adaptation of the PBS and a Nikon 5300 digital camera for video recording were used for data collection. Results: The results found that there were no statistically significant differences between the two independent evaluators and that the Pediatric Balance Scale test had strong reliability. Overall, the results of the present investigation provided considerable evidence suggesting that the Greek adaptation of the PBS test has good inter-rater reliability and can be used to detect kinetic disorders in children aged 4 to 18 years for the Greek population.

Background Little information exists about the role of anemia in patients with acute coronary syndromes(ACS)admitted to Intensive Cardiac Care Units(ICCU).The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of anemia and its impact on management and outcomes in this clinical setting.Methods All consecutive patients admitted to eight different ICCUs with diagnosis of non-ST segment elevation ACS(NSTEACS)were prospectively included.Anemia was defined as hemoglobin<130 g/L in men and<120 g/L in women.The association between anemia and mortality or readmission at six months was assessed by the Cox regression method.Results A total of 629 patients were included.Mean age was 66.6 years.A total of 197 patients(31.3%)had anemia.Coronary angiography was performed in most patients(96.2%).Patients with anemia were significantly older,with a higher prevalence of comorbidities,poorer left ventricle ejection fraction and higher GRACE score values.Patients with anemia underwent less often coronary angiography,but underwent more often intraaortic counterpulsation,non-invasive mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapies.Both ICCU and hospital stay were significantly longer in patients with anemia.Both the incidence of mortality(HR=3.36,95%CI:1.43–7.85,P=0.001)and the incidence of mortality/readmission were significantly higher in patients with anemia(HR=2.80,95%CI:2.03–3.86,P=0.001).After adjusting for confounders,the association between anemia and mortality/readmission remained significant(P=0.031).Conclusions Almost one of three NSTEACS patients admitted to ICCU had anemia.Most patients underwent coronary angiography.Anemia was independently associated to poorer outcomes at 6 months.

The continence status and the most adequate form of delivery were assessed in pregnant women who had a suburethral band to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI). A group of 57 women selected from different articles published between 2000 and 2014 were reviewed. These women had become pregnant after having undergone a suburethral band procedure. Different aspects such as age, parity, type of band, time elapsed between the procedure and the pregnancy, SUI during pregnancy and after delivery, and the form of delivery were evaluated, as well as the possible relationship with the recurrence of SUI and the emergence of complications associated with the suburethral during pregnancy. A case of a complication related to a suburethral band was found in one patient who developed an episode of pyelonephritis and intermittent urethral obstruction which required a Foley catheter. Thirty patients had cesarean section while 27 had vaginal deliveries;12 patients had incontinence during pregnancy and 15 suffered from it after delivery. Postpartum SUI in relation with the delivery form did not show statistically relevant differences between the cesarean section group and the vaginal delivery group. It was observed that the emergence of SUI during pregnancy was a risk factor for the onset of postpartum SUI (OR = 6.47;p = 0.0137). The risk of developing postpartum SUI seems similar regardless the delivery form, thus it is plausible to recommend vaginal delivery to these patients. If there was a recurrence of SUI, a second suburethral band could be placed which would be as effective as the first one and would involve a lower risk surgery compared to a cesarean section.

AIM： To assess if the included vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） polymorphisms rs3025035, rs3025021 and rs2010963 are associated to proliferative retinopathy in a Mexican population with type 2 diabetes mellitus （T2DM）. METHODS： A case-control study was conducted in adult individuals with T2DM associated to proliferative retinopathy or non-proliferative retinopathy from Oct. 2014 to Jun. 2015 from the Retina Department of the Asociation to Prevent Blindness in Mexico. The selected patients were adults with a diagnosis of T2DM ≥5y. All subjects had a comprehensive ocular examination and the classification of the retinopathy severity was made considering the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study （ETDRS） standardization protocols. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole fresh blood. All samples were genotyped by qPCR for selected VEGF polymorphisms. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was calculated by comparing Chi-square values between the expected and the observed values for genotype counts.RESULTS： In total 142 individuals were enrolled, 71 individuals with T2DM and associated proliferative retinopathy and 71 individuals with non-proliferative retinopathy. One-sided Fisher’s exact test was performed for rs3025021 [OR （95% CI）=0.44（0.08-2.2）; P=0.25] and rs2010963 [OR （95% CI）=0.63（0.25-1.6）; P=0.23]. The minor allelic frequencies obtained were 26% for rs3025021, 10% for rs3025035 and 61% for rs2010963. The pairwise linkage disequilibrium between the three SNP was assessed, and was as follows： rs3025021 vs rs3025035： D’=1.0, r2=0.1043, P≤0.0001; rs3025021 vs rs2010963： D’=0.442, r2=0.0446, P=0.149; rs3025035 vs rs2010963： D’=0.505, r2=0.0214, P=0.142.CONCLUSION： This is the first analysis involving VEGF polymorphisms and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in a Mexican population. A major finding of the present study is that none of the polymorphisms studied was significantly associated with proliferative retinopathy. Introduction: Pediatric Flat Foot (PFF) is a deviation consisting of loss of the Medial Longitudinal Arch in children. Purpose: Aim of this study is to collect information on the recent literature and to investigate through clinical assessment and parental observations the effectiveness of the use of foot orthotics by children with SFFF. Method: 20 children aged 6 - 7 years old with mobility difficulties were evaluated before and after a six-month treatment with orthotics regarding pain, post-game pain, fatigue during game, balance impairment, gait deviations, falls, clumsiness, activity avoidance and worn soles. Results: Study results indicate that foot orthotics (FOs) appears to have a positive impact on the advance of pain, post game pain, gait deviations and worn insoles. It is implied that orthoses have a great potential as a treatment for SFFF. Thorough comprehension of the literature evidence, as well as composition of supplementary studies of larger pediatric populations is essential in order to reach a consensus on the use of foot orthotics (FOs) by children SFFF.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM)and scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET)were used to investigate the electrochemical behaviour of the top surface of the 2098-T351 alloy welded by friction stir welding(FSW).The SVET technique was efficient in identifying the cathodic and anodic weld regions.The welding joint(WJ),which comprises the thermomechanically affected zone(TMAZ)and the stir zone(SZ),was cathodic relative to the heated affected zone(HAZ)and the base metal(BM).The reactivities of the welding joint at the advancing side(AS)and the retreating side(RS)were analyzed and compared using SECM technique in the competition mode by monitoring the dissolved oxygen as a redox mediator in 0.005 mol L^-1 NaCl solution.The RS was more electrochemically active than the AS,and these results were correlated with the microstructural features of the welded alloy.

On 25 October 2014,the International Society of Zoological Sciences(ISZS)family lost one of its most eminent members,Professor Francis Dov Por,who passed away at the age of 87.Dov was born on 25 May 1927,in Timișoara,a city that is now the capital city of Timis County and is considered the informal capital city of the historical region of Banat,Romania.Dov obtained a Diploma in Biology in 1956 from the University of Bucharest.Recognition of his potential as a biologist was demonstrated through his early appointment as a Curator for the Grigore Antipa Museum of Natural History in Bucharest.

The main organic contaminants in municipal wastewater are proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids, which must be hydrolyzed to smaller units. A high concentration of oil and grease in wastewater affects biological wastewater treatment processes by forming a layer on the water surface, which decreased the oxygen transfer rate into the aerobic process. Microbial proteases, lipases, amylases, and celullases should play essential roles in the biological wastewater treatment process. The present study aimed to isolate lipase- and other hydrolytic enzyme-producing microorganisms and assess their degradation capabilities of fat and oil wastewater in the laboratory. We also evaluated microbial interactions as an approach to enhance lipolytic activity. We place emphasis on lipase activity because oil and grease are not only environmental pollutants, but also form an undesirable tough crust on pipes of sewage treatment plants. Thirty-five lipolytic microorganisms from sewage were identified and assessed for hydrolytic enzyme profiles. Lipases were characterized in detail by quantification, chain length affinity, and optimal conditions for activity. The good stability of isolated lipases in the presence of chemical agents, thermal stability, wide range of pH activity and tolerance, and affinity for different lengths of ester chains indicates that some of these enzymes may be good candidates for the hydrolysis of organic compounds present in wastewater. A combination of enzymes and fermenting bacteria may facilitate the complete hydrolysis of triglycerides, proteins, and lingo-cellulose that normally occur in the wastes of industrial processes. This study identifies enzymes and microbial mixtures capable of digesting natural polymeric materials for facilitating the sewage cleaning process.

Male hypogonadism associated with obesity is a very prevalent condition and is increasing in parallel with the epidemic prevalence of obesity. Low testosterone levels promote higher fat mass with reduced lean mass. Male hypogonadism is related to an increase in associated cardiometabolic complications, such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, the metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. Its influence as a comorbidity of obesity is becoming more evident and should be evaluated and treated in at-risk patients. Mechanisms involved in this relationship include body composition changes, the presence of adipokines, insulin resistance, and other factors, some of which are still unknown. Weight loss and treatment to replace testosterone levels improve the metabolic profile and quality of life in patients with obesity and hypogonadism; these beneficial effects depend on treatment modality and duration of therapy. The use of testosterone replacement therapy may be indicated, as it has not been shown to increase cardiovascular risk, and retrospective studies suggest a reduction in events in men with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

The Admiralty Mountains region forms the northern termination of the northern victoria Land,Antarctica.Few quantitative data are available to reconstruct the Cenozoic morpho-tectonic evolution of this sector of the Antarctic plate,where the Admiralty Mountains region forms the northern termination of the western shoulder of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic West Antarctica Rift System.In this study we combine new low-temperature thermochronological data(apatite fission-track and(U-Th-Sm)/He analyses)with structural and topography analysis.The regional pattern of the fission-track ages shows a general tendency to older ages(80-60 Ma)associated with shortened mean track-lengths in the interior,and younger fission-track ages clustering at 38-26 Ma with long mean track-lengths in the coastal region.Differently from other regions of victoria Land,the younger ages are found as far as 50-70 km inland.Single grain apatite(U-Th-Sm)/He ages cluster at 50-30 Ma with younger ages in the coastal domain.Topography analysis reveals that the Admiralty Mountains has high local relief,with an area close to the coast,180 km long and 70 km large,having the highest local relief of>2500 m.This coincides with the location of the youngest fission-track ages.The shape of the area with highest local relief matches the shape of a recently detected low velocity zone beneath the northern TAM,indicating that high topography of the Admiralty Mountains region is likely sustained by a mantle thermal anomaly.We used the obtained constraints on the amount of removed crustal section to reconstruct back-eroded profiles and calculate the erosional load in order to test flexural uplift models.We found that our back-eroded profiles are better reproduced by a constant elastic thickness of intermediate values(Te=20-30 km).This suggests that,beneath the Admiralty Mountains,the elastic properties of the lithosphere are different with respect to other TAM sectors,likely due to a stationary Cenozoic upper mantle thermal anomaly in the region.
