Assessing Naturalness Changes Resulting from a Historical Land Use in Brazil South Region: An Analysis of the 1986-2016 Period

The effects of land use and cover changes and the application of the Urbanity Index were analyzed to identify critical or non-critical naturalness scenery in the Northern Region of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), over a period of 30 years. Between 1986 and 2016, the main significant land use change was the reduction of the agricultural anthropic and the increase of the natural vegetation land use areas. About 90% - 80% of the total study areas were characterized by anthropic pattern features, with a predominantly agricultural matrix. The conversion of agricultural anthropic into natural areas resulted in increased naturalness landscape and a gain in the stock of natural capital. The increase in the natural vegetation area, mainly to the north and east of the region, set in a steep relief, became remarkable after 1990. The Urbanity Index values evidenced a highest naturalness condition (natural vegetation areas) to the northern and eastern, while a smaller naturalness condition (agricultural and non-agricultural areas) to the southern and western and central of the Northern Region of Rio Grande do Sul. These changes are related to a non-impaired (northern and eastern) and a impaired scenery (southern, western and central portion) of the ecological sustainability of the Northern Region of Rio Grande do Sul, after a 30-year period (1986-2016). These results pointed out that land use transitions resulted in a consolidated farming scenario in which agricultural intensification coincided with the reduction of farming area and increased naturalness as a reverse trend to the agricultural frontier dynamics.

Cylindrospermopsin in Water Supply Reservoirs in Brazil Determined by Immunochemical and Molecular Methods

It is reported for the first time in Brazil and South America the presence of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) in water supply reservoirs. CYN is a powerful hepatotoxic alkaloid implicated in outbreaks of human sicknesses. We detected CYN in different sources of water in Northeastern Brazil using molecular and immunological techniques. The highest concentrations of toxin occurred in the Jucazinho reservoir with the phytoplankton containing the potentially CYN-producing C. raciborskii and Sphaerospermopsis aphanizomenoides (previously known as Aphanizomenon aphanizomenoides). The polyketide synthase (PKS) and peptide synthetase (PS), which are directly related to the ability to produce CYN, were found in all the analyzed samples. The result of the present study emphasizes the need to improve monitoring of CYN in water bodies used for drinking and recreation, in order to avoid exposure of human populations to this toxin.

Evaluation of Taping in the Lymphatic System through Lymphoscintigraphy of Upper and Lower Limbs: A Case Study

Introduction: Lymphatic taping has been used extensively in several areas of physical therapy, and has been prominent in the treatment of edema. Its results are considered empirical and no study reports its effect observed by a lymphocyte count study. Purpose: To verify the performance of lymphatic taping in the lymphatic system using lymphoscintigraphy examination. Methods: A 44-year-old male patient with no clinical signs of lymphatic alteration underwent lymphoscintigraphy examination prior to and after application of lymphatic taping in the upper and lower limbs on different days of placement to verify if the use of lymphatic taping may influence the lymph flow. Results: The result was an improvement in the lymphatic flow with application of lymphatic taping only in the lower limbs, where the taping acted only for 24 hours. There was a greater amount of radiopharmaceutical extracted in the feet of the patient, comparing pre- and post-application of taping. At the foot of the left lower limb, the absorption ratio doubled. There was also improvement in the right limb, but on a smaller scale. Conclusion: Through the evaluation of the lymphatic system by lymphoscintigraphy it can be observed that the values analyzed are relatively higher when the patient has lymphatic taping applied with both 10% and 20% of tension in the lower limbs.

Optimization of Biosurfactant Production from Glycerol by Pseudomonas Aeruginosa EQ 109 Using Factorial Design 2^3

One possible application for the excess of glycerol, which is an exceeding byproduct in biodiesel industry, was used as carbon and energy sources for bioproducts synthesis. This work aims to evaluate biosurfactant production from glycerol by Pseudomonas aeruginosa EQ 109 isolated from crude oil-contaminated soil. Factorial design 2^3 was utilized to optimize the amount of biosurfactant produced, by using pH （A）, initial biomass concentration （B）, and initial glycerol concentration （C） as independent factors. The experiments were carried out in flasks containing 100 mL of mineral medium. Biosurfactant production was monitored by increase of the emulsification of aviation kerosene （E24） and surface tension reduction （STr）. The results have shown that, at pH = 7.0, in order to increase E24, variables as B and C are the most influential, leading to a maximum value of E24 = 79%, as well as for an increase of GC （GCmax = 49%）. STR was the variable with the best correlation factor for the proposed linear model （R2=0.96） and its maximum value was 48%. Xfwas not significant to the model, although it was influenced by pH and C, with C = 40g/L （Xfmax = 4.56 g/L）.

Wood Ash Fertilization on Structural Characteristics and Chlorophyll Index of Tropical Forage Grasses

The appropriate nutrient supply via fertilization is essential for an adequate plant growth and development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural characteristics and chlorophyll index of Marandu and Xaraes grasses fertilized with wood ash. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse;the experimental design was entirely randomized, with 12 treatments and six replications arranged in a 2 × 6 factorial scheme: two forage grasses (Marandu and Xaraes) and six wood ash doses (0;3;6;9;12;and 15 g·dm-3). Each plot was composed of pots with 7 dm3 soil and five plants. Soil moisture was maintained by the gravimetric method at 60% of the maximum soil water retention capacity. Three harvests of the plant aerial part were performed at 30-day intervals. The evaluated characteristics were plant height, leaf number, tiller number, and chlorophyll index. Results were submitted to the variance analysis by F test and, after verification of the significant effects on Marandu and Xaraes characteristics, were also submitted to Tukey test;the wood ash doses were evaluated according to the regression analysis at 5% probability. Wood ash doses ranging from 10.15 to 15 g·dm-3 resulted in quadratic responses of plant height, leaf number, and tiller number for both Marandu and Xaraes grasses. The highest values of chlorophyll index derived from wood ash doses of 9.44 and 10.92 g·dm-3, with increments greater than 50%, 25%, and 9% at the first, second, and third harvests, respectively. The wood ash, when used as a fertilizer, improves structural characteristics and increases chlorophyll indices of Marandu and Xaraes grasses cultivated in Cerrado Rhodic Hapludox.

Effects of Temperature and Concentration on the Rheological Behavior of Polyacrylamide-Based Polymers

Polymers are high molecular weight molecules that provide high viscosity at low concentrations to the media they are inserted. In the oil industry, they are used for enhanced oil recovery and for drilling fluids, where its viscosity is an important factor for a greater efficiency. From all the polymers used by industry, the polyacrylamide and the biopolymer xantham gum are those, which appear significantly in those applications. Taking that into consideration, this work intends to study the effects of the physical, chemical and structural parameters of those polymers in their rheological behaviour, by varying their concentrations from 400 ppm to 2,000 ppm and their temperatures from 298 K to 328 K, which are values similar to those found in the field. For that, a Brookfield Viscometer-Brookfield Engineering Labs rheometer was used. The results acquired showed that the increase on the polyacrylamides ionicity generates and increase on the medium viscosity. For the temperature, its increase causes a reduction of viscosity for the low ionicity polyacrylamides, while increases the viscosity for the high ionicity ones. In the comparative study between xantham gum and polyacrylamides, it was possible to notice that, even though the biopolymer is more complex, its viscosity still is lower when compared to the polyacrylamides.

Helicobacter pylori(***)is a gram-negative bacterium that infects approximately 4.4 billion individuals ***,its prevalence varies among different geographic areas,and is influenced by several *** infection can be acquired by means of oral-oral or fecal-oral transmission,and the pathogen possesses various mechanisms that improve its capacity of mobility,adherence and manipulation of the gastric microenvironment,making possible the colonization of an organ with a highly acidic *** addition,*** presents a large variety of virulence factors that improve its pathogenicity,of which we highlight cytotoxin associated antigen A,vacuolating cytotoxin,duodenal ulcer promoting gene A protein,outer inflammatory protein and gamma-glutamyl *** host immune system,mainly by means of a Th1-polarized response,also plays a crucial role in the infection *** most ***-positive individuals remain asymptomatic,the infection predisposes the development of various clinical conditions as peptic ulcers,gastric adenocarcinomas and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue *** and non-invasive diagnostic methods,each of them with their related advantages and limitations,have been applied in *** ***,bacterial resistance to antimicrobial therapy is a major challenge in the treatment of this infection,and new therapy alternatives are being tested to improve *** *** but not least,the development of effective vaccines against *** infection have been the aim of several research studies.

Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant,antibacterial and bacterial cell agglutination activities of the hexane(Hex) and 70%ethanol(70%EtOH) extracts of two species of red seaweeds Pterocladiella capillacea(***) and Osmundaria ***:In vitro antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging assay,ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay,ferrous ion chelating assay,β-carotene bleaching assay and total phenolic content *** activity was tested using the method of disc diffusion on Mueller-Hinton *** ability of algal extracts to agglutinate bacterial cells was also ***:The 70%EtOH extract of the two algae showed the highest values of total phenolic content compared to the Hex *** results of DPPH for both extracts(Hex,70%EtOH) of Osmundaria obtusiloba(43.46%and 99.47%) were higher than those of ***(33.04%and 40.81%) at a concentration of 1 000 μg/*** for the ferrous ion chelating,there was an opposite behavior,extracts of *** had a higher *** extracts showed a low ferric-reducing antioxidant power,with optical density ranging from0.054 to *** activities of all extracts evaluated for β-carotene bleaching were above 40%.There was no antibacterial activity against bacterial strains ***,the extracts of both species were able to agglutinate bacterial Gram positive cells of Staphylococcus aureus and Gram negative cells of Escherichia coli,multidrug-resistant Salmonella and Vibrio *** This is the first report of the interaction between these algal extracts,rich in natural compounds with antioxidant potential,and Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial cells.

Forest production and growth are obtained from statistical models that allow the generation of information at the tree or forest stand *** the use of regression models is common in forest measurement,there is a constant search for estimation procedures that provide greater ***,machine learning techniques have been used with satisfactory performance in measuring ***,methods such as Adaptive NeuroFuzzy Inference System(ANFIS)and Random Forest are relatively poorly studied for predicting the volume of wood in eucalyptus plantations in ***,it is essential to check whether these techniques can provide gains in terms of ***,this study aimed to evaluate the use of Random Forest and ANFIS techniques in the prognosis of forest *** data used come from continuous forest inventories carried out in stands of eucalyptus *** data were divided into 70%for training and 30%for *** algorithms used to generate rules in ANFIS were Subtractive Clustering and ***,training was done with the hybrid algorithm(descending gradient and least squares)with the number of seasons ranging from 1 to *** RFs were trained,varying the number of trees from 50 to 850 and the number of observations by five leaves to *** neural networks and decision trees were also trained to compare the feasibility of the *** evaluation of the estimates generated by the techniques for training and validation was calculated based on the following statistics:correlation coefficient(r),relative Bias(RB),and the relative root mean square error(RRMSE)in *** general,the techniques studied in this work showed excellent performance for the training and validation data set with RRMSE values*** RF presented inferior statistics about the ANFIS for the prognosis of forest *** Subtractive Clustering(SC)and Fuzzy-C-Means(FCM)algorithms provide accurate baseline
