Landscape changes have caused the decline of biodiversity and affected the integrity of aquatic *** this study,we assessed the influence of industrialization associated with urban developm.nt on aquatic environm.nts and the biodiversity of sem.aquatic bugs(Gerrom.rpha)at different scales(water quality,habitat,and landscape).Using the sim.le buffer m.thod,we evaluated nine stream. assessing water quality variables,habitat structure,and linear features(radius¼300 m.length¼600 m.for the percentage of land use and land *** results found that species com.osition of Gerrom.rpha was m.inly affected by prim.ry forest cover,habitat integrity,leaves substrate,and water tem.erature(29%explanation),and the species richness was m.stly influenced by the habitat integrity index(HII)and phosphorus *** m.del that best explained the variation in species richness showed a positive relationship with phosphorus concentrations and HII(43%variation).Therefore,our results show that those hum.n activities are the m.in factors altering aquatic biodiversity from.local to regional ***,the retention of riparian forests–even in urban and industrialized areas–can m.intain the diversity of sem.aquatic insect species by providing suitable environm.nts for the habitat,feeding,and reproductive requirem.nts of these aquatic ***,our results also show that the m.nagem.nt of riparian vegetation in urban areas and industrial com.lexes prom.tes aquatic biodiversity conservation in regions under developm.nt in the Am.zon.

Cholecystectom. and the risk of alim.ntary tract cancers:A system.tic review

AIm. To investigate the association between cholecystectom. and gastro-intestinal tract(GIT) ***: We conducted a system.tic review according to the PRISm. guidelines. A m.DLINE search was perform.d with predefined search criteria for English Language articles on the association between cholecystectom. and GIT cancers. Additional articles were retrieved by m.nual search of references. All relevant articles were accessed in full text. Data onstudy type; cases; controls; country; effect estim.te; adjustm.nts for confounders and quality of publication were extracted. The quality of the publications were scored by adherence to the STROBE checklist. The data for each part of the GIT were presented in separate ***: Seventy-five studies and 5 m.ta-analyses satisfied the predefined criteria for inclusion and were included in this review. There were inconsistent reports and no strong evidence of an association between cholecystectom. and cancers of the oesophagus(Adenocarcinom.), pancreas, sm.ll bowel and rightsided colon cancers. In squam.us cancer of the oesophagus, cancers of the stom.ch, liver, bile ducts, sm.ll bowel and left sided colon cancers, good quality studies suggested a lack of association with cholecystectom.. Equally, distal colon and rectal cancers were found not to be associated with cholecystectom.. Several m.chanism. for carcinogenesis/prom.tion of carcinogensis have been proposed. These have focused on a role for bile salts in carcinogenesis with several potential m.tagenic m.lecular events and gut m.tabolic horm.nes signaling cell proliferation or initiation of ***: This is a com.rehensive review of the association between GIT cancers and cholecystectom.. This case report describes the surgical rem.val of cem.ntoblastom. associated with apicoectom. and endodontic therapy. The patient, an 18-year-old m.n, presented pain in the region of the m.ndibular body on the right side. On clinical exam. bone expansion was observed in the region at the bottom.of the vestibular sulcus, pain on palpation, slight extrusion of tooth 46 with presence of pulp vitality. Radiographic exam. dem.nstrated the presence of a radiopaque area and discrete radiolucent halo associated with the root of tooth 46, suggesting the diagnosis of cem.ntoblastom.. Endodontic treatm.nt of tooth 46 was perform.d and exeresis of the lesion by apicoectom.. Twelve m.nths after the first surgery, recurrence of the lesion was observed, and a new apicoectom. was necessary, this tim. up to the m.ddle third of the root. Clinical radiographic control 12 m. after the second surgical intervention dem.nstrated absence of signs and sym.tom., radiographic repair, with tooth 46 shown to be fully functional.

AIm.To determ.ne the prevalence of epstein-barr virus(eb V)-associated gastric carcinom.s in the North Region of Portugal and to study its clinicopathological characteristics. m.THODS We have perform.d a retrospective study including a total of 179 consecutive patients with gastric cancer(GC) subm.tted to gastrectom. during 2011 at the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto. Clinical and pathological data was collected from.individual clinical records and inserted on a database with unique codification. Tum.ur tissues were collected from.the institutional tum.ur bank. eb V was detected by in situ hybridization for the detection of eb V-encoded sm.ll RNAs(ebe Rs) and eb V latent proteins(Lm.1 and Lm.2 A) were detected by *** The analysis showed that eb V-associated gastric carcinom.s(eb Va GC) represents 8.4%(15/179) of all GC cases, with a significant differential distribution am.ng histological types(P m.dullary carcinom.s, 100%(1/1) of adenosquam.us carcinom., 8.7%(8/92) of tubular adenocarcinom.s, 8.0%(2/25) of m.xed carcinom.s and 2%(1/51) in poorly cohesive carcinom.s. The analysis revealed a higher predom.nance of eb Va GC in the upper third and m.ddle(cardia, fundus and body) of the stom.ch(P = 0.041), a significant lower num.er of regional lym.h nodes invasion(P = 0.025) and a tendency for better prognosis(P = 0.222). eb V latent protein expression revealed that all eb Va GC cases were Lm.1-negative, nevertheless 6 cases(40%) expressed LPm. A, which reveals that these cases show a distinct eb V-Latency profile(latency II-like).CONCLUSION eb Va GC represents 8.4% of all GC in the North Region of Portugal. The eb V-infected patients have specific clinic-pathological features that should be further explored to develop new strategies of m.nagem.nt and treatm.nt.

Transcriptom.c responses to drought stress in the Patagonian southern beech Nothofagus alpina

Background Deciphering the genetic architecture of drought tolerance could allow the candidate genes identification responding to water stress. In the Andean Patagonian forest, the genus Nothofagus represents an ecologically relevant species to be included in different genom.c studies. These studies are scarce in South Am.rican ecosystem. however represent an im.ortant source of genom.c data in order to interpret future clim.te-change environm.nt scenarios of these em.lem.tic forests. Here, we achieved the assem.lage of the transcriptom. of N. alpina while searching for key genes of activated or suppressed m.tabolic pathways in response to drought *** De novo transcriptom. assem.ly resulted in 104,030 transcripts. Following confirm.tion of drought conditions, based on reduction of leaf water potential and stom.tal conductance, a differential gene expression analysis resulted in 2720 significantly expressed genes(1601 up-regulated and 1119 down-regulated). Enrichm.nt analysis(over-representation analysis and gene set enrichm.nt analysis) resulted in m.re than one hundred stress-responsive term.ontologies(i.e. biological processes) and pathways. Term. such as response to abscisic acid and pathways such as plant horm.ne signal transduction or starch and sucrose m.tabolism.were over-represented. Protein–protein interaction assessm.nt resulted in networks with significantly expressed top com.on hub gene clusters(e.g. planttype cell wall biogenesis am.ng down-regulated or ABA-signalling am.ng up-regulated). These networks evidenced im.ortant regulators at gene expression such as transcriptional *** Responses of N. alpina seedlings to drought stress were evidenced by the activation of several genes linked to GO biological processes and KEGG pathways, which were m.inly based on over-expression of specific protein kinases, phosphatases, synthases and transcription factors. Apoptosis induced by a low-carbohydrate and high-protein diet in rat livers

AIm. To determ.ne whether high-protein, high-fat, and low-carbohydrate diets can cause lesions in rat ***: We random.y divided 20 fem.le Wistar rats into a control diet group and an experim.ntal diet group. Anim.ls in the control group received an AIN-93 m.diet, and anim.ls in the experim.ntal group received an Atkins-based diet(59.46% protein, 31.77% fat, and 8.77% carbohydrate). After 8 wk, the rats were anesthetized and exsanguinated for transam.nases analysis, and their livers were rem.ved for flow cytom.try, im.unohistochem.stry, and light m.croscopy studies. We expressed the data as m.an ± standard deviation(sd) assum.ng unpaired and param.tric data; we analyzed differences using the student's t-test. statistical significance was set at P m. alanine am.notransferase and aspartate am.notransferase levels were significantly higher in the experim.ntal group than in the control group. According to flow cytom.try, the percentages of nonviable cells were 11.67% ± 1.12% for early apoptosis, 12.07% ± 1.11% for late apoptosis, and 7.11% ± 0.44% for non-apoptotic death in the experim.ntal diet group and 3.73% ± 0.50% for early apoptosis, 5.67% ± 0.72% for late apoptosis, and 3.82% ± 0.28% for non-apoptotic death in the control diet group. The m.an percentage of early apoptosis was higher in the experim.ntal diet group than in the control diet group. Im.unohistochem.stry for autophagy was negative in both groups. sinusoidal dilation around the central vein and sm.ll hepatocytes was only observed in the experim.ntal diet group, and fibrosis was not identified by hem.toxylin-eosin or Trichrom. m.sson staining in either ***: Eight weeks of an experim.ntal diet resulted in cellular and histopathological lesions in rat livers. Apoptosis was our principal finding; elevated plasm. transam.nases dem.nstrate hepatic lesions.

Paclitaxel （PTX）, one of the m.st effective cytotoxins for the treatm.nt of breast and lung cancer, is lim.ted by its severe side effects and low tum.r selectivity. In this work hollow-poly（4-vinylpyridine）（hollow-p4VP） nanoparticles （NPs） have been used for the first tim. to generate PTX@p4VP NPs, em.loying a novel technique in which a gold core in the center of the NP is further oxidized to produce the hollow structure into which PTX m.lecules can be incorporated. The hollow-p4VP NPs exhibit good physicochem.cal properties and displayed excellent biocom.atibility when tested on blood （no hem.lysis） and cell cultures （no cytotoxicity）. Interestingly, PTX@p4VP NPs significantly increased PTX cytotoxicity in hum.n lung （A-549） and breast （m.F-7） cancer cells with a significant reduction of PTX ICs0 （from.5.9 to 3.6 nm.in A-549 and from.13.75 to 4.71 nm.in m.F-7）. In addition, PTX@p4VP caused a decrease in volum. of A-549 and m.F-7 m.lticellular tum.r spheroids （m.S）, an in vitro system.that m.m.cs in vivo tum.rs, in com.arison to free PTX. This increased antitum.ral activity is accom.anied by efficient cell internalization and increased apoptosis, especially in lung cancer m.S. Our results offer the first evidence that hollow- p4VP NPs can im.rove the antitum.ral activity of PTX. This system.can be used as a new nanoplatform.to overcom. the lim.tations of current breast and lung cancer treatm.nts.

Alpha-synuclein （a-syn） deposition in Lewy bodies （LB） is one of the m.in neuropathological hallm.rks of Parkinson＇s disease （PD）. LB accum.lation is considered a causative factor of PD, which suggests that strategies aim.d at reducing a-syn levels could be relevant for its treatm.nt. In the present study, we developed novel nanocarriers suitable for system.c delivery of sm.ll interfering ribonucleic acid （siRNA） that were specifically designed to reduce neuronal α-syn by RNA interference. Anionic liposom.s loaded with an siRNA-protam.ne com.lex for α-syn gene silencing and decorated with a rabies virus glycoprotein （RVG）-derived peptide as a targeting agent were prepared. The nanoparticles were characterized for their ability to load, protect, and deliver the functional siRNA to m.use prim.ry hippocam.al and cortical neurons as well as their efficiency to induce gene silencing in these cells. m.reover, the nanocarriers were evaluated for their stability in serum. The RVG-decorated liposom.s displayed suitable characteristics for future in vivo applications and successfully induced α-syn gene silencing in prim.ry neurons without altering cell viability. Collectively, our results indicate that RVG-decorated liposom.s m.y be an ideal tool for further studies aim.d at achieving efficient in vivo α-syn gene silencing in m.use m.dels of PD.
