Exclusive breastfeeding greater than 50%, success of education in a university hospital in Bogotá: Case-control study

BACKGROUND Maintenance rates of exclusive breastfeeding(EBF)worldwide are low,thus,one of the objectives of the summary of policies on breastfeeding(BF)in world nutrition goals for 2025 are that at least 50%of infants under six months of age receive EBF that year.The Objective of this study is to document the rates of EBF in children born in San Ignacio University Hospital(HUSI)and identify factors associated with maintenance.AIM To document the percentages of EBF in those that were born at HUSI and identify factors associated to their maintenance.METHODS This is a study of cases and controls in an analytic,retrospective cohort that took children born alive between January 2016 and January 2019 at HUSI located in the city of Bogotá,Colombia.RESULTS Receiving information about BF at HUSI was able to maintain EBF up until 4 mo(OR=1.65;95%CI:1.02-2.66).The presence of gynecologic and obstetric comorbidities(OR=0.32;95%CI:0.12-0.83),having mastitis(OR=0.56;95%CI:0.33-0.94),and receiving information from mass media(OR=0.52;95%CI:0.31-0.84)are factors associated with not maintaining EBF.CONCLUSION Receiving education at a Women-and Child-Friendly Institution was the only significant factor to achieve EBF until 4 mo,with a frequency greater than the one reported in the country,which matches multiple studies where counseling and individualized support on BF achieve this purpose.Knowledge about BF and early detection of obstetric/gynecologic complications must be strengthened among the healthcare staff in charge of mothers during post-partum.Additionally,strategies must be promoted to continue BF such as creating milk banks with the objective of increasing BF rates even when mothers return to work.

Seizures of agrochemical formulations have increased in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul is among the Brazilian states with the highest number of seizures of these products obtained illicitly. The use of illicit formulations can cause significant harm to agricultural production, the environment, and non-target species. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress of a seized formulation containing the herbicide imazethapyr (IMZT). Characterization of the herbicide included gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and thermal analyses (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)). Hemolytic and cytotoxicity assays in ZF-L hepatic cells showed IC50 values of 12.75 µg/mL, 3.01 µg/mL, 2.67 µg/mL, and 1.61 µg/mL for erythrocytes, [3(4,5-dimethyl)-2 bromide-5 diphenyl tetrazolium] (MTT), neutral red (NR), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays, respectively. The median IC50 of 2.84 µg/mL was used in oxidative stress assays, revealing increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, reduced total sulfhydryl content, and decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. This study is the first to report in vitro oxidative stress induced by IMZT in the ZF-L cell line, emphasizing the importance of in vitro assays for assessing the toxic effects of seized agrochemicals on human health and the environment.

Sex dimorphism and metabolic profiles in management of metabolic-associated fatty liver disease

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)refers to the build-up of fat in the liver associated with metabolic dysfunction and has been estimated to affect a quarter of the population worldwide.Although metabolism is highly influenced by the effects of sex hormones,studies of sex differences in the incidence and progression of MAFLD are scarce.Metabolomics represents a powerful approach to studying these differences and identifying potential biomarkers and putative mechanisms.First,metabolomics makes it possible to obtain the molecular phenotype of the individual at a given time.Second,metabolomics may be a helpful tool for classifying patients according to the severity of the disease and obtaining diagnostic biomarkers.Some studies demonstrate associations between circulating metabolites and early and established MAFLD,but little is known about how metabolites relate to and encompass sex differences in disease progression and risk management.In this review,we will discuss the epidemiological metabolomic studies for sex differences in the development and progression of MAFLD,the role of metabolic profiles in understanding mechanisms and identifying sex-dependent biomarkers,and how this evidence may help in the future management of the disease.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)prevalence has increased drastically in recent decades,affecting up to 25%of the world’s population.NAFLD is a spectrum of different diseases that starts with asymptomatic steatosis and continues with development of an inflammatory response called steatohepatitis,which can progress to fibrosis.Several molecular and metabolic changes are required for the hepatocyte to finally vary its function;hence a“multiple hit”hypothesis seems a more accurate proposal.previous studies and current knowledge suggest that in most cases,NAFLD initiates and progresses through most of nine hallmarks of the disease,although the triggers and mechanisms for these can vary widely.The use of animal models remains crucial for understanding the disease and for developing tools based on biological knowledge.Among certain requirements to be met,a good model must imitate certain aspects of the human NAFLD disorder,be reliable and reproducible,have low mortality,and be compatible with a simple and feasible method.Metabolism studies in these models provides a direct reflection of the workings of the cell and may be a useful approach to better understand the initiation and progression of the disease.Metabolomics seems a valid tool for studying metabolic pathways and crosstalk between organs affected in animal models of NAFLD and for the discovery and validation of relevant biomarkers with biological understanding.In this review,we provide a brief introduction to NAFLD hallmarks,the five groups of animal models available for studying NAFLD and the potential role of metabolomics in the study of experimental NAFLD.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a disease characterized by upper and lower motor neuron(MN)loss with a signature feature of cytoplasmic aggregates containing TDp-43,which are detected in nearly all patients.Mutations in the gene that encodes TDp-43(TARBDp)are known to result in both familial and sporadic ALS.In ALS,disruption of neuro-muscular junctions(NMJs)constitutes a critical event in disease pathogenesis,leading to denervation atrophy,motor impairments and disability.Morphological defects and impaired synaptic transmission at NMJs have been reported in several TDp-43 animal models and in vitro,linking TDp-43 dysregulation to the loss of NMJ integrity in ALS.Through the lens of the dying-back and dying-forward hypotheses of ALS,this review discusses the roles of TDp-43 related to synaptic function,with a focus on the potential molecular mechanisms occurring within MNs,skeletal muscles and glial cells that may contribute to NMJ disruption in ALS.

progressive osseous heteroplasia(pOH)is an ultra-rare autosomal dominant disabling disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification(HO).It is caused by heterozygous inactivating mutations in the GNAS(guanine nucleotide-binding protein alpha-stimulating activity polypeptide)gene.However,the molecular mechanisms underlying HO remain poorly understood.As a treatment for pOH is not yet available,the identification of the mechanisms driving pOH in affected tissues using gene expression may be of great help to underestand the molecular basis of pOH and develop new therapeutic approaches.

Mechanism of superlubricity of a DLC/Si_(3)N_(4) contact in the presence of castor oil and other green lubricants

To meet the surging needs in energy efficiency and eco-friendly lubricants,a novel superlubricious technology using a vegetable oil and ceramic materials is proposed.By coupling different hydrogen-free amorphous carbon coatings with varying fraction of sp^(2) and sp^(3) hybridized carbon in presence of a commercially available silicon nitride bulk ceramic,castor oil provides superlubricity although the liquid vegetable oil film in the contact is only a few nanometres thick at most.Besides a partial liquid film possibly separating surfaces in contact,local tribochemical reactions between asperities are essential to maintain superlubricity at low speeds.High local pressure activates chemical degradation of castor oil generating graphitic/graphenic-like species on top of asperities,thus helping both the chemical polishing of surface and its chemical passivation by H and OH species.particularly,the formation of the formation of–(CH_(2)–CH_(2))n–noligomers have been evidenced to have a major role in the friction reduction.Computer simulation unveils that formation of chemical degradation products of castor oil on friction surfaces are favoured by the quantity of sp^(2)-hybridized carbon atoms in the amorphous carbon structure.Hence,tuning sp^(2)-carbon content in hydrogen-free amorphous carbon,in particular,on the top layers of the coating,provides an alternative way to control superlubricity achieved with castor oil and other selected green lubricants.

In-vivo evaluation of molybdenum as bioabsorbable stent candidate

Biodegradable stents have tremendous theoretical potential as an alternative to bare metal stents and drug-eluting stents for the treatment of obstructive coronary artery disease.Any bioresorbable or biodegradable scaffold material needs to possess optimal mechanical properties and uniform degradation behavior that avoids local and systemic toxicity.Recently,molybdenum(Mo)has been investigated as a potential novel biodegradable material for this purpose.With its proven moderate degradation rate and excellent mechanical properties,Mo may represent an ideal source material for clinical cardiac and vascular applications.The present study was performed to evaluate the mechanical performance of metallic Mo in vitro and the biodegradation properties in vivo.The results demonstrated favorable mechanical behavior and a uniform degradation profile as desired for a new generation ultra-thin degradable endovascular stent material.Moreover,Mo implants in mouse arteries avoided the typical cellular response that contributes to restenosis.There was minimal neointimal hyperplasia over 6 months,an absence of excessive smooth muscle cell(SMC)proliferation or inflammation near the implant,and avoidance of significant harm to regenerating endothelial cells(EC).Qualitative inspection of kidney sections showed a potentially pathological remodeling of kidney Bowman’s capsule and glomeruli,indicative of impaired filtering function and development of kidney disease,although quantifications of these morphological changes were not statistically significant.Together,the results suggest that the products of Mo corrosion may exert beneficial or inert effects on the activities of inflammatory and arterial cells,while exerting potentially toxic effects in the kidneys that warrant further investigation.

Multifocal intraocular lenses(IOLs) are currently usually implanted for the treatment of cataracts because they have been proved to be superior to monofocal IOLs with respect to spectacle independence. In turn, they are associated with a higher prevalence of dysphotopsia symptoms that is one of the most common causes of patient dissatisfaction. Neuroadaptation seems to play a major role in the optimal adaptation to multifocal IOLs. In this context, the development of strategies that facilitate the neuroadaptation process to multifocality might be an effective strategy to reduce patients' dissatisfaction. Video games have been proved to be effective for the improvement of visual acuity and for the promotion of neuroplasticity in elderly subjects and other populations with cortical-related visual impairment. This narrative review highlights the physiological potential of video games as a perceptual strategy to improve visual acuity and promote neuroplasticity in patients using multifocalIOLs, although research is still needed to confirm these benefits in this specific population, with only one comparative study to this date providing evidence of them.
