Electrospun fibers of shape memory triethoxysilane-terminated poly(epsilon-caprolactone)(PCL-TES)loaded with bioactive glasses(BG)are here *** PCL-TES,as well as PCL/BG nanocomposite fibers,are also considered for *** is proposed that hydrolysis and condensation reactions take place between triethoxysilane groups of the polymer and the silanol groups at the BG particle surface,thus generating additional crosslinking points with respect to those present in the PCL-TES *** as-spun PCL-TES/BG fibers display excellent shape memory properties,in terms of shape fixity and shape recovery ratios,without the need of a thermal crosslinking *** particles confer in vitro bioactivity to PCL-based nanocomposite fibers and favor the precipitation of hydroxycarbonate apatite on the fiber *** cytocompatibility tests demonstrate that the addition of BG particles to PCL-based polymer does not inhibit ST-2 cell *** novel approach of using bioactive glasses not only for their biological properties,but also for the enhancement of shape memory properties of PCL-based polymers,widens the versatility and suitability of the obtained composite fibers for a huge portfolio of biomedical applications.

Fertilization is required for optimum plant growth, particularly in unfertile soils, while optimizing nutrient use effciency is an alternative to reduce inorganic fertilizer needs and reduce environmental problems caused by nutrient leaching. This study investigated soil properties and cowpea yield responses to biochars(BCs) made from different feedstocks, baby corn peel biochar(BC1), branches of mango tree biochar(BC2), and rice husk biochar(BC3), applied in combination with nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium(NPK) *** experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using an acid sandy soil(Arenosol) that was submitted for 70 d to the following eight treatments: i) control;ii) full dose of NPK(a commercial compound fertilizer(12-24-12 of N-P2O5-K2O)+ urea(46% N));iii) BC1+ half dose of NPK;iv) BC1 + full dose of NPK;v) BC2 + half dose of NPK;vi) BC2 + full dose of NPK;vii) BC3 + half dose of NPK;and viii) BC3 + full dose of NPK. All biochars were applied at a rate of 0.9%(weight/weight), and each type of biochar was combined with half and full doses of NPK fertilizers. Soil pH increased significantly(P < 0.05) in treatments with BC1 and BC2,while cation exchange capacity(CEC) and available P were higher in the treatments with BC1;BC1 and BC2 also induced higher activity of enzymes related to the P cycle and higher cowpea yield. Similar soil properties and cowpea yield parameters were obtained with the full and half doses of NPK fertilizers for each type of biochar used. In conclusion, biochars in the combination with NPK fertilizers improved soil chemistry and enzymatic activities, allowing reduced fertilizer application and food production costs in the acid soil studied.

Phosphorus(P)deficiency is one of the main constraints on crop production in Arenosols(acid sandy soil).The high cost of P fertilizers may represent an insurmountable obstacle in many poor countries,leaving the exploitation of their own calcareous and phosphate rocks as the only low-cost and long-term *** is suggested to have positive effects on soil properties;however,there is no published research on the synergistic effects of biochar and rocky materials in modifying soil *** aim of this study was to investigate the chemical and biochemical responses of an acid Arenosol treated with phosphate rock(PR),calcareous rock(CR),and biochar(BC),and the implications for corn yield.A soil from Marracuene District,Mozambique was used,where corn was grown for 90 d with the soil treated with:no addition(control),water-soluble zinc phosphite fertilizer(WSP),PR,WSP+CR,WSP+BC,WSP+CR+BC,PR+BC,and PR+CR+*** was produced by pyrolysis of babycorn peels for 4 h at 450?C and applied at 11 g *** soil pHH2 Oincreased from about 4.54 in the control to 7.38 in the PR+CR+BC *** oxidizable organic carbon,cation exchange capacity,and available P were higher in the treatments containing BC than in the *** treatments containing CR and/or BC led to the highest activities of alkaline phosphomonoesterase,phosphodiesterase,andα-glucosidase,which increased P availability and gave the greatest biomass and *** suggest that biochar provides additional soluble P and supplies adsorption sites for phosphate,preventing its evolution to unavailable ***,PR applied together with BC contributed to an 840%yield increase compared to the *** treatments containing WSP and BC facilitated phosphite oxidation to phosphate and increased crop yield.

Ticagrelor therapy and atrioventricular block:Do we need to worry?

Ticagrelor is a potent,direct P2Y12 antagonist with rapid onset of action and intense platelet inhibition,indicated in patients with acute coronary syndromes(ACS).This drug is usually well tolerated,but some patients experience serious adverse effects:Major bleeding;gastrointestinal disturbances;dyspnoea;ventricular pauses > 3 *** the unexpected high incidence of bradyarrhythmias,a PLATO substudy monitored this side effect,showing that ticagrelor was associated with an increase in the rate of sinus bradycardia and sinus arrest compared to *** side effect was usually transient,asymptomatic and not associated with higher incidence of severe atrioventricular(AV) block or pacemaker needs.A panel of experts from Food and Drug Administration did not consider bradyarrhythmias a serious problem in clinical practice and,accordingly,current labeling of the drug does not give any precaution or contraindication regarding this ***,recently some articles have described ACS patients with high-degree,life-threatening,AV block requiring drug discontinuation and,in some cases,pacemaker *** this paper,we describe and discuss five published case reports of severe AV block following ticagrelor therapy and two other cases managed in our *** analysis of literature suggests that,although rarely,ticagrelor can be associated with lifethreatening AV *** and careful monitoring are required especially in patients with already compromised conduction system and/or treated with AV blocking *** studies,with long-term rhythm monitoring,would help to define the outcome of patients at higher risk of developing this complication.

How to select elderly colorectal cancer patients for surgery: a pilot study in an Italian academic medical center

Objective: Cancer is one of the most common diagnoses in elderly patients. Of all types of abdominal cancer, colorectal cancer(CRC) is undoubtedly the most frequent. Median age at diagnosis is approximately 70 years old worldwide. Due to the multiple comorbidities affecting elderly people, frailty evaluation is very important in order to avoid over- or undertreatment. This pilot study was designed to investigate the variables capable of predicting the long-term risk of mortality and living situation after surgery for ***: Patients with 70 years old and older undergoing elective surgery for CRC were prospectively enrolled in the study. The patients were preoperatively screened using 11 internationally-validated-frailty-assessment tests. The endpoints of the study were long-term mortality and living situation. The data were analyzed using univariate Cox proportional-hazard regression analysis to verify the predictive value of score indices in order to identify possible risk ***: Forty-six patients were studied. The median follow-up time after surgery was 4.6 years(range, 2.9-5.7 years) and no patients were lost to follow-up. The overall mortality rate was 39%. Four of the patients who survived(4/28, 14%) lost their functional autonomy. The preoperative impaired Timed Up and Go(TUG), Eastern Cooperative Group Performance Status(ECOG PS), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living(IADLs), Vulnerable Elders Survey(VES-13) scoring systems were significantly associated with increased long term mortality ***: Simplified frailty-assessing tools should be routinely used in elderly cancer patients before treatment in order to stratify patient risk. The TUG, ECOG-PS, IADLs and VES-13 scoring systems are potentially able to predict long-term mortality and disability. Additional studies will be needed to confirm the preliminary data in order to improve management strategies for oncogeriatric surgical patients.

Vitamin E for the treatment of children with hepatitis B e antigen-positive chronic hepatitis:a systematic review and meta-analysis

Coupling of bioelectrochemical toluene oxidation and trichloroethene reductive dechlorination for single-stage treatment of groundwater containing multiple contaminants

Bioremediation of groundwater contaminated by a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents is typically challenged because these contaminants are degraded via distinctive oxidative and reductive pathways,thus requiring different amendments and redox ***,we provided the proof-of-concept of a single-stage treatment of synthetic groundwater containing toluene and trichloroethene(TCE)in a tubular bioelectrochemical reactor,known as a“bioelectric well”.Toluene was degraded by a microbial bioanode(up to 150 mmol L^(-1) d^(-1))with a polarized graphite anode(t0.2 V ***)serving as the terminal electron *** electric current deriving from microbially-driven toluene oxidation resulted in(abiotic)hydrogen production(at a stainless-steel cathode),which sustained the reductive dechlorination of TCE to less-chlorinated intermediates(i.e.,cis-DCE,VC,and ETH),at a maximum rate of 500 meq L^(-1) d^(-1),in the bulk of the reactor.A phylogenetic and functional genebased analysis of the“bioelectric well”confirmed the establishment of a microbiome harboring the metabolic potential for anaerobic toluene oxidation and TCE reductive ***,Toluene degradation and current generation were found to be rate-limited by external mass transport phenomena,thus indicating the existing potential for further process optimization.
