Despite the availability of whole genome sequences of apple and peach,there has been a considerable gap between genomics and *** bridge the gap,the European Union funded the FruitBreedomics project(March 2011 to August 2015)involving 28 research institutes and private *** complementary approaches were pursued:(i)tool and software development,(ii)deciphering genetic control of main horticultural traits taking into account allelic diversity and(iii)developing plant materials,tools and methodologies for *** breakthroughs were made including the making available of ready-to-go DNA diagnostic tests for Marker Assisted Breeding,development of new,dense SNP arrays in apple and peach,new phenotypic methods for some complex traits,software for gene/QTl discovery on breeding germplasm via Pedigree Based Analysis(PBA).This resulted in the discovery of highly predictive molecular markers for traits of horticultural interest via PBA and via Genome Wide Association Studies(GWAS)on several European genebank *** also developed pre-breeding plant materials in which multiple sources of resistance were pyramided and software that can support breeders in their selection *** FruitBreedomics,significant progresses were made in the field of apple and peach breeding,genetics,genomics and bioinformatics of which advantage will be made by breeders,germplasm curators and scientists.A major part of the data collected during the project has been stored in the FruitBreedomics database and has been made available to the *** review covers the scientific discoveries made in this major endeavour,and perspective in the apple and peach breeding and genomics in Europe and beyond.

The effects of soil physical properties on yield components, grape quality and grapevine yield cv. Cabernet Sauvignon in Ultic Palexeralf soils located in Central Southern Chile were assessed. The experimental design was completely randomized with three treatments of soil texture: clayey, sandy clay and clayey loam. The higher yield was obtained in the sandy clay and clayey loam soils. The increase of bulk density, penetration resistance and clay content decreased the number of clusters per vine, number of berries per cluster and grapevine yield. Soil texture had not effects on the yield of shoots, berry diameter and total acidity. However, soluble solids were higher in the clayey soil. Shoot orientation only had positive effects on the cluster weight, number of berries per cluster, and grapevine yield, being higher in the upward shoots. This research remarked the importance of soil physical properties on the selection of sites with viticultural aptitude.

The aim of this study was to characterize tinctures and microcapsules loaded with an ethanol extract of red propolis through chemical, physicochemical and microbiological assays in order to establish quality control tools for nutraceutical preparations of red propolis. The markers(isoflavonoids, chalcones, pterocarpans,flavones, phenolic acids, terpenes and guttiferones) present in the tinctures A and B were identified and confirmed using lC/ESI/FTMS/Orbitrap. Four compositions(A, B, C and D) were prepared to contain B tincture of the red propolis with some pharmaceutical excipients and submitted to two drying processes, i. ***-drying and freeze-drying to obtain microcapsules loaded with the red propolis extract. The tinctures and microcapsules of the red propolis were submitted to the total flavonoid content and antioxidant activity *** antibacterial activity and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) were tested using Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25293 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 strains. The tinctures and microcapsules presented high flavonoid quantities from 20.50 to 40.79 mg/100 mg of the microcapsules. The antioxidant activity and IC50 were determined for the tinctures A and B(IC50: 6.95 μg/m l and 7.48 μg/m l), the spray-dried microcapsules(IC50: 8.89–15.63 μg/m l) and the freeze-dried microcapsules(IC50: 11.83–23.36 μg/m l). The tinctures and microcapsules were proved to be bioactive against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria with inhibition halos superior to 10 mm at concentration of 200 μg/m l and MIC values of 135.87–271.74 μg/m l using gram-positive strain and 271.74–543.48 μg/m l using gram-negative strain. The tinctures and microcapsules of the red propolis have a potential application for nutraceutical products.

The mammalian carboxylesterase 1(Ces1/CES1)family comprises several enzymes that hydrolyze many xenobiotic chemicals and endogenous *** investigate the pharmacological and physiological roles of Ces1/CES1,we generated Ces1 cluster knockout(Ces1^(-/-))mice,and a hepatic human CES1 transgenic model in the Ces1^(-/-)background(TgCES1).Ces1^(-/-)mice displayed profoundly decreased conversion of the anticancer prodrug irinotecan to SN-38 in plasma and ***1 mice exhibited enhanced metabolism of irinotecan to SN-38 in liver and ***1 and hCES1 activity increased irinotecan toxicity,likely by enhancing the formation of pharmacodynamically active ***1^(-/-)mice also showed markedly increased capecitabine plasma exposure,which was moderately decreased in TgCES1 ***1^(-/-)mice were overweight with increased adipose tissue,white adipose tissue inflammation(in males),a higher lipid load in brown adipose tissue,and impaired blood glucose tolerance(in males).These phenotypes were mostly reversed in TgCES1 ***1 mice displayed increased triglyceride secretion from liver to plasma,together with higher triglyceride levels in the male *** results indicate that the carboxylesterase 1 family plays essential roles in drug and lipid metabolism and ***1^(-/-)and TgCES1 mice will provide excellent tools for further study of the in vivo functions of Ces1/CES1 enzymes.

Correction of Acidity of a Brazilian Cerrado Oxisol with limestone and Wood Ash on the Initial Growth of Cowpea

Among Brazilian soils orders, there are some of it classified as acid soils, which need correction to guarantee crop productivity. Currently, limestone is the most used soil corrective and wood ash has been a sustainable alternative to this process. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effect of two correctives of soil acidity on an Oxisol collected in the Brazilian Cerrado area using limestone and wood ash and the effect of soil correction on initial growth of cowpea. Two greenhouse experiments were carried out: 1) with limestone, using base saturation levels (V%) of 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80;and 2) wood ash, with doses of 0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 g⋅dm−3, both in five randomized blocks. At 40 days after sowing, it was verified that pH values were within the range considered ideal for soil (pH of 5 to 7), according to the increase of base saturation levels and wood ash doses, but limestone provided faster results. Initial growth of cowpea was positively influenced by soil correction with use of both correctives. Wood ash and limestone increased soil pH to adequate values and resulted in better initial crop development.

AIM: To evaluate mucosal healing in patients with small bowel plus colonic Crohn's disease(CD) with a single non-invasive examination, by using PillCam COlON 2.(PCC2).METHODS: Patients with non-stricturing nonpenetrating small bowel plus colonic CD in sustained corticosteroid-free remission were included. At diagnosis,patients had undergone ileocolonoscopy to identify active CD lesions, such as ulcers and erosions, and small bowel capsule endoscopy to assess the lewis Score(lS). After ≥ 1 year of follow-up, patients underwent entire gastrointestinal tract evaluation with PCC2. The primary endpoint was assessment of CD mucosal healing, defined as no active colonic CD lesions and lS lve patients were included(7 male;mean age: 32 years), and mean follow-up was 38 *** majority of patients(83.3%) received immunosuppressive therapy. Three patients(25%) achieved mucosal healing in both the small bowel and the colon,while disease activity was limited to either the small bowel or the colon in 5 patients(42%). It was possible to observe the entire gastrointestinal tract in 10 of the12 patients(83%) who underwent ***: Only three patients in sustainedcorticosteroid-free clinical remission achieved mucosal healing in both the small bowel and the colon, highlighting the limitations of clinical assessment when stratifying disease activity, and the need for pan-enteric endoscopy to guide therapeutic modification.

Sex Difference in lactate Production by Adipocytes from lean Humans

lactate is an anaerobic metabolite produced in the absence of an adequate O2 supply. Although for a long time considered to be a waste product of glycolysis resulting from hypoxia, lactate is, in fact, an important source of glucose and also a gluconeogenic precursor, having a role in metabolic and endocrine signaling. lactate is produced by adipocytes and muscle cells. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the sex differences in lactate production by adipocytes isolated from lean human visceral adipose tissue. Main Methods: The experiments described were done using adipocytes isolated from adipose tissue of lean men and women. Adipocytes were isolated following Rodbell procedure, with modifications, for posterior analysis of glycerol and lactate production. Results: Morphometric analysis revealed no significant differences in the size of adipocytes from men and women (diameter: men: 172 ± 24 μm vs. women: 160 ± 16 μm, n = 4 and 10, respectively). Basal glycerol production was significantly higher in adipocytes from men compared to women (0.34 ± 0.06 vs. 0.16 ± 0.01 μmol/106 cells/60 min;mean ± SEM, n = 7 and 4, respectively;p l lactate production (men: 0.1 ± 0.01 μmol/10 cells/60 min vs. women: 0.12 ± 0.02 μmol/10 cells/60 min). However, when stimulated by norepinephrine, adipocytes from women produced more lactate than adipocytes from men. Female adipocytes also produced as much lactate as glycerol, whereas male adipocytes produced three times more glycerol than lactate. The intracellular mechanisms responsible for this sex difference in lactate production during norepinephrine-stimulated lipolysis remain to be identified.

Synthesis and Characterization of laNixCo1-xO3 Perovskites via Complex Precursor Methods

This work presents a study on the synthesis of laNixCo1-xO3 perovskites via complex precursor methods. Perovskite oxides with the composition laNixCo1-xO3 were synthesized by chelating precursor and polymeric precursor methods using nickel and/or cobalt nitrates, lanthanum nitrate, ethylene glycol, citric acid, and EDTA as starting source. The obtained perovskite were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and the morphology of the samples were investigated by N2 adsorption experiments and average medium particle size. TG curves and FTIR spectra were particularly useful in establishing of the optimal calcination temperature of the precursor powders. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of the perovskite structure in all samples prepared by both synthesis method and after calcinations at 700℃. The results showed that the preparation method resulted in oxides with the intended structure. The specific surface area values were influenced by preparation method.

AIM:To evaluate small bowel cleansing quality,diagnostic yield and transit time,comparing three cleansing protocols prior to capsule ***:Sixty patients were prospectively enrolled and randomized to one of the following cleansing protocols:patients in Group A underwent a 24 h liquid diet and overnight fasting;patients in Group B followed protocol A and subsequently were administered 2 l of polyethylene glycol(PEG) the evening before the procedure;patients in Group C followed protocol B and were additionally administered 100 mg of simethicone 30 min prior to capsule *** bowel cleansing was independently assessed by two experienced endoscopists and classified as poor,fair,good or excellent according to the proportion of small bowel mucosa under perfect conditions for *** there was no agreement between the two endoscopists,the images were reviewed and discussed until a consensus was *** preparation was considered acceptable if > 50% or adequate if > 75% of the mucosa was in perfect cleansing *** amount of bubbles was assessed independently and it was considered significant if it prevented a correct interpretation of the *** endoscopic findings,gastric emptying time(GET) and small bowel transit time(SBTT) were recorded for each ***:There was a trend favoring Group B in achieving an acceptable(including fair,good or excellent) level of cleansing(Group A:65%;Group B:83.3%;Group C:68.4%) [P = not significant(NS)] and favoring Group C in attaining an excellent level of cleansing(Group A:10%;Group B:16.7%;Group C:21.1%)(P = NS).The number of patients with an adequate cleansing of the small bowel,corresponding to an excellent or good classification,was 5(25%) in Group A,5(27.8%) in Group B and 4(21.1%) in Group C(P = 0.892).Conversely,7 patients(35%) in Group A,3 patients(16.7%) in Group B and 6 patients(31.6%) in Group C were considered to have poor small bowel cleansing(P = 0.417),with sig
