Comparison of white‑to‑white measurements using four devices and their determination of ICL sizing

Background:To compare the measurements obtained from the Orbscan II,IOLMaster 700,Pentacam AXL,and Castroviejo caliper and their effects on calculating the recommended implantable collamer lens(ICL)size and postoperative vault ***:This is a retrospective cross-sectional study of patients who underwent ICL surgery by a single surgeon from March 1,2018 to July 31,*** were reviewed for the anterior chamber depth(ACD)and white-to-white(WTW)measurements obtained from the Orbscan II,IOLMaster 700,Pentacam AXL,and Castroviejo caliper(WTW only).These were used to calculate the recommended ICL *** actual ICL size implanted,and vault measurements obtained one month postoperatively were also ***:One hundred seven eyes with a mean age of 27.9±7.7 years were included in the *** WTW measurements were significantly different between devices(Png the highest value(12.14±0.04 mm)and the caliper having the lowest value(11.45±0.04 mm).Mean ACD measurements were the lowest in Orbscan II(3.12±0.25 mm)and the highest in Pentacam AXL(3.16±0.24 mm).The Pentacam AXL produced an ICL size similar to the Orbscan in 69.2%of *** IOLMaster yielded an ICL measurement one size larger than Orbscan-based calculations in 64.5%of *** the Orbscan WTW and ACD,the desired vault of 0.25 to 0.75 mm and 0.25 to 1.00 mm was achieved in 70%and 91%of eyes,*** caliper WTW to IOLMaster 700 or Pentacam AXL WTW increases the percentage of achieving the desired vault to 80%,similar to the ***:The Orbscan II,IOLMaster 700,and Pentacam AXL cannot be used interchangeably for calculating ICL *** the WTW from caliper measurement with the ACD of the IOLMaster 700 or Pentacam AXL could improve ICL sizing and achieve a higher percentage of eyes with the desired vault.

Hydropeaking,which refers to rising or falling discharges caused by the turning on or off of hydro-turbines to generate electricity,is a topic of growing interest due to its impact on fluvial *** date,most hydropeaking studies have focused on the impact of peak fluctuations on invertebrate and fish communities,but little attention has been paid to its impact on riverine plants and how functional traits may make them resistant to *** performed a review to assess how a set of 32 plant functional traits can be expressed in riverine plant species,and found evidence of how such expression affects their capacity to cope with common sources of hydropeaking disturbance(i.e.,inundation,fast water drawdown,and rapid water fluctuations linked to up-ramping and down-ramping hydropeaking operations).The information here presented can simplify the evaluation of impacts on riverine plant communities worldwide,as well as to detect suitable species to successfully restore rivers affected by hydropower production.

Phosphorus(P)is an essential nutrient for plant growth and *** preferentially absorb P as orthophosphate(Pi),an ion that displays low solubility and that is readily fixed in the soil,making P limita-tion a condition common to many soils and Pi fertilization an inefficient *** cope with Pi limitation,plants have evolved a series of developmental and physiological responses,collectively known as the Pi starvation rescue system(PSR),aimed to improve Pi acquisition and use efficiency(PUE)and protect from Pi-starvation-induced *** research has been carried out during the last 20 years to un-ravel the mechanisms underlying the control of the PSR in *** we review the results of this research effort that have led to the identification and characterization of several core Pi starvation signaling components,including sensors,transcription factors,microRnAs(miRnAs)and miRnA inhibitors,kinases,phosphatases,and components of the proteostasis *** also refer to recent results revealing the existence of intricate signaling interplays between Pi and other nutrients and antagonists,n,Fe,Zn,and As,that have changed the initial single-nutrient-centric view to a more integrated view of nutrient ***,we discuss advances toward improving PUE and future research priorities.

Pine-fruit shell (PFS) is a lignocellulosic residue derived from the fruit of Araucaria angustifolia, a coniferoustree native of South America, part of a whole vegetation of the Atlantic Forest, found in the South and Southwestof Brazil. In this work PFS will be characterized and used in the production of PFS-based polyols throughoxypropylation. Three series were chosen (PFS/propylene oxide (PO) (w/v, g/mL) of 30/70, 20/80 and 10/90)with four catalyst levels (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%, (w/w, PFS based)). Oxypropylation occurred at moderateconditions of temperature, pressure and time giving rise to liquid polyols with a homopolymer content (PPO)ranging from 4-65%, a hydroxyl number (IOH) between 257-605 mg KOH/g and viscosities (V) varying from0.76 Pa.s to 373.90 Pa.s (20°C) for the series 20/80 and 10/90, while for the series 30/70, the viscosity reachedvalues higher than 500 Pa.s, 20°C. The unreacted PFS (UR) varied between 3.6% and 77.4% (PFS-basis). Afterthe PFS-based polyols production and characterization, a principal component analysis (PCA) was performed inorder to evaluate the established interactions between the used formulation variables and the obtained polyolproperties. The PCA analysis allowed to clarify the interactions between PFS and PO contents and the finalbiopolyol properties (PPO, IOH, V and UR). This approach showed to be a simple method to rationally analyzethe influence of the input formulation variables on the final polyol properties.

The ability of sperm selection techniques to remove single- or double-strand DnA damage

A wide variety of techniques for the preparation of sperm are currently available, of which the most commonly employed are densitygradient centrifugation （DGC） and swim-up （SUP）. To date, these methods appear to be effective in selecting functional sperm for assisted reproduction techniques （ART）, but they may have negative effects on sperm DnA. In this study, the ability of these semen processing techniques to eliminate spermatozoa containing single- and double-strand DnA damage was assessed by the two-tailed comet assay and the sperm chromatin dispersion test in 157 semen samples from patients seeking assisted reproduction treatment. Our results indicated that SUP and DGC are equally efficient in eliminating spermatozoa containing double-strand DnA damage and sperm with highly damaged （degraded） DnA, as characterized by the presence of both single- and double-strand DnA breaks. However, DGC is more efficient than SUP in selecting spermatozoa that are free from single-strand DnA damage. Future studies should characterise the importance of the various types of DnA damage and examine the sperm processing protocols used in each laboratory to determine their ability to eliminate DnA damage and hence, prevent the potential transmission of genetic mutations via ART.

In this editorial,we comment on pancreatic cancer(PC),one of the most aggressive and lethal *** minimal improvements in survival rates have been achieved over recent *** chemotherapeutic regimens have little impact,and surgical resection remains the only reliable curative *** address current treatment options for these patients,focusing on the usefulness of breast cancer(BRCA)gene mutation as a prognostic biomarker and predictor of response to *** survival outcomes have been reported in patients with PC and mutant BRCA gene treated with first-line platinum-based ***,it appears appropriate to include BRCA gene status among clinical criteria used to select the chemotherapy *** addition,maintenance treatment with poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase inhibitors has been found to improve progression-free survival in patients with PC and mutated BRCA whose disease does not progress after first-line platinum-based *** combination has therefore been proposed as the optimal treatment regimen for these patients.

To meet the surging needs in energy efficiency and eco-friendly lubricants,a novel superlubricious technology using a vegetable oil and ceramic materials is *** coupling different hydrogen-free amorphous carbon coatings with varying fraction of sp^(2) and sp^(3) hybridized carbon in presence of a commercially available silicon nitride bulk ceramic,castor oil provides superlubricity although the liquid vegetable oil film in the contact is only a few nanometres thick at *** a partial liquid film possibly separating surfaces in contact,local tribochemical reactions between asperities are essential to maintain superlubricity at low *** local pressure activates chemical degradation of castor oil generating graphitic/graphenic-like species on top of asperities,thus helping both the chemical polishing of surface and its chemical passivation by H and OH ***,the formation of the formation of–(CH_(2)–CH_(2))n–noligomers have been evidenced to have a major role in the friction *** simulation unveils that formation of chemical degradation products of castor oil on friction surfaces are favoured by the quantity of sp^(2)-hybridized carbon atoms in the amorphous carbon ***,tuning sp^(2)-carbon content in hydrogen-free amorphous carbon,in particular,on the top layers of the coating,provides an alternative way to control superlubricity achieved with castor oil and other selected green lubricants.
