Crambe is a promising crop for biodiesel production. However, there is no much information available about techniques and research regarding the best performance in different regions to explore its potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc in the development of crambe. The study was carried out in a greenhouse and it consisted of four independent experiments in completely randomized design, with three replications. Four metals with five levels were applied: 0, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mg·kg-1 for copper, cadmium, chromium;and 0, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mg·kg-1 for zinc, in order to evaluate the growth of crambe. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and comparison of means by Tukey test at 1 and 5% significance. Despite doses of cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc in growing crambe have influenced in some of the evaluated variables of the plants, in general, their development was similar in relation to doses and the metals applied. The importance of cultivating crambe is related to grain production, based on this, copper and cadmium decreased this production.

Anacardium occidentale l., Anacardiaceae, is frequently used to treat infections. We evaluated the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of extracts obtained from aerial parts of the plant in comparison with the extract prepared with the flowers. Ethanol extracts of the leaves (EEl), stem bark (EEB), and flowers (EEF) were prepared separately. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by agar diffusion and broth dilution methods. The minimum bactericidal and fungicidal concentrations were determined against: Streptococcus mutans, lactobacillus acidophilus, Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Salmonella choleraesuis, Candida albicans, and Candida tropicalis. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated based on their scavenger capacity of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyle. The phytochemical profile was analyzed by colorimetric methods and by HPlC with UV detection. All extracts exhibited antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Although, the EEF was the most effective since it inhibited the growth of all 14 microorganisms tested. Anacardic and galic acids were identified in all extracts as well phenolic compounds, triterpenes, flavones and xanthones. In conclusion, the extracts obtained from the aerial parts of A. occidentale, mainly the extract of flowers that was the most effective, are rich in bioactive metabolites that exert a potent antioxidant and antimicrobial effect. Taken together, the results indicate an important biotechnological potential of A. occidentale as a source of compounds with broad-spectrum antimicrobial and of antioxidant activity to be used in the food and cosmetics industry.

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the extract of libidibia ferrea l. (228.022-INPA) and a mouthwash formulation against microorganisms of the dental biofilm. The extract of libidibia ferrea l. was prepared and formulated with an alcohol-free mouthwash. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration—MIC was determined by microdilution and cell viability was evaluated through fluorescence. The MICs for the extract were 4.375 μg/ml (Streptococcus mutans), 3.750 μg/ml (Streptococcus oralis), 4.375 μg/ml (lactobacillus casei). In contrast, for the mouthwash, the MICs were 6.000 μg/ml (bacteriostatic against Streptococcus mutans and bactericidal against Streptococcus oralis). In 1.250 μg/ml of the extract, the number of viable cells measured by fluorescence tests was 16.47% and 14.12% for Streptococcus mutans and lactobacillus casei, respectively. For the mouthwash (1.000 μg/ml), 20.60% of viable cells for Streptococcus mutans, and 9.60% for lactobacillus casei were observed. It can be concluded that the extract and its mouthwash containig libidibia ferrea l. showed antibacterial activity against microorganisms from the dental biofilm.

We investigated the effects of formulations based on phosphite products on gas exchange and activity of antioxidant enzymes in coffee plants. Seedlings of the Mundo Novo cultivar were submitted to various treatments composed of different formulations of with potassium phosphite (ADB 120), manganese phosphite (Reforce Mn), and fungicide (PrioriXtra®). For coffee seedlings, the combination of potassium phosphite and citrus by-products, isolated or in a combination with other products elicited the antioxidant system. Besides the high activity of antioxidant enzymes, the photosynthetic rates were higher than other treatments. The better performance of coffee seedlings treated with those formulations occurred even in absence of pathogens.

The diagnosis of liver cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C has not always been easy, since the gold standard method is the liver biopsy, which is an invasive procedure with interobserver accuracy problems and there have been reports of complications including records of deaths due to hemoperitoneum. Cirrhosis changes the prognosis of the subject with hepatitis C and requires a different clinical management. This study aimed to identify clinical and laboratory variables associated with the diagnosis of cirrhosis in the ultrasonography of patients infected with hepatitis C. In a case-control study, we evaluated 70 cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis C compared to a control group of 70 non-cirrhotic people with positive HCV. The results showed, through logistic regression analysis, that the variables blood donor and professional athlete, adjusted for alcohol consumption, showed OR 0.24 and 0.18, with p values of 0.044 and 0.035, respectively. We conclude that the diagnosis of cirrhosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C remains challenging, but the patients with the condition of blood donor or professional athlete prove to be less likely to cirrhosis in ultrasonography in the initial consultation.

目的：尽管有报道自酸蚀釉质粘合剂存在粘结不足的缺陷．自酸蚀粘结剂的应用在不断扩大．有些临床医师选择单独酸蚀釉质以弥补其缺陷。本研究目的是评估3种自酸蚀粘结剂在热疲劳后，酸蚀对釉质封闭的影响。材料与方法：取30颗牛切牙，在每颗牙上预备两个箱状洞型，分别用Adper Prompt l-Pop（3MESPE）、Clearfil SE Bond（Kuraray America）和iBond（Heraeus Kulzer）这三种自酸蚀粘结剂中的一种处理窝洞。其中部分先用磷酸酸蚀釉质，另一部分直接涂布自酸蚀粘结剂，然后用FiltekZ250（3MESPE）充填洞型。然后取一半的充填体置于1500个热循环中使之疲劳，再用50％硝酸氨银来检验材料的边缘封闭能力。银离子渗透按O～4分级．材料界面通过黑点探测器在发散区域扫描电镜（FESem）下分析。用非参数统计计算出一个95％的可信区间。结果：Clearfil SE Bond的釉质微渗漏显著低于另两个自酸蚀粘结剂。对置于热循环后的标本，酸蚀能显著降低所有自酸蚀粘结剂的银离子渗透。对没有经过热循环的标本，酸蚀只能减少iBond的银离子渗透。在FESem下．银离子沉淀可被发现位于Adper Prompt l-Pop和iBond的粘结层中．而Clearfil SE Bond处理后的10个标本中只有2个表现出银离子沿釉质粘结界面渗透。结论：标本在热循环疲劳状态．磷酸酸蚀能提高3种自酸蚀粘结剂的釉质边缘封闭能力。

Background: A healthy normal skin is essential for a person’s physical and mental well being. It is an important aspect of their sexual attractiveness, a sense of well being and a sense of self confidence. Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder of skin affecting 1% - 4% of the world population. Neither life threatening nor symptomatic (except that depigmented patches burn easily when exposed to the sun) the effects of vitiligo can be cosmetically and psychologically devastating. Because the disease is still not understood, there is a plethora of different treatments approaches, but they are largely unsatisfactory from patient’s perspective. Objective: To report the outcomes from oral use of an infusion of leaves of Solanum paniculatum l., Jacaranda brasiliensis and Sonchus oleraceus for treatment of vitiligo. Ethical issues: Study approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Hospital Federal dos Servidores do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (CAAE: 32143314.9.0000.5252). All participants confirmed the condition of volunteer by signing the Informed Consent Form. Methods: From October 2014 to October 2015 twelve subjects consumed daily four glasses (800 ml) of proposed phytotherapeutic preparation. Results: All subjects were highly satisfied about their outcomes. Total depigmentation was considered as a positive outcome because it is cosmetically acceptable. Total depigmentation was observed in presence of 80% or more of depigmenteted patches. Conclusions: The phytotherapeutic preparation proposed is effective on treatment of depigmenteted patches in vitiligo.

Electrolytic Cobalt Removal in Wastewater

Industrial effluents containing cobalt ions have become a serious problem for the environment, unless properly treated, due to their toxic potential. Currently there has been an intensification of the use of cobalt in several industrial sectors as super alloys, catalysts, batteries and pigments in ceramic materials, and a consequent intensification also of environmental contamination. This paper aims to show a simple and effective treatment for the removal of cobalt ions from simulated industrial wastewater, based on cathodic eletrolytic removal using a carbon steel screen. As a result, a 73% removal of cobalt ions from solutions was achieved with a concentration of 400 mg Co2+/l, a current of 0.30 A and a voltage of 30 V. In the same conditions, 84% and 88% was removed from 200 mg Co2+/l and 100 mg Co2+/l, respectively. Thus, this method presents itself as a cheap and efficient alternative for the treatment of industrial effluents containing cobalt ions.
